This is part 6 of a 6 part video series explaining how I installed a metal roof on my house. In this part i cover installing vented foam closures and the ridge cap, installing solid foam closures and the endwall trim.
The metal I'm using is called "crinkle black"
I purchased all my materials at buckeyemetalro...
They are a local company. Google "metal roofing supplier" to find one in your area.
The buble-wrap underlayment I used is Rfoil 2500. It can be found here rfoil.com/insu...
The dektite roof boot can be found here www.ebay.com/i...
The Fabral vented foam closure can be found here www.homedepot....

Over 30 years roofing for me. Your thorough, professional and dead on. Great project choice for your excellent edumentary. Yeah, I made the word "edumentary" up, but I am a New Yorker. Everyone knows; that's how we roll. You are "one of the best" without a doubt. Beautiful job, "respect", thanks for sharing. Your pride in yourself and your work is rare and exemplary.

As an avid DIYer I have been looking for a good video on how to instal a metal roof that doesn't look like I did it myself! This is the best hands on install instruction I have come across! You don't rush thru anything and you take the time to explain why you do the little things that make a difference. As the saying goes, anything worth doing is worth doing right! I will surely re-watch these videos before doing my roof over! Thank you and God Bless! And thanks to your wife for lending a hand, many can't be bothered and I appreciate her for that!

If you used 1x4 strips instead on the bubble wrap, would everything basically work just the same?

Yea, pretty much. Although I would still install a vapor barrier on top of the 1x4’s before installing metal.

It is very obvious that you put a great deal of thought and effort into making your videos. You produced a well edited finished product to post on KZfaq. This is how youtube videos should be done. They are a pleasure to watch. Coincidentally, I am having a new metal roof put on my house right now and your video gave me a great deal of confidence that I did manage to hire a very professional company to do the job. Sometimes I will watch videos not from a DIY perspective but just to know what a professional job should look like as it moves along. Really nice job with these videos.

I wanted to say I’ve seen a ton of videos due to the fact that I recently bought 25 panels of galvanized sheets(3x17)and 33 painted panels of wall siding I’m gonna use some on my 33x15 warehouse and some on my 55x32 double wide mobile home (while we went to Tennessee to visit family we haven’t seen in yrs someone vandalized my home severely busting my skylight as well as basically anything they could destroy)so it’s taken me yrs just to get my head wrapped around the scope of work I’ve got to do now staying with my mother(myself and 3 kids)I’m a single father and when people offer to help it’s never the right day or time etc so I’m one man doing so many projects I cannot keep track and very overwhelmed tbh,But you are the only person on KZfaq that makes videos that act show how this is done in a way that is understandable for a guy who’s quite honestly a little nervous about doing such a project I do not have enough money to pay a company to come install this material that I purchased for a great price I know it’s far too much information but I think it serves to at least show you how incredibly valuable what you’ve produced (in your videos)can give someone like me hope that I have a shot at making this a reality,I’m not even trying to blast of content makers on here just sayin that by comparison your videos took me from going My God I’ll never be able to do this,To thinking ok calm down and follow your instruction!!!So I guess I’m trying to say how much I appreciate not only your skill and commitment to the work you do but also the gratitude for how you explain and set an example that’s something someone with no knowledge of this can actually learn from and apply in hopes of having similar success!!!So wish me luck and Thank You for sharing something that means so very much in someone’s life that you’ve never even met!!!I hope all is well with you and your family!!!

Thankyou so much for all the knowledge I've gained through your 6 pt video series. I'm about to do a roof and was wanting to do it myself but was intimidated by doing metal roofing. Since watching your video I now feel confident on what I need to order and how it should properly be installed. The company you work for should buy your video series for a very handsome price and use it for a how to guide when selling to diy people.

I like these closures. One thing I don’t see on any of these videos is a sweeping of the roof or at least a leaf blower to remove metal shavings. My boss wouldn’t let us leave until we did that every day before leaving job to prevent rust, especially on a white roof.

