When I was growing up in the 80s, and Wham Bars first came out, it said on the wrapper that they would give you the superpower of concentration, or something like that. I ate so many of them, trying to convince my Mum it was for the sake of my education...

Wham bars along with a good few other sweets were from a now gone company called McCowans, they made highland toffee and many others and whams used to draw your cheeks together like biting a lemon. Im pretty sure McCowans made irn bru bars as well, but the bigger company Barratts swallowed them up.

I’m sure the pink part was always just a fruit (I think strawberry or raspberry) flavoured chew but it was the crystals that were sour…and they were proper sour. I remember when they first came out in the early 80’s, they were about double the width (though a similar length) and if I remember correctly they were about 5 pence each. McCowans Highland Toffee was great and they had multiple price point sizes. Back at the start of the 80’s you could get two of the smallest size for a half pence (they were about an inch long and a half inch wide), then there was the 2 pence size (that was about two inches long and about an inch wide), the 5 pence bar (was about four inches long and two inches wide) and the 10 pence bar that (was about six inches long and maybe two and a half inches wide). It’s really quite sad how many of our UK brands have disappeared over the last forty years or so, due to being swallowed up by bigger brands…or sometimes overshadowed (in the case of Golden Wonder, who were the brand that came up with Pot Noodles but were at one time one of the largest crisps brands but are quite difficult to find outside of Scotland now).

@@RighAlban I forgot about Highlander crisps, they were great too. It feels as though the overly capitalised system within manufacturing has really limited our access to brands. You go into most corner shops now and look at the crisps section and sometimes you’ll be lucky to find more than one or two brands (often owned by the same company but one has retained its original manufacturer’s branding), even if there’s a massive selection of flavours but back when I was a kid in the 80’s there was probably the best part of a dozen different brands, most (if not all) of which were independent of each other. But now, there’s a handful of companies that own brands who own other brands and often our shelves look a little bit sadder for it.

For Coconut, a Tunnocks Caramel Log, which is basically a Caramel Wafer dusted in toasted coconut on the chocolate exterior. Edit: Heh warm wine is when you drink mulled wine (which is spiced wine), you can also quaff Mead chilled or warmed for two different experiences, likewise with Sake.

I love Black Jacks (yes, I would probably be considered old!), and even better Fruit Salads. They used to be 4 for a penny when I was really young, and then it changed to 2 for a penny. Black Jacks are aniseed flavoured, and kids loved them as they made your tongue go black! We were simple folk back in those days! 😂

If you're into sours, there is a really old traditional sweet shop in York, that sells extremely sour hard sweets. After 2 you have a numb tongue. I've maxed out at 7. They're brutal.

to be fair the cakes that give heating instructions are fine eaten cold, try the ginger cake with a black tea as it knocks back the ginger and sweetness a couple of notches, you need to try sherbert dip dabs aswell if you like a sour candy

I've never heated ginger cake up. I usually get the one in green packaging. It's nice with custard. I love blackjacks 1 of my favourites. Can't stand red wine.

@@StayBoozieProbably not much I love the stickyness on the outside of the cake. It's really moist nice with cream on as well. I've done it with homemade custard (egg yolks, cornflour, milk, vanilla, and sugar). Much nicer than custard powder.

we do have SOME really sour sweets...but not many, i think Warheads and Toxic Wastes are the most sour i can think. purple skittles are blackcurrant, it's a berry that is native mostly to Europe and Asia (though we now grow them in the UK), we use them in sweets and for some drinks. As far as i know blackcurrants hardly exist in the USA at all because they aren't cultivated so there is a very small market for them...they certainly don't use them like we do in mass market for food and drink because they don't have enough. the most well known product used from blackcurrants is the drink called Ribena.

if you heat up a jamacian ginger cake you should microwave it for a minute rather than in the oven, just enough to warm it then serve it with warm custard over the top
