@Mike Studmuffin If you want to kill yourself trying to gain success, you go right ahead, sir, but do not recommend this to others. I have been through so much in life that when I talked about some of it with my therapist, he became traumatized and said "I don't know what to say", yet that does not mean that others should suffer same terrible fate. Get off the hate cloud, sir.

I think people today especially forget how hard things were for female 1 & 2nd gen idols (and still are). A lot of things have improved but are not as good as they need to be. Such as forcing minors or even legal age girls to do sexual things they're uncomfortable with, starvation diets and not giving proper treatment for those suffering from mental stress. Ryu Sera is an amazing person who's come so far I hope she gets her second wave of success solo.

The darker side of KPOP is terrifying and those who choose to ignore it, thinking being an idol is glitter and gold needs to wake up. From the strict diets, exercise, trainings, s*xualization of especially younger group members, a*use from the companies or mistreatment, Saesangs, strict contract/company rules and much much more. I'd never dream of such a career, these people are very strong. Another thing idols are humans and yet they can't be afforded the luxury of being just that, they can't for a second show true emotions or enjoy their lives otherwise its usually a MASSIVE scandal. How dare he/she, etc. 😑
@zosiexofficial
@zosiexofficial 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly? I think that people choose to ignore it because they're a bit "part of the problem". Saesangs and sexualisation are reasons why there are so many kpop haters out there (same with Justin Bieber, One Direction and so on). Really. Before i got into kpop i met so many people (especially girls because, i think, in Europe or America it isn't very socially acceptable for boys to listen to pop) who were having crush on their idols, sexualizing them, being obsessed with them and it really rubbed me the wrong way. I don't know if i could call myself a hater back then, but i had negative opinion on kpop because of these people. I started listening to it because of my best friend who was a girl group stan (and i've never met anyone obsessed with female idol yet so i wasn't so "discouraged") and i am still hardcore girlgroup stan but i can't get myself into any boygroup because it reminds me about these fans, that i've met couple years ago, who wanted to date them and it creeps me out. Of course i'm not saying that all fans of BTS or EXO or any boygroup are like that (and obviously i don't want to hate on these groups, i think they're talented boys since they're succesful in such competitive industry), but i'm just saying that i was unlucky to have met only that worse part of the kpop fandom and, unfortunately, it managed to influence my opinion on music itself. And I'm not saying that girlgroup stans are so great and i'm better than anyone! No, no, no! Absolutely no! We have to remember that in Asia, since i belive men aren't shamed so often for their music taste, so they actually listen to pop, sexualization of girls is also present and i think it's even more common than towards male idols (just like we see in this video). So sad conclusion is that kpop industry is kinda built on fans' obsession and having romantic interest in idols (i think that's why there is dating ban... because of jealous fans) and it's hard to swallow pill, but, just like you've said, we need to be aware of the dark side of kpop.

I don't think people ignore it these days unless they're 12. How idols are treated like shit by their companies and how the public (mainly korean) likes to put them under fire for every step they take is not fresh news to any kpop stan or even casual listener at this point, since kpop got big in the west articles about the dark side of kpop pop up every time, and people love to use the narrative that kpop groups are 100% controlled plastic dolls (even western pop artists, specially when pop was bigger in the 00's and early 10's, were just as manufactured, the west just hides it better and has other focuses instead of not dating or dancing). Things are very slowly starting to change, extreme diets are not talked about with praise on tv anymore, a few idols date here and there and even if they do face backlash, it's not even half of what it was before, when dating could end your idol life, so maybe in 10 more years the industry will look completely different? Idk. And about the having crushes on idols thing that the other person mentioned, I don't see what's wrong with it? Having a little crush on someone we think is cute and admire is natural and out of our control, and not the same as obsession lol, you can have it without thinking that you want to marry them or not respecting their personal life choices, I don't see why you should group someone who thinks their favorite idol is attractive with sassaengs, let the girls live lol 💀 not to mention girls who obsess over gg's can have crushes on them too, not everyone is straight and the lgbtq+ communitie is very present in the kpop fandom

