About 15 years ago, the Mennonites came to our area and I was happy because they bought farms that had gone under in the last few years. About 8 years ago, around 100 young Amish families arrived and bought farms that hadn’t been occupied in decades. This has been a blessing to our dying valley! Lumber, dairy products, vegetables and baked goods, cabinets and furniture, metal work and even window manufacturing. And quality labor if you need a job done. Mennonites and Amish do pay taxes like the rest of us, which a few people here had a misconception about. They just don’t pay into Social Security because they will never need it; their families and community take care of their elders. Which reminds me, they provide home care for outsiders too. SHTF or not, I’m glad they’re here. Great video! Thank you!

Over the last year, I've watched many of the Mennonite channels, particularly the ones geared to women and homemaking. I've learned so much about canning; terrific recipes that are inexpensive; how to make your own cleaning products and so much more. We live in the city but we can still benefit from their knowledge.

V. 1954 hi there! I’d like to suggest my favorite recipe book called The Mennonite Community Cookbook. The one I have belonged to my great grandmother, but they still print them. They even have the same cover. The desserts are particularly yummy. My grandmother’s favorite was funny cake(it looks like a pie), and mine is apple crisp(no oatmeal).

My wife and I both transport for the amish and deal with the amish community as a whole on a daily basis. We too are off-grid and have earned the mutual respect from them over the last 7yrs and have been accepted into their world of various traditions. On many occasions have broken bread with them and on multiple day transports have slept under the same roof. The amish are a very humble people. We have built a trust with them that has taken many years to develop. All they want is to be treated with respect. It's really not that hard to do and they will teach you things that you would never think possible could be done. Remember the amish have been living like this for many decades. Great People.

A local Amish store got robbed. At least that was what this man thought when he walked into a store with a gun. The owner came up with a cordless saw. The crook decided to leave and the store owners wife went after the guy and grabbed the gun away from him. Some others jumped on him and held him there til the cops came. I could not believe how the woman just grabbed the gun away. When their families are threatened they will step up their gams.

I read that in the coming era of peace, which is scriptural, we will be living like the Amish, only as Catholics. True Roman Catholics not those who departed in thought, word, and deed. But those who believe ALL Christ taught, which is the meaning of Catholic, "whole." Few are left like that. Jesus said it pleases the father to give the kingdom to that little flock, "remnant." Electricity is not a bad thing in and of itself, but whatever makes people forget God, is. I once heard that Mother Teresa refused modern plumbing, because if people had to haul their own water, they would value the resource and not waste it. Modernization can do that to people. The BABLE thing . SELF-reliance. That is the real evil. Not thanking God for it all. Otherwise these are just objects, and in and of themselves are not evil. Jesus said we have to eat his body and drink his blood to have life in us. This is the center of the Catholic faith. The reason people stay. After God cleanses the world of Man- centeredness, and shows us who we are really dependent on, again, eating HIS flesh and blood, which makes us one body of believers, yes, I believe we will all go back to the simple life, similar to the Amish. But as one flock, with one shepherd, Jesus. He is not divided in his teaching, into several different faiths. He said he built one church, on Peter the rock. Said nothing would destroy it because he would always be with it. This divine aspect remains, but the man part is sinful, as all men are sinners. Jesus knows this, but built the church on Peter, anyway. Because the church is not dependent on man, but God. Making Jesus the wise builder he spoke of. He is the ultimate foundation stone of his church. It will never crumble. But can be diminished by man's choices. Read what Pope Benedict once prophecied about the church becoming small, again. Soon we'll all become like the cute and cuddly Amish, one woman phrased them. I am looking forward to Jesus' cleansing of all evil. The Amish are sinners too, and Jesus died for them as well. Somewhere in their history they broke from the church. Christ will bring them back. He said be in the world, but not, of the world, and this is the real attraction of the Amish. This is why the Vatican is a city set apart. But the freemason's have worked their way in, and now it needs great cleansing. Many bishops are freemasons, and communists. Divide and conquer is the devil's strategy. Divide the church, divide the world! Jesus is allowing all the purging of evil everywhere. You WILL see a cleansed church, and a cleansed world. Wait for it. Prepare for it! Yes, do take tips from the Amish, and others, as Holy Spirit inspires. A little different for everyone, since all our missions are uniquely designed, by God. Any questions? Ask. Otherwise, have a beautiful and blessed day. Important to bless one another. Not curse each other.

