One of the things I've always loved about living in york and surrounding villages is no one bats an eyelid at seeing Vikings and Saxons wandering about armed and in costume.

At the Brew York tap they have an evening of Viking Karaoke during the festival, I would love to see that too.

You should visit the largest viking festival in Scandinavia! It is this summer in Horten, Norway.

You might find Up Helly Aa in the Shetlands interesting and if you can find time for a film try Faintheart (made in 2008 if you're not sure which one).

About 12-13 years ago we lived closer to the city centre than we do now - One Saturday my now wife was doing the dished and looked up to seeing a "viking" peeing in the bushes below our flat! Not an everyday occurrence for sure!

The Welsh name for York is Efrog, which has it's origins in the Celtic word for the yew tree, which both Norse people and ancient Druids considered a holy tree where the Gods resided. So York was a very important centre prior to the Saxon invasions, both for the Vikings, and the ancient Britons, who were mostly Celts. Interestingly, older Christian graveyards also had yew trees.

York is definitely in North Yorkshire. However, the Danelaw covered further North and South. My family on both sides came from Liverpool, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. My DNA is over a third Scandinavian, over a third Celtic and Gaelic, under a third English, and almost three percent Italian (Roman).

York is not in the middle of England! We have an area called "The Midlands". Birmingham & Coventry are in the Midlands (i.e. middle of England).

If everyone chose their own role it would all be Axe Wielding Berserkers and the injuries would be horrendous. There is a much better festival in Shetland called Up Helly Aa, less cheesy more Fire and Ship Burning.

Weird innit. Been a Yorkshiremen all my long life, yet never heard of this "festival" - So I did a bit of research. Turns out it is quite new, only started roundabout 1986/7. Just when they opened the tourists "Viking centre" in York, then up sprang this Tourists Viking Festival. - So it is only around 38 years old. Which might be old to tourists from the USA, but is nothing in the History of the UK

York is definitely in the north of England, as a Yorkshire woman no one would say we were middle England. The midlands would be where I live now in the East Midlands Nottingham, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire or the West Midlands Coventry, Birmingham, Worcestershire down to about as far south as Northamptonshire and Norfolk. We would call everything below that line the South.

The Vikings were the first Europeans to find North America, Viking artifacts have been found along the Canadian East Coast, they didn't settle just raided, pillaged, even traded with the Natives, maybe raped the Native women and left. Would have sailed and rowed via Iceland and Greenland.

York isn't middle England, your including Scotland to even be close. Thousands turned over in their grave when you said that. Middle England is Derbyshire, Nottingham etc.

The accents are so soft now. The dialects are still there, but you need to talk to the poor, esspecially if they've had a drink, to get a real accent, cos most middle class and some of us peasants have had to talk to southerners of listened too much to the internet. Come to County Durham, in the peasant places and you likely won't understand them at all. Same with lots of places. The west country... they are difficult, even the ones that have lost a lot of the accent. A good example of dialect here would be Howamannana howa, werwer gannagan owa yaga's ut, or awa gan'n hyem Nay the mora It's not too difficult but listen to us peasants say it... baffling to most. Give translating it a go and I'll come back to see what you come up with

Please guys, if you can, watch “This Country”. It’s a brilliant sitcom/mockumentary that is scarily close to real life in a small village in England. So close in-fact, people thought the first series was an actual documentary. Daisy May Cooper co-wrote and starred in it. (The Lady who bought a bottle of wine on Taskmaster)... infact a large amount of her actual family star in the show along side her.
