Delighted to be a part of this video Neil so very grateful for you chatting to me! So, let's just recline into something I feel is missed that Neil rightly feels at the end of this video. Is your 1992 Amiga meant to be your 2020 PC? No. Is it meant to be so fast you can open a JPEG in seconds, I'd argue, no. What it's meant to be is a portal to your younger self, a time of naivety , joy and just sheer fun. I honestly feel the Amiga 600 with no too much money spent on it is your portal. It's 68000 may seem slow to start with, but spend time with it and you'l be charmed. It can do so much. For me, it's being able to sit back and see it beam back to me my memories of the past, feel warm, but also critically know, it is making new memories that keep the present relevant. The Amiga 600 is in my book, the best Amiga you can own in 2020 for not a great deal of your spondulix,

Half the fun of that game was going in blind and trying out the various locations. Like the wizard's tower top right that was seemingly completely random in how the wizard would react to your visit (far too often just turning you into a toad and thus costing you a life). I think i may have faced the dragon once, and was woefully unprepared for what i was up against.

@@digiowl9599 Absolutely, it’s partly why I love it, you don’t know if what to expect. Although, the more you play; the more you learn. The dragon...yeah, never speak of it. The charred remains of my Knight is still smouldering in pixels. I’d love to see a HD remake of it 😁

I came late to the Amiga party as when I was young could never justify the cost of an Amiga and went with the cheaper Atari 520 STFM but always wanted an Amiga. Now that I have a 500, 600 and 1200 I think the 1200 is the best as it has the advantages you identified with the 600 in having PCMCIA and an IDE port which means you can run your games from the hard drive and do away with problematic floppy disks. Also the PCMCIA makes it easy to transfer files to and from the PC which is so much better. If however you don't have a lot of room the A600 is a great space saver. Great video series Neil and looking forward to seeing the move to the new RMC headquarters!

The a1200 was an amazing machine got my from launch in 1992. Pity it was not well suported, in theory it could have had better looking games then snes, if developers would focus in dedicated a1200 hardware and features.

As someone who came from an Atari STe to the A600, it was magic. So much less desk space, much more powerful and a HDD! I can totally understand how saddening it was for someone who was already in the ecosystem though and just wanted a next generation Amiga but didn't get one until far too late.

Speedball 2, Moonstones, Wings all great. You don't have to restart Wings if you die, your new pilot can take over the journal and you can start from where you died. It may take many pilots because some idiot flies into you, but you can work your way through the war and complete using many pilots.

With BestWB installed on Kickstart 3.1.4, the PCMCIA slot doesn't conflict with my 8MB RAM; I think it's the driver in BestWB that fixes that. Also, you can get a usb keyboard adapter on ebay that clips over the keyboard controller chip; this works well with a USB numeric keypad to provide the keys you need for flight simulators and such, and it doesn't interfere with the built-in keyboard, so you can get by with just the keypad plugged in when you need it.

I really enjoyed this series. Having never owned an Amiga myself (I had an Atari STE!), I always thought an A600 was an upgrade to the A500. A lot of my friends had an A600 tho, and loved it. Of course, we all had the Atari vs Amiga arguments, and I'm glad to see that topic got included in this video. 😁 Thanks again for making this mini series, it's making me think about recapping an Atari STE I bought a while back but have hardly used.

I thought he'd already moved and just done a great job making the cave look the same. 😂, Now I'm really looking forward to seeing the new cave. I started with an Amiga 2000, I bought my little sisters an Amiga 600 at a Commodore Amiga show in Melbourne, it must have been around 1993 for I think $699 AU... For a 14 and 10 year old girls they loved it, especially James Pond. I eventually moved to an Amiga 4000/030 later updated with a Cyberstorm accelerator with the 060/PPC 604E? (I 🤔 think and which cost more than the Amiga 4000), a Cybervision 64 graphic card...... AAAAAAND, embarrassingly a genuine EMPLANT card that cost $999 AU and wasn't even as good as SHAPESHIFTER 😂... And all I did was play games... I gave it all to a friend who never appreciated it, but I'd trade it all in to be back in 1984 with my first computer... My beloved Amstrad CPC 464 with GREEN SCREEN when everything was new and EXCITING.... Who doesn't miss those days.

My current A600 is almost identically upgraded. Upgraded enough to make it useful without all the complications of a bigger upgrade such as my amiga600.net project many years ago. Worst thing about the A600 is how the case clips break so easily. I have fitted enhanced ones to my machine now to make it more robust. Best thing is the form factor. Great backpack machine for visiting demoparties (imagine GOING to a demo party in the current global situation) when you are working on a project that doesn't require AGA.