@@cherylT321 Nope. He doesn't appreciate anything as one side of his family caters to his wants. He thinks people are stupid for living off the land when you can just call someone else to provide for you. I grew up poor. Hand me downs, living off of beans and rice and other home grown foods. My playtime was spent outside, mowing the yard, chopping firewood or helping my dad repair things. Our air conditioning was fans in the windows and the heat was either a wood stove or gas heater. If the power went out, no one freaked out. It wasn't the end of the world. My son's mom was born with a silver spoon in her mouth. Pampered and catered too. Her side continued the tradition for their grandson. He refuses hand me downs, living off grid or learning to survive off grid. When the power goes out or if he loses wifi, it's the end of the world for him. I sit back laughing. He is 15 now and thinks life will be full of luxury, even though he is now failing in school. I told him his future is at McDonald's. His mommie and grand parents won't be around forever. I told him he will need to learn to tie his own shoes one day. My grand mom was a full blooded native american that grew up on a reserve. I learnt a lot from her. I was 8 when she died. To this day, I still remember everything she taught me almost 40 years ago. Her house didn't have electricity or city water. If you wanted a bath, then you hauled in your own water. Every room had oil lamps. Those were the fun times. I don't give my son respect because he doesn't show respect. His ways have lead to A LOT of family issues. I'm the type that thinks "just because you can, doesn't mean that you should". He needs to live the part to understand and respect those who are less fortunate. In my opinion, he is scum!

@@cherylT321 Thanks. Knowledge is power. I'm a jack of all trades for a reason. I don't want to depend on anyone. I try to teach both my son and wife some life skills, but neither one are having it. It's sad. I'm all the time pointing out things to both, saying hmmmm just imagine if YOU knew how to fix that, which would save YOU money, not to mention you get to learn something. Example. My wife bought a self propelled push mower to use for tight areas around the house. She used it 1 time only, then put it in the garage. It sat for a year. She got it out a couple of weeks ago and it wouldn't start. I already knew what the issue was, but she took it to a shop. $60 thrown out the window. I told her the gas that sat in it for a year had clogged up the jets in the carb and a simple cleaning would fix it. She said that is what this shop done. I took her to the mower and showed her how easy it is to do that. She didn't have the time to do it or wait for me to get home from work to fix it. I told her for now on, I will not fix anything of hers unless she is with me watching and learning. I understand that she just wants things to work, but i'm all about stretching that dollar to its fullest and I love learning new things. I love knowing how things work. I'm not hating on her for her ways, I just want to open her eyes up as well as her son's eyes to other ways to better themselves, to be prepared, to overcome situations. Neither one of them know how to fish or hunt or to even prepare freshly caught fish or wild animals. Every year, I take her to a Pow Wow which is a Native American event that sheds light into their culture. She is amazed with it while she is watching, but that goes out the door once we leave the event.

I said nope, you can stick with your other half as I don't need nor want the added burden of having to carry your weight. I took him camping once, he didn't make it thru the night. Only after everyone in thier community is taken care of, then they go outside thier community to help others. Or to sell goods. We Americans as a nation, need to do this. Take care of our own FIRST. And then go outside our borders and help others. Only then, will America be America again.

I agree with you brother whole hartedly, the problem with our American culture is that the vast majority don't think in preparing as a community with like minded people to ban together and help each other in a SHTF situation, our culture is much more like preparing only for (me and mine family mentality). Just try in your church get other families to agree together to sell their big city homes and buy rural farmland with the intention to operate as a community like the Amish do. They will likely not agree to do that, but instead just to prepare for their own families survival. In my church I'm sad to say that it's not a (watchman on the wall church) which means the leadership doesn't keep up to (Bible prophecy as related to current events) and keep the congregation aware and up to date with these (Very Important Things), the end result in not doing this is they are caught off guard and unprepared like a thief in the night by the (great reset) and the (scamdemic) of this virus outbreak to circumvent the sovereignty of nations and constitutional laws under the guise of (health and safety) to deceive by fear to get everyone vaccinated which (Will) lead to the (Mark of the Beast). Rather they believe that they will be rapture up any second or before any thing bad happens like a SHTF situation. They don't realize that we are already in the first seal of Revelation 6, the rider on the white horse with a (bow = cheapest fabric) and a (crown = corona = 666) the number of his name (Lucifer = Lucifer race) which is the mark of the beast (the quantum tattoo) = proof of vaccination so that you can work, buy and sell when it comes to full enforcement very soon. I lived in an area with a lot of Amish communities. They were very shy, polite, and extremely industrious people. From fish ponds to furniture, quilts, honey, maple syrup, noodles, everything was high quality and handmade. I used to love going to the farms to shop. No Sunday sales! I always tried to dress extra modestly on those trips. I saw a little boy driving a team that was hauling hay bales into a loft. He appeared to be about 6.

