"Dutch" actually means "German" too. It's just that it's caught on as a way of referring to things from the Netherlands. But then "German" _does_ include Dutch people which "Dutch" doesn't, because it refers to a larger ethnic group of which people from the Netherlands are a part. ...which is to say, this hasn't been the first time there's some confusion between Germany and the Netherlands. Honestly Germany has better beer anyway so calling Heineken German is kind of a compliment, because it means it lives up to German standards.

??? "Dutch" is cognate with "Duits" and "Deutsch", both of which refer to things from Germany. "German" is cognate with "Germaans" and "Germanisch" which means things relating to the Germanic peoples. What's so hard to understand about that?

The "Centraal Beheer" commercials are absolutely in a league of their own. They are famous here in The Netherlands, and have been for decades. The main theme in all of them is "having bad luck". Their slogan "even apeldoorn bellen" ("better call Apeldoorn", loosely translated) is somewhat synonymous to "that sucks, dude". Legendary.
@arposkraft36164 жыл бұрын

I personally thought the Lion on the roof commercial was one of the least funny ones. As for a non-Even Apeldoorn Bellen commercial that would've been a very good one on the list or a future list: the Gouden Gids commercial about the shark-aquarium with the guy cleaning the floors hitting one of the windows and cracking it, with the maintenance guy calling some companies for a replacement and upon hearing they only have frosted glass instead of clear going like "They only have frosted glass!!" And the guy who cracked the window and is hoping to hold it together is like "Yea, yea, do that, do that!" and the maintenance guy is like "Nah, they will see that instantly..." and then the big shark turns up in the end swimming towards the window.

Funny thing is that those Apeldoorn commercials were almost axed, because they didn't actually work that well immediately. Only after they received a lot of complaints from people who loved them, did they realize that they weren't driving up sales immediately (which in the Dutch market for insurance would be hard anyway, since many types can only be switched once a year) but driving brand recognition. Second issue: 'Apeldoorn' is a city, not the company. So, the commercials came back, but with the name of the insurer added subtly, 'Call Apeldoorn' was meant to mean 'call our main office in Apeldoorn' but people were trying to find the insurer 'Apeldoorn'. I worked in Marketing research. I saw a ton of these that didn't make it to TV. :-P
@JoshSweetvale2 жыл бұрын
The Apeldoorn thing _does_ help people not feel like they're being 'marketed to' - VERY personable. Still, it's at the cost of brand recognition.

But most of them were not half as good as the ones from the past. @arposkraft36164 жыл бұрын
@@nonexistingvoid not really, often anglophones make it to difficult for themselfs by not realizing many languages , dutch being one, contain word-rhyme, meaning where English seperates each and every word with a space, we in het achterkamertje van de poldermaatschappij, don't do that. Meaning that instead of ALL these english speaking folk, USA people mostly, starting with, "nah im giving up" should first try to put dashes in places where they think (or have learned) spaces in english would be When you do that, het achter-kamertje van de polder-maatschappij, becomes less intimidating as you are now able to analyse and translate each word on its own. Another issue that seems to give trouble both ways is that word-order tends to be dissimmilar, but a good thing to know about this is that a native speaker will 99% of the time know what you intend to say even when the word order is not as it should be, If I tell you 'I will go to the shop"or I tell you "to the shop I will go" there's rules for when to preferably use each one of those, but everyone speaking english will have a broad idea what Im trying to proclaim there. Anglophones tend to be extremely insecure about how linguistics works, mostly due to English having become a trading language, in which you can't enforce the nuances even though regardless of how many Anglophones seem to excuse beforehand for ill pronunciation of names (protip; names and titles you are allowed to pronounce as would be natural to your own tongue, it's a non-issue) It does happen more then once that Anglophones from that insecurity will in the middle of a discussion try to derail the matters by starting to insist that the whole entire world speaks not only good english but flawless in a world where the UK and USA people can't even agree on the spelling of color vs colour, nor explain whether a shower is someone who shows a thing, or a faucet from which water is sprayed.

Basically, the Cup-A-Soup commercials are about how people either are too sleepy or too annoyed at around 4pm without their Cup-A-Soup. The first one with the airport security officer, he was clearly too sleepy to notice the two bags of cocaine (or whatever it was), and got handed a Cup-A-Soup. The second one, with Sjors, he is talking all about how he loves his coworkers and how he gives them friendship but then bursts out in anger when he's about to have his 4pm Cup-A-Soup but is interrupted. Hence why after he does finish it, he's back to his calm self and is like "come on, tell me I'm a jerk, it's fine"

"Die paula is een koe" "Koekje erbij" "Lays chips reclame" Leuker zou zijn als je ze zou vergelijken met soortgelijke amerikaanse en dan kijken. Amerikaanse reclame naar mijn gevoel is alsof de kijkers dom zijn en het heel simpel uitgelegd moet worden. Weinig inhoud of doordenkers grapjes

It's great watching these again, they never get old. I also love the Heineken one with Rudi. And Rolo with the elephant.

Very fun video! another one of these could be fun. some other classic dutch commercials are 3 commercials for the "McDonalds Mannenburger", and "Rollo, with the elephant"

Heerlijk om naar jullie te kijken. Misschien de reclame van Centraal beheer met die leeuw op het dak van die auto, die is ook helemaal geweldig en heeft weinig vertaling nodig hahaha