Here's my opinion. I don't think idols should even BEGIN training until they are legal adults (18), and can make the decision to leave their families and be in the hands of strangers. Before this, they can take local singing, acting, and dance lessons to get prepared, as well as frequent talks about how to protect themselves in such an industry. With 2-5 years of training after this, they would still be debuting at around 21-24, which is a MUCH better age and will lead to much less harassment and abuse. They would still have an extremely long career with much less damage. Men should not be looking at CHILDREN sexually, and once you put them on stage, you're putting them in danger. There is NO reason an idol needs to begin training as a child, except to satisfy sick perverts. It's not like child acting in which you NEED a child, so I see absolutely no reason for an idol or trainee to be underage. If they're truly passionate, they would be happy to wait till adulthood to begin training, and have even more fundamentals from learning on their own.

Guys go through it too. I remember watching Shindong and Kangin constantly yo-yoing with their weight. Sad thing is SM management put the pressure on Leeteuk to make sure they lost the weight every time they regained it. It also seemed like every idol group was collectively getting thinner. Now it’s all about showing off their six packs. It’s really sad how inhumane management groups are to these kids. Kpop needs to stop acting surprised every time an idol commits suicide. The body and brain can only handle so much before it looks for a way to stop the pain.

Imagine having the dream to become an idol, you finally get the chance to live it and learn that your dream has turned into a nightmare. This is so sad. I feel for all idols. I feel for everyone that has/had to go through this. And it sickens me that shows/interviews hear that and don't really worry because this is "normal for an idol or anyone who wants success." This HURTS me so much. I'm recovering from disordered eating because a person I had in my life forced this on me. I will never understand how anyone can see this as normal. I have a personality disorder due to trauma caused by other people and just...this broke me. But it's so important, people need to see and hear her story.

What I hate the most is fans trying to come here and say "oh my idol was born skinny" ALMOST NO ONE IS NATURALLY this skinny, this is not normal, it's not healthy. This channel is pretty respectful and doesn't just talk about the weight of this celebrities but the reasons why they took things so far and in newer generations I've just learnt to not trust the "we eat a lot ^^" but i had fans get angry at me for not believing it. It's not okay for young impressionable children to think this is normal. Kpop is specially hard on women so it's overall terrible to watch, i can't stan how i used to anymore.

Idols in japan suffer as well but it's more about sexualizing, SA and being treated like nothing then never getting paid. Very similar to Kpop. There are exceptions but even in akb48 franchise, there was sexualized issues a while ago with not adult members. Although atleast it's working to change and has been addressed already. For unpopular groups that is not the case, teens may be sexualized and taken advantage of by company but it's their faults, not the company even though they are just school girls who have a dream. Long hours at school to long hours practicing late in the dance studio.

this honestly makes me wonder about idols under the big companies too, like SM or JYP... they have the reputation of class and top quality releases or whatever, but I wonder if they treat the idols the same way. like, we never REALLY know what they’re experiencing. even when idols say “I love my company, they treat me very well and let me eat whatever I want”, what if they’re just contractually obliged to say that? it’s unethical if any company treats their idols this way, like products, and such treatment needs to be called out. most idols look exactly like the girls in Nine Muses, (a few exceptions) but they’re all borderline underweight. has anything really changed? are we sure these idols aren’t being made to lose large amounts of weight in unbelievably short periods of time? will we ever find out.

The big 3 companies have been known to have cases of mistreatment of this kind too, a good example being JYP and the constant scrutiny their idols are in regarding their weight, some of it even being public (JY Park has made rather harsh comments on his idols' bodies on camera before) and all the extreme cases of dieting SM idols experience. YG isn't completely innocent either.

This also speaks to our modern society as a whole. Like the obsession with being thin for woman is just to toxic. We see the nine muses girls suffer from depression and none cares. As long as they look good. And that is the message younger girls in Korea hear. For female groups it is not about the music. It is about the waistline. And nothing really has changed with this thin-obsession. None is okay with their own body nowadays. And that is reflected on those groups. They have to represent the ideal image
