Never in my +60 year life have I had a toilet that required more maintenance than my 9 year old American Standard 4266 (Champion 4). I have Chicago water and it ate through at least 5 seals (by the way, American Standards's OEM seals bubble and leak after while). Replaced the Fluidmaster, water fill valve, because it kept leaking into the overflow. The handle extension bent over time, wasn't very strong. Replaced it with a corky strong-arm. Also constant Chain issues. Breaking the flush valve seal (as the seal got older) , with the pull-chain took a lot of torque, eventually bending the flush-arm. If replacing the flush valve seal and o-ring doesn't this time with a QEM work, I'll take the tank off and replace the flush valve with a Nuflush flush valve. Ghost flushing is occurring. Never had all these issues with my 1992 American Standard conventional ballcock and flapper. Next time I'll buy a Toto.

Yes sir, I am having all of these same issues, I bought a house with one of these toilets and I have done more work to this damned toilet than anything else in this house (including replacing the bathroom vanity) and now I'm about to go to get more toilet parts for this toilet because right now you have to remove the tank cover and use your hand to pull all of the flush seal parts out one by one to flush as the plastic "screw" that holds it all together broke

At 0:25 in the video, it doesn't really show this, but unscrewing that black plastic "nut" takes a bit of strength to unseat it for the first turn. There are a couple plastic "bumps" that you have to "click past" when unscrewing it. And again, when you're screwing it in, it takes a bit of pressure to get it to "click into" that position when it's as tight as it needs to be.

You do realize this is the worst design flaw ever in a toilet, right?? Absolute garbage. 5 gaskets in 3 years. But hey, making money even after the toilet is sold, that’s genius! I will never use American Standard again. We built a 410 house complex in Wailuku and I was able to convince them to not use American Standard toilets because of this. Would have been a huge headache with callbacks on these...

My American Standard toilets had been phantom flushing for years! It was rare at first, then it got worse, then I could hear water actively leaking... The blue gasket is some faulty material, it had bubbles filled with water protruding all around the thing. This caused the gasket not to seat quite right. I think American Standard needs to own up on this and do a product recall, I can't imagine how many gallons of water are wasted by this faulty material.

@@savannahzmomma in 7 years of champ 4 ownership so far, I'm sure the toilet has drained more water through the poor flush valve assembly than it's flushed intentionally. It's already on the third ring after bubbles in the other. Water and sewer are 3 cents a gallon here. If you're not sitting near the toilet to hear it refilling periodically, you don't notice until it's running every several minutes. At this point, it's wasting two to 3 digits in gallons per day, and the retailers of the toilet don't sell original equipment parts, but rather higher markup compatible parts. For the design to be this poor is an indication of the manufacturers priorities.

OK Kudo's to the America Standard for either making something or buying a seal costing less than a dime that produces monumental aggravation for American Standard and homeowners many who pay dearly for every drop of water they wastes, as in this situation. Only in the movies, like the one above, does the screw come off so quickly and easily. Back home here in the house, I almost needed a pipe wrench to get it off and by the way when the actor screwed it back in he didn't finish the job as it was not seated on the float assembly correctly.

Just like Wayne D said below, I used a needle to pop all of the blisters in the gasket, reinstalled it, and NO MORE LEAK! Probably won’t last forever but it buys some time and it’s free. : ) Water comes out of each blister so having something absorbent like a napkin is helpful.

Found a solution to the flush valve not falling back into place. We have very hard water and get lime build up. Short of replacing the whole flush valve (which was plumber's solution) regularly, just use vinegar. If you take the black plastic "nut" off you can access the lower assembly. I spray 9% extra strength vinegar onto the parts then with your fingers and an old toothbrush, clean off the lime buildup. Reassemble and all works well. For a while at least, until lime builds up again and process has to be repeated. Lots cheaper than replacing the whole valve.

While I found this video informative, I've found that my flapper seal had also developed bubbles, about 1/16" to 3/16" in diameter. After trying to cut one of the bubbles I discovered that they are very similar to water blisters, so I worked over my seal by popping the blisters with a needle and squeezing them to drained the fluid, wiping the seal with a wash cloth to reveal any more blisters. I have no water softening system and have no longevity information to report, but then again I have not had to spend time and money on a replacement seal yet either. Has stopped the leak for now at least. Bought my Titan model toilet about 6 years ago.

My champion 4 has been a great toilet...But, at only 3 years old the tank cracked and American standard sent me a new tank as the porcelain is guaranteed for life. However, the new tank came with a non buoyant flapper valve ( the original tank had a buoyant flapper valve). This means you have to hold the flush lever down until the water from the tank exists. I transferred the buoyant valve over and it worked normal i.e momentary push on the flush lever. This warranty experience started nicely but ended up to be very annoying.

