I had the same issue , I registered my toilets and there is a 10 year warranty. I called them and they sent new revised seals and problem solved. The video is great as you need to know about the clicks on removal and reassembly.

Dude! Thanks so much for saving me time and money. Your super-comprehensive video and the excellent comments below helped me with 3 things. 1) How to fix the toilet. In my case, it is a leaky flapper 2) Do it for free by calling American Standard as the toilet is under warranty. I didn't save the receipt but the guy was nice enough to do a one-time courtesy shipment 3) Fix it temporarily while I'm waiting for the warranty item to arrive b applying Vaseline on the bottom of the flapper. That stopped the leak for now. Such a great example of the KZfaq community coming together to help each other out. I would've spent at least $40 on doing it myself and $100+ had I called a plumber.

I have an older Champion 4 which I previously did battle with the part that screws into the flapper from the top. After conquering that technique, I replaced another toilet with a newer Champion 4. The new one started phantom flushing after a few months. I opened it up and was faced with a new flapper design. Your video really helped me conquer this one. The new design is an improvement over the older one, but that gray clip seems pretty flimsy. I think the next time I need to replace a toilet, it will not be a Champion 4.

We have a toilet that had a nagging leak a few years ago. I replaced the flapper several times and it still leaked. Old timer at the hardware store told me to apply a coating of Vaseline Petroleum Jelly on the bottom of the flapper where it contacts the opening it seals up. I was skeptical, but gave it a try. Toilet hasn't leaked yet. I did the same thing to our 2nd toilet and both my Mom's toilets when they started leaking, and it fixed those too.

Damn fine video. Thank you. I have two of these toilets in service. One for about 5 or 6 years which has given me zero problems. One I installed a year and a half ago. That is now leaking but I don't know where. Doesn't appear to be the flapper but I'll replace it just to see. This showed me extremely well How to understand a flush valve from American standard Even though I've installed several of my own and repaired all of my own toilets for many many years. Thanks again!

Absolutely super video! I bought 4 yes four toilets because I was tired of the cheap flappers; I also heard good things about American Standard. Well, you are spot on. I changed the first one a year ago and did it the hard way. Slipped off the seal over the top. This time, I took off the entire drop-down flapper. So much faster!!! Some suggestions: take off the flush lever and use latex or rubber gloves, which allow a sure grip if you have a weak grip or a build-up of slime on the parts.

Before replacing anything! Remove flapper cover and make sure the gray ring that holds flapper right under green cover is secure, mine came loose from manufacturer and leaked. Thanks to this video I removed cover and found gray ring loose. Fixed my situation. Good luck people.

I feel your pain, I got tired with replacing toilet parts on these brands, so I switched to the TOTO Drake, that has the neat flush channel instead of holes. I have replaced 2 out of 5 in the house. The MSRP of the Toto Drake will give you a bit of sticker shock, but I have been watching the Amazon prices and have been saving around $100.

Great video. Our friends highly recommended this model. Ad said it could flush ten golf balls! I told my wife next time I accidentally swallow ten golf balls I know my toilet will handle it the next morning. Sadly, the toilet started leaking after six months. Thanks for the tutorial.

Great video. Once I got the flapper off, I found I could turn the bottom a quarter inch and pop the bottom off. That way you can just replace the seal and not have to buy the whole assembly.

Another thank you. I bought 2 of these toilets in 2022 and one is one is now cycling every 20 minutes or so. I couldn't see or hear any leaking but this is most likely the issue. reading in the comments, it sounds like Home Depot now has replacement gaskets or flappers in stock. I will have to check it out. Mine was leaking from the flapper. Took it out and noticed the bottom part was loose and not pressing the seal firmly to the flapper body. Gave it a twist to tighten it up, reinstalled, and all is good. Thanks for the video

man, thank you so much we have had ours for maybe 9 months i already replaced the entire flush valve once and its leaking again i took the silicone gasket off and were the bubbles were in it i just took a needle and poked a hole and water came out the gasket then flattened out i put it back on and no more "running" toilet will see how long it lasts.. i did order replacement seals just to have in case this does not last again thank you for the video this was the best instructional video i have found for the champion toilet

Thanks for the tip on the top screwing off if you hold the stem below. You can just buy a replacement gasket and replace once you take the cap off. The cap has a grey plastic large retaining ring that you can easily pry off and replace the underlying gasket

Great video. FYI, Fluidmaster 510A-001 is the flush valve seal alone so you don't need to buy the whole assembly. 🙂

I have the exact same toilet. I had to replace the flush assy also after about a year. After some research, I found that the flapper goes bad because of the use of tablet cleaners being placed in the tank. The chemicals/chlorine cause the rubber to bubble up and cause it to not seat flush on the valve. My wife now uses the stick on ones in the bowl instead of the tank.

