How to #prune a #wisteria. Both winter and summer pruning for maximum #blossom
Please visit my website and Garden Shop here: www.marksgardenuk.com/
In this video I give an overview of the #pruning regime for the wisteria in order to maximise the blossom.
I also provide some useful hints and tips for maintenance.
Be patient, the wisteria can take a few seasons to come into #flower but it's worth the wait. Eventually you will be rewarded with a cascading waterfall of beautiful #nectar filled #blooms which provide a food source for #polinating insects, look amazing and have a beautiful scent.
Prune the wisteria twice a year. The first time prune it back to five #leaf sets, do this approximately one month after the blossom has disappeared and it has produced many #leafy #tendrils. Then in the late winter or very early spring prune the same branches back to two #buds which will encourage many #flowering #spurs.
Make sure you keep a control of the size and scope of your plant because it can become leggy and take over, it is quite invasive when it gets going.

This is my first time having Wisteria. She's about 10-15 years old but I only moved in last year. I pruned her WAAAAY back, down to sticks in January 2021 and she did bloom a bit, but not a lot.... then she got really bushy and green (she's on an arbor trellis, lovely) but I didn't know to prune back in August or after the bloom until I watched your video! So her leaves all fell off in January and just now got around to pruning. But what I read last year was to cut waaaay back to the woody sticks... and I did that once again. There were pods or what looked like blooms but I cut all that back ... as I didn't prune in August. I will have to set up a reminder to prune back after blooming this year (hopefully, I didn't cut that short and won't have any blooms!- think maybe that happened last year - pruned to much in Winter ... and this year pruning on first day of Spring where there 'WERE' buds .... Ahhh ... well, live and learn. Thanks so much for your video, very helpful!! Will prune twice this upcoming year, and not back to the hard wood, lol!! :)

Hi. Thanks for this. I think it depends on your objectives. It might be wise to sacrifice some blooming potential this year just to bring the thing back under control. Mark this an excellent video regarding wisteria pruning. @MarksHouseandGardenUK
@MarksHouseandGardenUK Жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you for watching. I understand cuttings are difficult but you can try. You can also try collecting and planting seed pods although I believe it can be complex and take 15 years. I've heard the easiest way is to bury a few of the whips in soil whilst they are still growing. It's called laying i think(?) but if they are moving imminently this may not be feasible.

🎉Thank you . I have a 25 year old wisteria over the peak of my portch 2 years ago it was wild and i had to get someone to cut back of of the slate roof. It was fine for after that blooming each year but last year it fell off its framed because it had so many blooms it was to heavy so i had to cut all the under side to get into my front door we had to houst it up and tie it around the beam . I keep the long shoots cut because i don't wat it to get as bad as it did befor . Sadly this year i didn't have any flowers but did on the wild bit going into the trees. I left lots of blooms on the top bit over the porch so i dont know why it hasnt flowerd this year. It was in may last year when i had to cut it. And this year im having to cut the long stems again because its touching the roof again. Can you suggest anything for me what im doing wrong. After spacing the branches better, it’s now shot out multiple leaf shoots from singular points, and they’re all brown leaves. Do I leave these multiple shoots until late winter? Any ideas on the brown leaves? It was quite the renovation!

I have owned my wisteria tree for 2.5 years. I purchased it as a small bush ;approximately 12 -inches. I have it planted in the middle of my front yard. The tree is now 5 ft. I had -one bloom. I would simply love for it to bloom more… can I boost it with a flower boosting agent? The strange thing is about this tree is the tendrils appear as though they are grabbing me😅😅 I sometimes need to fight them off😅. Truly an aggressive tree.

Hi, it is about 9:00 p.m. in Idaho USA. I have a blue moon wisteria actually six of them that I'm training to go up my pergola. They bloomed this spring but they're still young plants. My question about pruning them. You mentioned to cut them back to five leaves. However, this plant has seven leaves on the stem, so I'm not quite sure how bushy to keep it or how low to cut it. Please advise. Thank you

Thank you for the informative video! So should I do anything with a young wisteria? Our plant is on it's 3rd year after having grown over 11 feet from the 2nd year! At this time we're trying to have it grow across the top of the pergola so it can create some shade. Also, can, or how, do I create another plant from cutting?

Hi jerry. You could prune it a little if you wish. Or alternatively you could let it keep going until it has covered your pergola. Has it ever flowered? I heard they can take 5 years to flower. Regards propagating it. I understand that cuttings is difficult. I tried a few times and always failed. Layering is supposed to be successful, pinning a whip to the earth until roots. They do produce seed pods but propagating from seed is complicated and takes years. Mark

@@kjcase hi jerry. I had this same question before. My thought is that i never pruned mine of and always had festoons of beautiful blooms. I suspect a lot of the energy after flowering will go into new long green whips, which, when the plant is established are quite invasive anyway. So my personal opion would be prune if you want but don't worry too much of you can't. Mark

I've had great results with root cuttings. I remember reading online that the plant will also bloom faster. I've given root cuttings to several friends some had blooms as early as 3 years. Others have taken up to 6 years. As you said it's all in the care of the plant. Proper pruning is time consuming but worth it. Here in the U.S. many people look at it as a menacing weed. 😞

@MarksHouseandGardenUK
@MarksHouseandGardenUK 2 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks fpr this. The bean like pods are indeed seed pods. And in fact can be germinated and grown on. But it can take 15 years to produce a plant (layering/pinning a vine into soil is suggested as the best way to propagate). Regarding the pods, i just leave them on, they don't seem to have a detrimental effect on blossom. And my hope is that will provide food for an animal at some point. Thanks for your comment and watching. Are you UK based?

Interesting. They can be slow to get going. Does the plant which already exists seem healthy enough. It may need more light and feeding if it is close to a tree. Also, i might consider checking the soil for acidity. But if the plant looks reasonably healthy perhaps give it a little longer and plenty food and water before relocation. Hi. There have been a couple of years when i didn't prune mine because i still wanted it to reach out. During those years is still flowered, but not as much. The pruning regime I've explained is to maximise blossom, you should still get some blossom even if you don't. I also prune now to control the size and shape because otherwise it would take over. I hope that helps.