The new version of this flapper does not have the screw on top. It is one piece. I have called American Standard twice and had to convince the person on the phone that there is a new version. I was sent the parts kit for the version shown in this video. I was sent some instructions to try and hold the plastic stem and turn top housing counter clockwise. This didn't work it felt like the stem was going to snap. I showed the instructions to a plumber and he attempted to change it and said the same it would brake before it came apart. I had this toilet installed as part of a renovation in October and it has been leaking since day one. Not impressed at all and will replace with a Kohler soon

@@mrpayolla I have the same issue that Bill described. I call American Standard, and they sent me out a new seal, and tried to replace it, but was worried I would break the plastic stem. Will order a new flush valve assembly before trying to replace the seal in case I break the plastic stem. The older version of the flapper assembly seems easier to replace the seal on a regular basis without the worry of breaking the plastic stem in the whole assembly. Then you are left with a totally useless toilet. Will try this once and see what happens moving forward. Like yourself, will be looking and researching a Kohler or other brand. Not happy with the Champion 4, should be pulled off the market. FYI, mine is only 1 YEAR OLD and spending too much time on this problem. Will try this correction once, then I will buy another brand of toilet to replace my newly purchased toilet. Will another valve assembly work as a replacement that is proven to have a trouble free Flapper valve, that is also easier to replace every 10+ years, and not every year on the Champion 4.

The newer "Improved Champion" flapper (comes with the Titan Model 4149A American Standard) requires you to hold the guide rod below it and simply unscrew (CCW) the upper part of the flapper. The lower part of flapper (lower float) twisting slightly clockwise, NOT CCW, and remove. The newer design has less chance of leaking due to the lack of another seal where the older black nut on top was, but they are very sensitive to the water level in the tank. I had one start leaking by trickling into the bowl and I could hear the fill mechanism kick in every five minutes and 20 seconds. Called American Standard before heading the hardware store (luckily) and talked to Taylor, she said the water level on the drain tube has to be between 1/4-inch and 1/2-inch from the top. Any higher and it leaks, any lower an it leaks, which I confirmed to be true. Once the water level was right, I had no problem on this 3 month old toilet. The customer service at American Standard is phenomenal. I called on a Saturday, figuring I'd have to leave a message. After punching the 3 buttons 1, 2 and 3 to get to consumer toilets and faucets, an ACTUAL PERSON answered the phone and had me fixed up within 5 minutes. She even stayed on the line, actively, while I made the adjustments and tested it. She also sent me the instructions to remove said flapper valve if necessary in the future and said there is a 10-yr warranty on this Titan toilet. She said if it does end up leaking with the water level set properly, to simply email her and she'll gladly send out replacement parts for this one or any of the other 3 we just installed in a rental.

Well, upon looking online, I don't think the bottom green part (poppet?) is supposed to come off the stem. I can feel that I am getting the notches seated, but there seems to be no way to get the bottom part to lift. Should there be something retaining the bottom green part? Can I glue the underside to the post, or make some kind of cotter pin that can raise it?

From the look of it, it wasn't just the blue seal. When I use the flush lever, the black/grey pole that goes through the middle of the clamshell completely pops up. The clamshell stays in place and does not move. If anyone else sees this, a temporary fix that is working so far has been to wrap a few twists of electrical tape on the underside of the bottom of the clamshell. This lifts everything. The flush may be somewhat harder but it works.

The video goes from showing how to remove the bead chain from the trip lever in a tank to showing a valve assembly that is not installed in a tank. Makes not sense.

How the hell does the flapper leak without seeing water running in the bowl
@francismiller7615
@francismiller7615 Жыл бұрын
Your water is coming out the very bottom of the fill hole and not the top fill holes.....Take some some food coloring pout in your holding tank wait 1/2 or less and when you see the food coloring just ever so slightly flush the handles you will see the leaking in the bottom of the fill hole. Your flapper is bad replace the flapper buy pushing little arrow piece at top of green flapper to the ramp "Notches" at very top of flapper part.... kind of hard turn to your right and then thread on off the flapper and put a new one on it!!!

Replaced gasket seal with new white one, still leaks and the notches are aligned when put together... it drains right to the flush valve seal too so i know its not the valve itself. Unacceptable and a waste of time, money, and more importantly water.

ALSO, i got the seal kit from AS themselves, not an off brand from home depot or anything. disappointed and will be calling for a refund on this toliet.

@@zacharytbairdan off brand is probably better since the AS seals have issues.

Ive had this toilet fir 3 years. I am on my 4th seal. Issues with the flush arm being bent, ive wasted probably over 150 bucks of water bills just cause its always running cause i dont have time to tend to this peice of garbage all the time. Im just gunna get the kohler toilet i have upstairs and pay more now but it will pay off and save myself the headsche which is this stupid toilet!

First this isn’t real life. Show it done in a tank which is not easy. 2. The plastic rod will fall inside the tank if you aren’t aware it can and you’ll have to disassemble the whole toilet to retrieve it. Going today to get a Toto. This product is a disrespect to the name American Standard.

You know how to get this fixed? Report them to the EPA. I don't know how in the hell they can get this crap certified to be efficient when they waste the hell out of water. My toilet is only 8 months old and I'm already having to screw with this crap.

if you look after the repair was made the top retainer is not screwed on all the way, like it was at the beginning of video. this is a poor excuse for a repair video.

@@americanstandard I appreciate that. It’s smart to make it color change from blue to white when the seal goes bad. But, I installed a new seal and it’s already leaking through again.
