Amethyst Wisteria with Peter McDermott

An ultra-compact variety from America that is perfectly suited to growing in UK gardens.
Unlike virtually all other varieties of Wisteria though, many of which can take up to five years to flower, Amethyst Falls will reliably flower in its first year.
The flowers will pour like a river of lilac from this fantastic plant throughout May, filling the air with the perfume of spring flowers.
In its early years it will remain compact and manageable and as such makes a brilliant patio plant perfect for growing in a pot.
Eventually it will reach a height of 12-15ft and will spread to around 6ft if left un-pruned. However, it can be maintained at half this size and still yield masses of flowers every single spring from this year onwards!

Yes, mine bloomed gloriously this first year! Wow! I didn't have or notice any fragrance but the flowers were abundant on a 3' vine. Amazing in zone 5!

Thanks for sharing. I have one of these kinds for the last few years, and I am growing in a container. Good thing is that it produces flowers every year, but size of the clusters is like a tennis ball shaped. I have multiple new plants from its suckers and they are doing well. Only thing is the fragrance, little or less.

Just bought some here in Windsor Ontario. Going to have it climb up our pergola. I seem to have lucked out with getting Amethyst Falls.

Can this thing flower in partial shade or sun ?

It is so different from Asian wisteria because it is native to North America - called Wisteria frutescens. Amethyst falls is a sterile variety that supposedly has larger flowers.

What would recommend for potted wisteria? Such a type of fertilizer/feed, area to face?

Most multi-purpose plant food will suffice. Although we recommend fish, blood and bone for the best results. Another advantage is no seed pods to tempt pets & kids to play with/eat, as the plant is poisonous, esp. the seeds. Also less mess w/out the pods.

You forgot the mention that amethyst wisteria blooms smell like cat pee, which is important to know before planting it too close to your windows or balcony.

We have heard this from some customers. But many don't report any smell. Suppose smell is quite a subjective thing. If unsure best to check one at your local garden centre first, and if smell concerns, plant further away, yes. Would be such a shame to miss out on the lovely foliage though, so personally it wouldn't stop us!