That’s a great CRT. We had that same Sony set as the second tv downstairs back in the day at my parents. My Dad wouldn’t let me play games on it though. I had to make do with a white Ferguson tv with 8 channels on the side & no remote. Occasionally I had to give it a bash Onslo style to get the picture straight. It had character, I think that’s what you call it.

Exactly my thoughts. A nice toggle switch around the back of the machine. Some WHDLoad games need more than the 4-ish Mb. I can’t do that as I have an original expansion, so the only way of switching to 8Mb is to swap the SIMM 😂

I wish I'd seen that PCMCIA->SD usage a couple of weeks ago, as I would have mentioned it in an article I just wrote! As someone who doesn't actually own an Amiga, but has always wanted one, that PCMCIA slot is now too hard to ignore. It may not have been a good idea at the time, but it was the perfect expansion for the future of the machine. You may not like it, but I'd actually buy a 600 these days over other models!

Hi, I am lucky enough to own a 1200 with a hard drive and 030 accelerator from back in the day. Didn't realise they are getting prohibitively expensive! Tbh it is only worth grabbing a 1200 if you want to explore the rather esoteric 32-bit side of Amiga gaming, which is a kind of Aladdin's cave of unfulfilled potential. Most of the classic games are all playable on the stock 500/500+/600 machines, though. If you are only interested in the games it might be worth looking for a CD32; they are quite accessible and you tend to get the better versions of the 32-bit games... but you need to find a good controller as the native CD32 controller is awful...

As a former A600 owner, I've got nothing but love for it. Completely agree with Neil and Pixel Vixen's assessments that for A500 owners it wasn't what they wanted (they were probably expecting something more like the A1200) but for newcomers it gave us the same feels as the A500 had for others. Would love the same setup that Neil has built, but I'm all about convenience, so I'm a dirty emulator 😀

Yeah for the time it was perhaps not seen as enough to warrant a +100 on the name, but as you demonstrate the changes that were done made it more future proof. Also, Moonstone, now that's a game i have not thought about in ages. I recall the opening kinda freaked me back in the day but the gameplay was engrossing if flagrantly gore filled. The combat also suffered from much the same complaint as with Body Blows, in that it relied on a single button and stick movements to do everything. So you kinda had to be tactical rather than rely on reflexes.

Body Blows was on DOS too and I thought it played alright, it's a good example of why Commodore needed to launch the Amiga with a new controller, the stock joystick pinout supports at least two buttons like the SMS and 7800, that BB could have at least had Punch & Kick as separate buttons. Really somebody needed to push this aspect in hindsight Re. one-button controllers in an age that was up to six buttons, that's beyond outdated. It's weird to think the NES used multiplexing chips in it's gamepads by 1983 but so many platforms never did. O_o???

Wings was\is a quality game. We loved it. Fortunately it's in my GOG collection ( obviously ) Might need to dig this one out...

Hi Neil What WHDLoad version/revision of chaos engine did you use? That might be the issue.

Great to see Chaos Engine getting an airing, maybe my favourite because of memories of playing it with my dad :) I wonder if anyone remembers a game called K-240?

X-Bench is also a nice whdload game launcher. I use it on my Checkmate A1200. The nicest thing is by pressing the help key it will pick a random game out of my entire library of whdload's. Sometimes you find a bit of a hidden gem this way. You can also do the same with all the whdloaded demos.

Seems like I was right then, some 20 odd years ago. I was trying to choose between the 500+ and the 600. Ended up with the latter, and has a lot of fun with it over the years.

I use to be a dealer for the 600. It was a cost reduced 500 with a chipset that was already obsolete on the Amiga line. It was certainly not what the market wanted at the time.

Commodore certainly had a thing for constantly releasing new iterations of computers based on old hardware.

RMC, I really love your KZfaq channel! Going through the history of every classic kit while rebuilding it, is a fantastic idea. I was wondering if that TRS-80 Model 100 you have on your shelf has been already rebuild? And if not, are you planning on doing an episode on it? That kit was *the one* computer I dreamed of having when I was a kid, but I could never afford it, at the time. I would love it if you did an episode on it!

Thank you, the amazing thing about that TRS 80 100 is that I found it in a bin...and it's really one of the machines that encouraged me to make the channel....just because I found it. I haven't actually covered it on the channel though so it really does deserve to have an episode and for me to share its story. Great idea, thank you Chris
