Welcome to part 4 of my Trash to Treasure Amiga series. The episode that was never meant to be, but the British weather delayed us from finishing in part 3. Thanks to the help of a UV light I finished up the retrobriting and here's the final result, as well as some memories I have from using the system. Enjoy.
● Corrections
Turrican 2 in the final montage is the PC version, oops! This will be rectified when I release the series in a single video.

I will be eternally grateful to the Amiga, for helping me get through an unbearably bad time in 1994 when I tragically lost my younger brother through suicide. If it wasn't for the distraction of games like cannon fodder and lemmings,I think I may well have gone the same way. I still treasure my Amiga 600,and every now and then I get it out of its original pristine box and fire up a few bygone classics. I still enjoy playing modern games, but a lot of the soul has gone out of them now. I have really enjoyed watching the progress of you bringing this Amiga 500 back to life. Thanks.

He was a great guy,and everyone loved him,but he had his demons. I feel your loss also my friend, and I totally respect your dedication to the Games of a brilliant era. Brings back memories of waking up at 6am and going to the paper shop everyday after school to deliver the daily rags. The reason, to save up just under £600 for a brand new Amiga500. Literally blood sweat and tears went into getting that machine, but it was so worth and I was the first in my year to get one :) My friends followed suit shortly after, bloody copy cats!!

I worked for HP and got an A500 from an old HP engineer who was getting out of the game. It had a hard disk expansion, video out & in, audio out & in, and lots of graphics/audio/video floppies; I was in heaven!.. HP used to let employees take hard drives home if they couldn't sell them, so I had a 2GB disk on an A500 in 1994 - that was MASSIVE for the day. That was the beginning of my 3D fascination.

Beautiful restoration! My first experience with Amiga was in 1992. Six middle school students in my city were selected to work on a video animation project for the department of energy, illustrating the use of colloid to remove radioactive isotopes from ground water. We worked in an Amiga lab with five Amiga 2000s and a 3000T. One of the 2000s and the 3000T had Video Toaster boards installed. All included Deluxe Paint IV. The project and that lab were part of what inspired me to make computers my career. My own Amiga, a 4000D re housed in a tower case, is sadly not functional anymore.

She turned out beautiful. The difference is astonishing, and I imagine worth every second spent on the restoration. My dad had an Amiga 500 back in the day, as a kid I loved it. I remember having a blast on the Amiga Format cover disk of First Samurai. As a kid I think a lot of us were easily pleased as I spent hours replaying demos.

The Amiga 500 was my first introduction to personal computing and gaming. I remember being three years old and playing Bubble Bobble as well as other titles with my father during frigid winters when it was too cold to play outside. I remember my uncle who supplied us with so many games that I couldn't even begin to start rattling off some of the titles and I don't think in all of the years we owned our A500 that I ever got around to playing every one of them. I remember when our first Windows 95 PC made it into the home, setting up the A500 in my room to play on when the Windows PC was in use. I also remember boxing the old girl up when my parents divorced and I no longer had the room available to set her up and continue to give her the love and attention she deserved. I remember one day asking my mother what had happened to the old A500 and her telling me she brought it to Goodwill because it was not being used. I remember the frustration and sadness I felt that such a significant piece of my childhood no longer was in my life and there was no way to get her back, at least, not like there was before. At 31 years old, as a software engineer who lives and breathes everything computing related, I will never forget my first love when it comes to computers. Thank you for taking me through this restoration project of yours, you brought back many happy memories :)

+Reddy Aimfire thank you for sharing that and for watching. I feel your pain. I remember coming home one day to find about 90 issues of Amiga format dating back to issue 1 had been taken to the tip by my parents because they were just old magazines. My introduction was the A500 as well. I was in a mall with my brother. We were both into electronic games at the time and were walking into a Software Etc (Remember those?) and they had the A500 on display running a slideshow demo. The pictures were only in 32 colors but at that time, that might as well had been all the colors in the world in computing terms. Well, I saw that demo and my jaw just dropped. I went to the attendant and told them that I wanted one of those. He took my order and told me it would be in in a week. A week went by and I got the call that it was in. My brother and I hurriedly went down to the store and picked it up. We also picked up 3 programs for it. Got a submarine game that I don't really recall the name %100 but I think it was Silent Service. Also got Defenders of the Realm and I think the third one was Empire. A precursor to Civilization. My brother and I were hooked since then. I later on moved on to Deluxe Music and Art and experimented with Turbo Silver (Though I do remember using it's precursor Turbo but I think I got that off of a demo disk).

