Wow! Decades ago I had a student job in the team that repaired A1200 boards from UK customer returns. We actually used to use a couple of demo scene disks to test the boards because they gave the system such a good workout. =) Thanks for the nostalgia blast!

I buy 40% hydrogen peroxide from a cleaning company at $30 aud for 5 litres. I have done a couple of keyboards with a diluted solution in the oven at 40 c for a couple of hours. The keys come out great and it costs next to nothing. Can't wait for the next video, thanks JB!

I bought my C64 in 2019. It was FILTHY!!! Granted the dirt wasn't stuck quite this bad, but still bad. I gave it a nice cleaning and it looked mostly brand new. Well since then it got pretty dirty. I was constantly wiping dirt off of it (my house is the worst for dust I've seen in my entire life). Then I had to replace the cartridge port. De-oxit wasn't doing the job anymore and my power cable was trash. It couldn't handle the current and unless I powered the U2+ externally, the computer had massive issues due to the voltage drop (3.5V.....and other than color glitches it was still working) So I replaced that with a proper power cable as well. I gave it a nice cleaning again. That was about 2 months ago..........well it's dirty again. This house I swear!!!

Galvanized metal always disappoints me, even dry it seems to fail and rust, even fingerprints on it can produce rust. O_o???With RF modulators, if it gets wet you better believe there will be rust underneath it heh. ;) Been trying to think what RF preservation serves and haven't come up with much, like my 4K has a coaxial port for cable TV services but any vintage console going through that would look poor. Largely I think the Composite mod movement has paid off for old things without that port whether consoles or CRTs.

At that time we had AmigaOS 3.1 running on 3.0 ROMs. But it would be better to burn two 3.1 EEPROMs or to get ROMs. The ROM 3.1 with two ICs for A1200 and A4000 (A3000) are the same. The other version with one 3.1 ROM was for A500 (+), A600, A2000. The later OS all require 3.1 ROMs, but some ROM routines were then replaced by new routines on floppy disk / HDD.

Nice cleaning for this A1200 and previously to the C-64. Just wondering about the original power supply, was it complete writeoff after the flood? Especially if it had power on while the flood happened?
@danielmantione
@danielmantione 2 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily: The flood likely caused an RCD trip before water did reach the power supply. It it likely it just needs to be cleaned and inspected.

Am skeptical regarding using IPA alcohol on the keyboard membrane, even if applied gently, I think it dries up the conductive black contacts. Others suggest to just simply use damp cloth with water instead, what do you think ?
@NicolaiSyvertsen
@NicolaiSyvertsen 2 жыл бұрын
Since you can get replacement membranes I wouldn't bother trying to fix the original one. They are not even costly. I'm afraid even with a replacement membrane there can still be contact issues due to the conductive pads on the keys themselves needing thorough cleaning.
@CompuforceWally
@CompuforceWally 2 жыл бұрын
Have bought many replacement membranes too, they usually cost around 35€ excluding shipping costs. But I usually end up buying these as the stock membranes give me trouble that are not worth it due to time consuming..

With all those SMD parts and narrow traces, Jan did the right thing! Also, the A1200 postdated the capacitor plague, so it's probably OK.

I have a commodore 128 with everything: the original package (much oldered but not in a too bad condition cardboard btw, I have it in my basement with air flowing through the grids though). In the package there are all the disks (also cp/m disk), and i also have external drive 5" (the last model, gray and quite flat, not the c64 old one) with it's own original package.The computer lacks some keys and it's much old, he doesn't turn on (I think he is damaged), I just watch retrocomputer videos like yours and I like it very much, but im not a technician or a tech tinkerer, id just love to turn it on and play some games from disk and I'd like to program it in c128 basic, I loved to do graphics with the basic 7.0 graphics commands, what should i do? Can I send all the package to u for fixing it (lol it seems like i want to profit of your skills, but im just asking even for just advice), I would send money for re-sending it back, or for repair components or just for what it costs, or should i search (if they exist) for computer shops that fix old commodore computers where i live, in my area? Im from southern Italy near Naples, but until now I never considered to make it fix that old c128, so I don't even know from where to start, thnx

Just to say my thoughts: You are doing great not using WD40 with the keyboard springs. Well, in your place I would have used wax for furnitures in spray. Why am I talking about not using oil?. I have a wall clock and it has been running for ...40 years?. The last time it stopped, I sprayed it with WD40 and it has been working for like two years, but it stopped again like two months ago. It's clear that dust gets there and that isn't good. Then I cleaned it all spraying it with IPA and I didn't add any oil, and now it's working perfect again, at least these last three months.