I live among and have some close friendships with Amish in central Pennsylvania. The farms near me all have wells dependent on gasoline powered pumps to deliver the water. Windmills for water supply have been disconnected, and I seldom see hand pumps for water. An Amish minister explained to me that they now have so many animals that windmills wouldn't be able to supply enough water for the farm's needs. I asked him what he would do if he ran out of gasoline and the "English" had a power outage. He said he'd just go up to the local gas station. He seemed unaware that the gas station required electricity to pump the gas. I suggested that he and his friends might want to think about what they would do for water. They also use generators to power their milking machines, although they do know how to milk by hand. It's just that some of them have large herds of cows now. Also, due to their population increase, quite a few just have small properties of a few acres with enough pasture for their horses because there are fewer big farms to purchase, and they've turned to jobs in construction rather than farming for income. Interestingly, some of them around here are starting to use solar panels on the roofs of their barns and homes, mostly to power their freezers. They do a lot of canning but they also freeze many of their meats and vegetables. They are less self-sufficient than they were 50-100 years ago but if the grid went down, they'd band together and make things work out. They are a good, hard working people.

While I'm no longer Amish, I still keep close ties with my family, and community. As for your statements on self defense with the Amish. You're correct. It will vary from one community to another on their exercises of self defense measures. For example. The Amish community my Uncle is a part of in Wisconsin, would never think of using firearms for self defense. Their code of order is way more strict than the one in my area(north central Indiana). Now in my area, there's a lot of Amish that have handgun permits. As for my brother(no longer Amish either), and I, we're into the non hunting firearms(tacticool) as well. Just weekend, I decided to snoop around on my brother's open laptop, and see what KZfaq subscriptions he has. He, like myself, is also subscribed to your firearm channel. As for the off grid thing, that's on the top of my list of priorities. They don't realize that we are already in the first seal of Revelation 6, the rider on the white horse with a (bow = cheapest fabric) and a (crown = corona = 666) the number of his name (Lucifer = Lucifer rase) which is the mark of the beast (the quantum tattoo) = proof of vaccination so that you can work, buy and sell when it comes to full enforcement very soon. Other than security( which is minimal) they are the ultimate package preppers. Learning from them is a very smart idea.

Desiel or kerosene, easy to replace with waste veggie oil. There are simple methods to process the oil so it will not clog up your engine or lamps and it is easy to do. Cooking with wood is easy once you figure out just how much heat you actually need and thus the size and amount of wood needed for that which you are cooking. Outdoor cooking can be done with a rocket stove and even canning. And, with canning, having teh right size woods to use means you can get to and maintain a desired pressure easy. It is just something you are not going to walk away from and must keep an eye on that pressure gauge. Water, augering a hole even for ground water is pretty easy. The "T" handled post hole auger is great for this and if you get hold of steel gasline pipe for house gaslines, they can be added as you go deeper and once you hit water (most likely it is ground water as opposed to aquafur which is much deeper and thus needs to be filtered), go down another 3 ft and then run six inch pvc or steel sewer pipe down before you run down your water draw pipe. And get those freeze free hand pumps. Sure, it means a bit of pumping to get the water up, but once you stop, the water goes back down so your pipes do not freeze and burst.

As to hand powered woodworking: I recommend the Japanese hand saws called “Dozuki” or “Riobi” saws. They work on the pull, vs the western saws that work by pushing. They are easy to use, incredibly accurate, and affordable. A cheap version can be had at Lowe’s for $20.

Love the Amish. My farm was next to 2 other Amish farms and they are the nicest people. I could not do it, due to horrible medical/dental practices and no self defense. Other than that, I agree with everything they believe. You are not baptized into the faith until you are an adult and given time in the outside world to make your decision, so that seems fair. On a side note, I used to go to Walmart Walmart them and even took one of the women to a hospital when she thought she had a miscarriage (she had internal bleeding, as an EMT, I knew she was going to die without treatment). They trusted me enough to take her to the hospital because I said she would die without some simple medical treatment. They also had some generators and diesel tractors. So maybe not as strict there in Dover, DE?