We also use those chemical tablets and now have a running tank. I bought a generic replacement valve seal and replaced the original, but it still runs.

@@JasonMaehl If you have stopped using the tablets, I would recommend replacing it with OEM. I bought four of them as spares and havent had to replace it since we stopped using the tablets.

Excellent video. I had the flapper accidently come off. Not sure how. Home Depot couldn't figure the problem although I showed them the video. They sold me a 25 dollar kit which I luckily didn't install. All I had to do was twist the flapper back like you showed.

I have three Champion 4 toilets installed over several years. I know, I know. My thinking was over that time the design process would have improved but it did not. All three have the ghost flush. I called American Standard and received a new gasket for free ( this was 5 years ago). I changed the blistered gasket (very easy) not the cap as shown in this video. Six months later ghost flush again. I see NU Flush has a conversion kit for this toilet, to go to the tried and true flapper valve. I may purchase one and if it works after six months may get two more conversion kits. I see there is also a class action suit regarding this faulty toilet.

Not offhand, but they do make a new and improved seal now. I'd try that before tossing the toilet. I love the power of this one.

Upon searching online for a valve assembly I find that none shown actually state my model number. Will the valve assembly used in this video be the valve assembly to use for American Standard model 4266? I completed agree that having to disassemble the whole tank is ridiculous! I wish it was just my flapper. Unfortunately the plastic rod that runs through the center of mine snapped off. Im thoroughly aggravated! Great job doing the video! Best vid I found while searching all afternoon and I can't express enough how happy it has made me! Thank you!!!

It worked just as you said but I encountered an issue where the shaft on my toilet did not have the barbs on each side to keep the shaft from falling down into the toilet and yes mine disappeared into oblivion lol. So I took the new shaft to use and found the next issue. The hole in the center of the flush valve has reliefs built into it for the locking tabs to pass through. Mine does not. So I ended up cutting them off so the new shaft woo I’ll old pass through the hole in my existing flush valve. If it happens to come loose, at least the new shaft can come out. Thanks for the help !

Great video. I've had the champion 1V For probably 6 plus years & have been very happy. However.. recently after putting in new flooring my toilet rarely flushes first time. I don't have a leaking flapper. Could it be it's not tight enough to new flooring? Any theories are greatly appreciated.

Hard to say, but I would start with the resent floor change. You might have a seal issue partially blocking the exit of the toilet.

The thing I like about this toilet design is out do you flush it? There’s still about a gallon of water in there which means if you put a traditional flapper valve in there and converted it, it would be dumping that extra gallon and it would flush good like toilets used to before the regulatory people ruined them.😅😂

This toilet does flush extremely well, I've never plugged it. That's why I bought it, I HATE these new low water toilets. They plug anytime you wipe more than once.

@@TKCL yep, typical government regulators they don’t want you to use 2 gallons per flush so they make 1.6 gallon toilets that you have to flush twice. 😂😂

Thanks! I just ordered the part to do this. While I have the tank off, I'm going to replace the gaskets that are around the bolts that hold the tank on. Is that overkill? I figure that all gaskets will eventually wear out and leak so I might as well do it now. What do you think? My toilet is about 15 years old.

15 years old is worth replacing all gaskets in my opinion.

The American Standard Champion toilet isn't the problem. The gasket may be suspect to early failure, but the manufacture will replace it for FREE. Every plumbing part ever manufactured will have a component that isn't bullet proof. In this case your water most likely will continue to cause failures of that gasket. The newer replacement gaskets seem to hold up much longer no doubt due to different material being used.

