Northwestern University's Amethyst Quartet earned top honors in spring 2008 by winning the MTNA National Collegiate Chamber Music Competition (Denver, CO), the Coleman-Saunderson Prize for Woodwinds and Brass at the Coleman Chamber Ensemble Competition (Pasadena, CA), and the Gold Medal of the Winds Division of the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition (South Bend, IN).
Their performance and competition repertoire included David Maslanka's 2006 composition Recitation Book, written for the Masato Kumoi Quartet of Japan, and Salinas's own arrangement of Six Bagatelles by György Ligeti.

Zachary Pfau - Baritone Saxophone

(finished the video) Oh my god. At some points, this didn't even sound like saxophone (in a good way). I've never heard a sax quartet sound this nice. That alto player's intonation was perfect.. ALL of the players' intonation was perfect.. I'm just mind blown right now. Jesus Christ.

That soprano sax player can sit uncannily still. Every time he moves for taking a breath after playing for 30 seconds or so like a manikin, my heart drops for a moment like "omg it lives!" Beside that, these people eat, breathe, and live saxoperfection.

my sax quartet(we are in high school) did this last year and I thought we did a pretty good interpretation of this but you guys are INCREDIBLE!!! The pitch is soooo consistent and the tone as individuals and as an ensemble is phenomenal

My ensemble, after long consideration of how difficult it might be after hearing you guys play it fast and beautiful, have decided to do this ensemble. exceptional technical prowess! I know saxophones can play very soft tones but to tone down after 0.30 to such a soft level together as an ensemble with discipline in the articulation and control is amazing!