Shoot, there are things you can learn from these communities to just save some money. A good portion of this I learned from my grandparents who had to learn it during the depression and WW II. And yes, that included using a working horse and how to care for that horse, using hand tools for most repairs and some building, canning & preserving, etc…. As far as communities go, you don’t need to have similar beliefs. It can be as simple as living close to each other in a neighborhood, apartment complex, or city/town. My neighbors and I all have different political and religious beliefs, but when a hurricane hits, it doesn’t matter. We all help each other out.

Wow! Wish I could find a community like this to join. At 61, disabled and on SSI, renting a house with one of my sons and his 2 and 6 year old daughters, it's not possible to buy land in NC where I live. None of my 3 sons have wives who want to move off grid, but I've seen the need and wanted to for several years. I was raised on a small family farm, know what hard work is even though my body won't work like that any more. Have some heirloom seeds and "stuff" to get a decent start for my own well being, but no land and no help with the physical stuff of getting set up. A group of like minded, aging, disabled people with varied knowledge, skills and supplies would be great.

Scooters and skates not bicycles. They hire drivers and take buses. The bus is exclusively Amish groups. They use propane for indoor lights and refrigerator. They aren't allowed to have freezers so they have group freezers. A reefer with a freezer within several miles. Phones are in outbuildings. Propane powers big fans. Air drives indoor fans. They power their well with air. They also have large battery supplies for flashlights. These are like Dewalt and other tools. They use power converters to run just about anything that plugs in. They don't spend money on beer or alcohol, their crutch is icecream. Propane stoves. Coal heaters are preferred over wood. They have big tanks for diesel, usually misspelled desel, lol. They are very friendly. My Amish friends I have warned about Islam. If they come to your door, DO NOT LET THEM IN. Within the sects there are those that are very strict others are more liberated. There's a phone called black box. It's like a cell but it comes in a black case. Building is communal. You help me I will help you. Barn raisings and house raising are called frolics. Makes it sound like fun. The women gather and make food to feed all the volunteers. Auctions are social events as well as cow selling and buying. They use words like challenging for problems. Their attitude is always positive. The boys get to the 8th grade the girls go till they are 16. They don't get science. My friend never heard of a volcano, when he injured his finger with a pressure washer, he didn't know the word amputate. They don't use any devices they consider special. Basic safety is respected but if the fan in the silo doesn't clear out all the silo gas, well, they get hurt. They won't use personal oxygen unless the doctor says to. Injuries are very common. Deadly accidents happen. The team runs away and the drives is thrown and dies. The mule gets stung by a bee and the young man tries to jump on, misses and is run over by the steel wheels. The young man is caught by the auger sending corn into the silo and he is pulled in. Not a pretty sight. The women are usually always pregnant, they call menstruating wasting. They don't fill their homes with stuff. They are open and free of clutter. Saturday's chores include raking the driveway and putting all signs of work away. The only work done on Sunday is feeding and milking. They won't even take out the trash on a Sunday. They have lots of rules to order their lives. Do t ask an Amishman about a woman's pregnancy, they won't answer you. Only the women speak of this between themselves. Sometimes I wish I was born Amish. Their order for children is exceptional. They don't speak English until they go to school. They are called scholars while going to school. After graduation the boys start work on the farm, the girls start in the home, maybe taking over the laundry. Done daily their washers do t spin dry. The wash hits the line dripping wet. Maybe this is the reason it's done at the crack of dawn. Scholars gather to visit. Once out of school they gather for "sings". Play volleyball, visit, and start thinking about marriage or rumspringe. Once they decide to remain Amish they are baptized.

Thank you for all that info. We could learn so much from them. I remember when Sundays were sacred in the 50s. No work. No stores were open. It was devoted to church and family and extra fine meals where my mother brought out her special dinnerware and ironed linen napkins. We played games with our parents and with neighbors till sundown. Rarely did we leave the house unless it was to visit relatives and pay our respects to the elders.

I agree that the Amish and other farm communities that are self sustaining, must be protected/supported in a crisis situation. They are the people who can teach the outlying communities how to survive. They have the skills that can be taught. Our country has the capability to turn around and go back to the lifestyle of our great grandparents. WORK should not be considered a bad four letter word. My grandparent's family were Vermont and New Hampshire farmers and woods men. They passed these traditions and skills down to us. We have returned to form a working family farm again, that serves us well. Unfortunately we will all be over 70 in 2020. Our children do not want to farm. The farm has kept us solvent and healthy. Be brave and look up what the % of WORKING FAMILY FARMS is in the USA in 2019. It will make you shake your head in disbelief. We are proud to be part of the very small percentage! I believe is is less than 1%...