I was able to just buy an off brand gasket for my tank. I have only have it 9 months and the manufacturers gasket was all bulged. An $8 amazon part fixed this issue.

If you call them they send you 6 new seals and instructions. Lowers sells just the seal.

So I encountered a problem that wasn't addressed in this video and it may be because the newer flush valves don't come apart easily or something. I was able to take the old flapper off inside the tank but the new flapper would not come off of the new flush valve. What you can do in this case is unscrew the top where the chain connects to the new flapper. You will see the seal held on by a gray plastic ring. Twist that and remove it and take that seal out and replace the one that's leaking on the old flapper and put the old flapper with the new seal back on.

Would any other repair kits work for the Champion 4? And do the newer flaps last better?

You can also buy just the seal ring at Lowes for $6.00. The weird thing is the lower black portion that holds the silicone ring in place is not concentric. Mine had a mark on one of the tabs to show how it goes back together. I don't know if it came from the factory that way or the previous owner put some fingernail polish on to mark it. However if you do not have it aligned properly the flapper will be offset when you get it back together. Why they didn't make it concentric is beyond me.

Thank you for your video. I also have another American Standard toilet and it's the same exact issue with the damn flapper. I don't see why they don't fix that damn issue with the flapper bubbling up and causing a gap on the seal that makes it leak. Makes you not want to buy their products due to their issues. Well I called American Standard and the rep stated that the toilets are under a 10 year warranty and they going to send me a couple of flapper rubber seals at no charge. I would recommend you call American Standard them and explain.

They do cover parts, but I wanted mine fixed quickly. I also found just the seal.

I have the same unit in my tank. I can't believe the engineers at American Standard thought this was an improved design. First off, I didn't see anywhere in your video if it's possible to replace JUST the blistered gasket ? The previous design had a black lock nut on top of the green flapper cover that you could unscrew. Then you could replace JUST the gasket. This new design eliminated that black lock nut. Even if I was able to remove the flapper cover as you describe in your video, can you replace JUST the "blistered" gasket ? If you have to replace the entire top flapper piece which comes with a new gasket, I don't see where you're saving any money since you would have to buy the entire flush valve assembly just to replace the gasket !

So I had the older model. There was seperation forming, but I developed a crack on that plastic bit on top. With the older model, you cant just swap these out. The way the top fits the bottom has changed, as well as the thread diameter.

Streaking is usually due to leaking. You need to replace the seal.

3:08 Sadly, you contacted everyone.BUT A.S. about your issue. American Standard DID NOT LET YOU DOWN; Flush valves are guaranteed for 10 YEARS by A.S. As long as you registered your toilets, just call them and they will send you the Parts for FREE.

Mines just broke trying to do this click turn method 😮.. then the remaining stem fell down the hole 😭.... Whole time I could have just stretched the rubber flapper from around the plunger thingy.. the replaced it.. 😳.. now I have to order a flapper assembly and figure out how to install.. thanks buddy

You're the first person out of thousands to complain of this. You obviously have a different flapper. There's no possibility of stretching this style seal around the flapper. It MUST be removed. I've replaced two toilets, one with the full valve replacement and one with the NEW seal (found after posting this video) BOTH require the removal of the plastic stem and flapper.

@@TKCL I have the exact same one.. it's cool.. it looks like it was one solid piece.. as soon as I turned it.. it snapped 😭.. and I swear I didn't turn it too firmly.... .. maybe it was a little corroded...

Can you replace an older Champion flush valve flapper that has a thumb screw on the top with the newer flapper that your demonstration shows? Thank you

Took a chance and bought the flush valve for the one piece Champion as the picture of the flapper looked similar…green with a black thumb screw. It worked! Also the silicone gasket and o-ring replaced. Of course I’m left with a non usable shaft but it did the trick. Going to try to attach 2 pics. Feel free to use. Thanks for your attention.

Can you tell me how to replace the rubber seal/gasket at the bottom of the tank under the float assembly. It’s the rubber seal that should be flush with the bottom of the tank. Also, please tell me what that seal is called. Thank you.

Funny thing i just readjusted my float, it had somehow crept up to make the water overflow for months...had no idea it was doing that...! This was in the guest bath...hardly used, actually should have just turned off the water supply since we don't get no guests...- doh!
