Boiled sweets, like the pear drops and rhubarb and custard are classic long journey sweets, often individually wrapped and supplied by grandmothers.

Rainbow drops aren't great we know this but as they are just puffed rice in bright colours with minimal additives they are some of the first sweets safe for toddlers to eat so hold a special place in the hearts of British kids because they're linked to that first experience of eating something just for fun.

There are still retro sweet shops around where you buy them all by weight and they put them in a little packet like back in the day,those are the true retro sweets,you could fill 20 episodes with stuff from there😂

Also guys, alot of those boiled sweets, the pear drops, never used to be sold in bags, there were big jars in local shop, and you used to buy by weight, quarter of an ounze, which was given in paper bag, the charming thing, the older generation used to call them bullets, our grandparents, many a time you would here then same do you want bullet, it mean a sweet (candy) usually in there pocket, but you never knew what flavour you were getting. I remember going for some bullets lol at the shop, around 1979, i was 15, i took the dog, well trained one, told the dog to sit and stay outside, no lead, did not need one, i came out the shop, mind on my bullets, sitting at home, dad asked, where is the dog, holy shit left her outside the shop, went back, she was still sitting there.....yes i did go in and get her a treat, for staying lol

P.s the hard boiled drops shouldn’t be bitten. They are meant to be constantly sucked. We do have some sweets which have just a shell exterior which can be bitten through but not drops they are solid.

hi guys, sean A lister mate here, these couple will blow your mind, one from the 70's another from the 70's but ended later, this was candy as you would say to look like tabacco or cigarettes. The first one, you have seen the old westerns, when they have there tobacco in little pouch, take a pinch and roll the cigarette, we had the same, it was candy strands, made to look like tobacco, in a little pouch, just the same, these sold massive at the time, because it was the craze of playing marbles, and the pouches were great to keep the marbles in to take to school the second, was candy sticks, white stick of candy, with red tip to look like a cigarette, they came in the same type of box, that 10 cigarettes would come in, kids walking round with candy, pretending they adults and smoking.

The sugar on the sweets is THERE to stop them getting stuck in the bag.

If they were genuine "Retro" candies, the "chewy" candies would have been as hard as rock. When I was a little kid in the 60s/70s, I used to have to break them up with a rock to fit them in my mouth. So I could eat them without dribbling.. Before "Best before Dates", were a thing sweets would hang around on the shop shelves until they fossilised. Drumsticks are a hard toffee lolly. At Christmas we used to buy a tray of hard toffee, that came with a little hammer to break it up.

I had a classic sweet yesterday one of our dipper sweets called a sherbet fountain it’s a black liquorice stick which you suck and then stick in sherbet which comes in a tube I had to use a butter knife to loosen the powder a few times but it was so good sherbet dip dabs are also amazing if you like dips you’ll love them.

I think you will never like each other's sweets/candy because each side has been brought up different in how we class them. In the US it is ok to have so many artificial flavourings and additives, in the UK it isn't and tries to be close to the original flavour of things. It's like comparing Hershey's with Cadbury's chocolate.

I had a double dip a few weeks ago. And I really did like it. Like the fruit taste was realistic. But I did end up with the powder going down the inside of my shirt. So it is not a very comfortable sweet to wear.

British sweets these days tend to have subtle flavours because we use a lot of natural fruit juice rather than artificial chemical replacements it does compromise the taste a little but once your tastes adapt honestly it's better. I grew up in the eighties when flavours were way stronger but less healthy I do disagree with making everything vegan because making everyone eat worse sweets to benefit a tiny but loud minority irritates me however cutting down on chemicals benefits everyone so I'm ok with it.

just a little comment, slightly off topic, but what you mentioned about being healthier, free health care in UK, and then not having to treat people if it can be prevented, its not perfect im not saying it is, but we have sugar tax on soft drink's, the less sugar the cheaper the drink, to stop overweight and type diabetes(spell check). my mother is in hospital as we speak, she is 82 her kidneys have failed, she was in good health, she is getting kidney dialosis twice a day, all her food and need', she is on state pensions, pays no rent for her, its paid for by government, no local taxes, paid for, also, all her medical is free, They are talking about putting a ban on the energy drinks, till the age of 16, because of the sugar and caffine, which may affect children later, thus, hospital or other stuff

the problem is you are thinking the candy you try is for adults, the dib dab is for kids not adults thats why they arent strong in flavor... same goes for crisps... hard candies... our fod standards are strict on strong flavors for kids, the reason for that is some people suffer from 'Burning Mouth Syndrome' so food standards made manufacturers use less acidic flavors and so on in food production... not to mention the chemicals in US food your taste buds are ruined before your 13 years old lol