Incredible story! I wish my memory went back far enough to remember when we first purchased our A500, and how it came to be. Sadly, since I was quite young I only remember going into a few software stores with my dad to snap up some titles, the only one I remember with any vividness at all is picking up Action Fighter from a mom & pop type store with green shag carpet and bins full of software, new and used. Good stuff :)

Man, I can still remember going to our local Mall that had a computer store upstairs. They'd always have the latest computers lined up and plugged in on the display and I can still remember the first time I saw the Amiga 500. I was just blown away with the color and graphics! My mom had to drag me out of the store! I was still playing on an old Commodore 64 so seeing games on that beast was mind blowing for me as a kid! Good stuff, I'm sooo jealous. I never got to play on an Amiga 500 and it's something I'm dying to try even after all of these years. Thanks for a great video series!!

Well holy hell! You won't believe this, but as someone who experienced the dawn of home computing in the 80's when I was early 20's (work it out) I had never heard of this channel!! In fact it's only because I stumbled across the Retro Hour podcast and subsequently heard your interview after going back through them, that I finally woke up after decades of disappearing into the boring, modern IT world and realised what I'd been missing. I miss the days when there were countless machines, all vying for top dog status, but unfortunately Microsoft and IBM collaborated to take all the fun out of it. I know this is an old vid, but omg, you have done a wonderful job with these videos. Well shot, backed up by an articulate, engaging and intelligent guy. I have my Amiga 500 in the loft. And yes, I am inspired. Top work fella - really good stuff. Thanks for doing all these. I'm most definitely going to spread the word.

Winuae is a very decent emulator to set one up on your pc, it even lets you enable emulated drive sounds. Most games and apps are considered abandonware for all intents and purposes and just a google away, getting the kickstart rom is a bit of a hassle and you'd have to own an amiga to technically be legal, but it's so long ago. You can find the kickstart roms online. It's not a substitute for the real machine but it makes me regret selling my amiga 500 all those years ago a little less.

InnSewerAnts, I used WinUAE for years but FS-UAE is worlds better, so much easier to setup and like a ZX Spectrum emulator it connects to a database of abandonware Amiga games and lets even a first time user just load it up, click on a game and it downloads and plays. Never looked back at WinUAE after I discovered FS-UAE

It was the first time you could play games at home as if you were in an arcade, a dream come true for many of us I'm sure. Remember Silkworm? It was just like the arcade version. Everything was so hands on too, learning to use the CLI, installing libraries, configuring everything. Looking forward to each month's Amiga Format! I couldn't afford a proper monitor, so I used to connect it to my Sanyo 14" colour TV via composite video (I still have it and it still works perfectly!) My girlfriend was always moaning, because it was the only TV! I did manage to upgrade the RAM and so could also flash other more modern ROMs via the expansion. Later on there was the harddisk expansion through the side Zorro port (think that was the name) and also a CDROM drive. I had to sell it when I bought my A1200 which I still have. Lots of great memories.

+mick2d2 the anticipation for Amiga Format, good times. Silkworm is in the montage as one of my favourite games. Loved that.

I've been hanging for the final video of this Amiga restoration project for a week. Great work, you've done a great job on this machine. I used to live in the UK as a kid (now Australia). Back then we couldn't afford an Amiga or even a Commodore 64. Myself and my younger brother shared a Commodore 16 - which was just about the most basic thing on earth! Back then we thought the Amiga 512 was going to be the most advance gaming system of our lifetimes lol. Strange to think Commodore are not still a big player in the gaming industry, I still love the Music from those games 30'years later.

Recently found an A600, an A1200 and a ZX Spectrum +2 in my mum's loft. Basically I found my whole childhood inside a dust-caked tea chest under a hundred issues of Amiga Power, Crash and Sinclair User, I have so far got the A600 cleaned up and working on a modern TV but I need to find a 'ye olde telly' for the Spectrum. Also not holding out much hope of the tape deck working.

What a great result! Congratulations! Everything on the Amiga was cool, even the crappiest demos or office applications. Civilization made me and my neighbour sweat in my overheated bedroom, caused by the warm power supply running for hours and hours. And than the Guru Meditation appeared... ;)

Thank you RetroManCave, your series of the restoration of a A500 has proven invaluably useful to me, as I have a a500 to (and in working order 'mostly') but as I was unaware how to resolve some of the more technical issues hardware related, my restoration project has been on hiatus for a good decade or there about. So a very big thank you for your well detail and easy to understand routine and hands on footage.

Seeing Silkworm brought back so many memories. It's the first Amiga game that I remember playing but sadly the floppy disk stopped working a long time ago. I cannot wait for your sd card adapter thingy review because I was thinking about buying one! Great videos! Keep it up!

I’ll always have fond memories of my Amiga, first computer I ever had aged 8. My parents wouldn’t let me have a console because they wanted me to do more than just play games (which was all I did!) apart from using the speech programme to make my Amiga say rude things!! Was in daily use until the PlayStation came out.
