What a handsome fella, I had a pure breed staffordshire that I had rescued as her owners were going on vacation and because they had nowhere to house the dog while gone they were going to put her down and due to the fact the dog ahd already killed two dogs in her past they felt they had justification to do so smh! I went into their home to meet the dog and found her trapped in a cage in a livingroom full of people and the second they let her out she came running straight to me and heeled by my feet, it was right then I knew they'd been keeping this poor girl caged out of fear of responsibility if the dog got loose and killed another dog (she was originally rescued from a New York city dog fighting ring so it was all she knew was to be aggressive towards other dogs and to try and end their life) well let me tell you, as a 5-6yr old dog the very second she was dropped off at my house we started training to see if she was workable and she immediately started taking my commands and showing how willing she was to work and no joke within the first 10min of her being in an entirely new environment to her she had already learned 3 new tricks that the previous owner said they'd never seen her do before! I told this family that I would dog sit for them while they went and enjoyed their vacation and that when they got back the dog would be here if they wanted to pick her up but they never came back and she was one of the best damn dogs I ever had the pleasure of owning and working with she was so athletic she literally climbed over 20ft up a huge maple tree in my yard and we eventually broke her of her old/bad habit with other dogs but it certainly took time and a alot of work! I even gave her her own bedroom where I kept her food dish and I put a TV in there and left it on playing the animal planet channel nonstop so she'd get used to hearing other animals and learn that that was okay... Unfortunately she did end up passing away at 13yrs old but man was it ever a good run we took together so staffies will always hold a special place in my heart, absolutely amazing and very loyal companions!

Question: I was doing ok on the place board, but then I tried to teach the stay in the crate and stay. Now, he's scared to death of the door and won't some out. I promise, I didn't scare him or rattle the cage. I feel like I made some steps backwards. Suggestions? I isn't having any "free" from the enclosure. I had a handful of pieces out the door with multiple "free" cues.

Can you do the same for a three years old dog?
@troy5292
@troy5292 3 ай бұрын
Yes, you can train your 3 YO dog. This works for all dogs, all ages, and all breeds. Puppies are young and have not developed bad habits so they are easier to train, but with the same/similar tactics, the same can be done for any dog. This is covered in great detail in the Obedience 101 course and Leashed course at DIYK9.com.

@troy5292
@troy5292 3 ай бұрын
The place board in the elevated position with the feet down provide a black and white, on or off indicator that is simple and clear to dogs. You're either on the place board, or you're off. There's not an in-between point. Once the dog is doing better, the place board is put down with the legs up. This doesn't require the dog to step down so the on/off isn't as clear, but there is still the visual picture in the dog's head that it has to cross the border before breaking the stay. This is covered in great detail in the Obedience 101 course and Leashed course at DIYK9.com.

What type of collar do you recommend for this?
@troy5292
@troy5292 3 ай бұрын
Biothane leash and biothane martingale style flat collar, and the Herm Sprenger 2.25mm collar is the prong collar used for most dogs, but there are exceptions for some breeds/sizes/strengths. These can all be found under the Amazon affiliate page linked here. - www.amazon.com/shop/americanstandarddogtraining. Look under the dog training equipment link. The 6' leash is what most use, and what you see Garret using in most of his videos. Double hook the collars, meaning connect the pong collar and the martingale collar to the leash as a backup. Prong collars will fail and come loose. It's not a matter of if, it's just a matter of when. I'm one of Garret's moderators and I hang my prong collar by the end every time I put it on, both to make sure it is not twisted, and to make sure all the links are in place. About a month ago I did this, and everything was fine, and then I put the prong collar on and it fell off and to the floor. I thought I just didn't connect the quick-connect fully, but that was still clicked. The prong link had somehow come loose. Once you get your dog fully off leash trained, if you want to take your training that far, then this becomes less of a concern. All of these things are covered in the courses at DIYK9.com.

When do you reward or pay them in the crate?
@troy5292
@troy5292 3 ай бұрын
Absolutely yes! Reward dogs for habits you like, and correct habits you do not like. Training this is more complex that what Garret mentioned here and is covered over multiple sessions in great detail in the Obedience 101 course and Leashed course at DIYK9.com. I believe this is also covered in the Puppy courses, but I'd have to go back and look to be sure.

A lot of well known trainers are no longer teaching the stay command, why?
@AmericanStandardK9
@AmericanStandardK9 3 жыл бұрын
I have not heard of that trend and can't imagine why you wouldn't want to teach a stay command. It's a pretty critical command to have and we actually spend a good portion of our training program making sure we have a rock solid stay under all manners of distraction, distance, and good duration. Again, it's necessary in day to day life with a civilian dog at home and just as necessary in a tactical patrol dog situation. It's part of most patrol dog certification tests across the country. Thanks for watching!
@Labrador1985
@Labrador1985 11 ай бұрын
The reason is that for some competition it’s not allowed (by their rules) to use a stay command. Here the dog should always stay in the last command, sit, down etc. unless told otherwise. Even if this is not practical in real life. 🙈🦮
@troy5292
@troy5292 3 ай бұрын
@@Labrador1985 I'd wager the competition trainer has taught the stay commend very well, then overlayed other training to tweak the stay commend without using the verbal or hand command in a competition, so the stay command is implied if not spoken.

That's part of the good canine citizenship training too. Having a dog that is non-reactive to people and other animals. There's another video of Garret's I love where he is walking a German Shepherd (I think GSD?) off leash by a small outdoor patio and the GSD is off leash. They pass a few people eating with their dog, and the dog is going absolutely nuts trying to get at the GSD. The GSD never even looked at the dog if I remember correctly, and just looked straight ahead or focused on Garret. One of Garret's assistant trainers was walking another dog behind him that was equally well trained and ignored the other dog. And this dog in the video is only 11 weeks old and full of energy to go run and play, but just watched with interest, but never broke away to try and play. That's pretty impressive.

Check out the courses at DIYK9.com. The specific course for this is "The Perfect Walk". The course is over 5 hours of practical training and theory, including the dog psychology on a walk (versus a human viewpoint), and how to fix leash reactivity and triggers. This may not be the case for every dog, but I had my dog trained 95% of the way in a single session, and I had never trained a dog to walk on a leash with manners. I had to do one more mid-level correction on a walk since as the level of distraction from my back yard to going out on the roads with all the new sights and sounds and smells, but she's walked perfectly on a leash since, and that was 16 months ago. We see plenty of rabbits on our walks and I can use feather light leash pressure to silently put my dog into a sit, and we just sit there watching the rabbits, sometimes as close as 5 feet away. And although excited, my dog will stay quiet and not give chase when the rabbit takes off running which to me is pretty impressive. Part of that reliability came from the "Leashed" course too, but she's rock solid. The only kryptonite I've had that she wasn't able to resist was last fall when a doe and two fawns came out onto the road about 75 feet from us. Echo went totally nuts trying to go after them. I corrected her 3x before she returned to a calm enough state to go into a good heel position. Once calmed, we walked to where the deer were in the road and tracked them into the small, wooded area where they ran, and I released Echo so she could go to the end of the leash without pulling, and allowed her to scent track (with leash manners) until we reached a property line I didn't want to cross, then we came back to the road and continued out walk. Unfortunately, I've been unable to find any deer willing to schedule training time with us to further train my dog how to behave around deer. I learned this all at DIYK9.com.

@@marklloyd4153 I saw that video a while back, and it was pretty & amazing to watch. I don't have the background to know who should have won, but I do have enough human experience to know sometimes things are judged incorrectly because it's easier, or judged subjectively. One example is when I was in my Tae Kwon Do class years ago, Master Alfonso and his wife (now thankfully the x-wife) were both instructors. A teenage female student ended up sparring against the x-wife in a tournament, and although several people knew the student obviously won, the judges didn't think it was appropriate to allow the student go back with the gold medal and the instructor/co-owner of the school to go back with a silver medal. Again, I don't have the education to say firmly if Jeremy should have won or not, but he and his dog did one amazing performance that was worthy of a high ranking.

Just a question....we expect perfection from our dogs but not humans.....because that's judgemental or whatever....so how is it fair to dogs to expect that from them when we all aren't perfect....

We always say there is no such thing as perfection in dog training. Just keep trying to sharpen the knife so to speak. Keep them as sharp as we can. Can't expect perfection.