I would have done a few things different such as folding over both edges of the ridge cap to strengthen the metal as well as to not leave a sharp unpainted edge exposed ,i was so happy to see proper panel attachment through the raised laps i began to laugh,99% of these video show hacks attaching the panels with screws directly through the panel which we know will soon leak like hell ,im a retired Journeyman Waterproofer/Tin Smith who installed thousands of SQs of panel roofs over my 32 years in Roofers Union ,you guys did a nice job and should be proud .
@MT_Homes
@MT_Homes 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Michael! Good suggestion on the ridge cap. Always nice to hear from a pro. As far as the screw location, you wouldn’t believe the amount of crap I got for screwing on the rib. Had no idea that many people screwed metal in the flat.
@michaelledford4751
@michaelledford4751 3 жыл бұрын
@@MT_Homes anybody who tells you its wrong to attach screws through the rib laps is NOT qualified to install any type panel roof system,due to thermal shock screws within the pans leak very quickly ,meanwhile fasteners correctly installed on top of the rib laps suffer less than 5% of the thermal shock aka expansion & contraction as fasteners in the pan ,because the entire panel must expand beyond the flexibility within the rib laps which are stronger due to being 2 layers of metal thick before fastener washer failure takes place . Moving on to loose or missing screws ,if even 1 screw installed inside the pan experiences washer failure due to being under or over driven,or loosened by expansion & contraction ,that lose washer will have over 100x the water flow as a loose washer ,or even a missing screw from the rib lap ,the roof pan is made to take 100% of the water flow ,not rib laps. Lastly all rib laps are made with a bottom side & top side ,the top side of all laps are designed to shed water to the sides of the lap ,even in a downpour very little water flow takes place on top of a rib,the system is designed for the pan itself to be the waterproofing of the structure,the standing seam version of metal panel roofs has no fasteners inside the pan,instead all fasteners are hidden clips that hold down the exposed lap by clipping over the exposed panel edge and attaching to the substrate ,the next panel installed uses its lap to close the seam and fold over to hide the fastening clips ,the whole premise of attaching through the rib lap is to expose the least amount of possible leak areas to water flow,rib lap fastening is the next best thing to installing a standing seam hidden fastener panel system ,anybody who gives you shit for proper fastening is a poorly trained shingle installer trying to be a tin Smith as your crew are ,for all homeowners ,look to this job for proper installation without the use of caulking ,done right a panel roof needs no caulking like shown here on this excellent quality roofing system that will outlast any pamel roof thats attached with screws in the pan by 15 to 20 years.

I would've given you 10 thumbs up if I could. #1 on the hit parade, kudos for a short introduction. Many of us that spend a lotta time watching youtube vids don't exactly enjoy long, time wasting and many a times tacky intros. Content is more important. I jumped through all the six vids just to pick what I most wanted to know and you get an A+ on that. #2 you pack all that content in every minute of your vids in a natural way, like effortlessly. Yes you are a natural. I'm going with same classic rib metal over my old shingle roof but as a 'buying time' measure because I'll have to replace in the future lotsa rotted deck and maybe more. But I'm going with 1x4's on the diagonal as an idea that I picked from Mat Risinger to allow ventilation all the way as I live in SoFlo. It does make screwing on a grid pattern impossible. But I'm learning to live with it. The other thing is I could not settle for the manufacturer's recommendation of screwing it down on the flat part or the ridge of the panel, as many other folk stand for in the blogs I read. For now I screwed the back of my roof on the flat and the front on the ridge of the panel... not a great idea I know, but am experimenting.

Best how to video I've seen on installing metal roofing. Lots of details that only come from experience. Question: I have a home in Colorado that can have 5 feet of snow on the existing asphalt shingle roof which creates ice dams. Any extra considerations for installing a metal roof in these conditions? I'll probably go with hidden fastener 16" snap panels.
@MT_Homes
@MT_Homes 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Wow, that’s a lot of snow! I don’t have any experience dealing with that much snow or ice dams but one thing I would recommend is snow guards to keep the snow from sliding off and taking your gutters with it. Some very heavy duty snow guards. I would talk to your local metal roof expert or your local metal supplier and see what their recommendations are. Good luck, and thanks for watching!
@daledo8604
@daledo8604 5 жыл бұрын
Some areas with high snow require an engineer to sign off on the design. Basically to make sure the roof panels are designed for the load. All manufactures will have allowable live loads which are usually presented in a table with roof panel gauge vs fastener spacing.

Thanks for let other people know this job. I do asphalt re-roofs and have a metal roof to do soon. With this videos I have much better knowledge thanks to you. Really appreciate what you do. Wonder how much to charge per sq? Im just charging for labor! The roof im doing is similar to the roof you did on your videos. Thanks and good job.
@MT_Homes
@MT_Homes 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Miguel! I never did charge by the square like you do with shingles so I really don’t know what it would come out to. The thing with metal is both the labor and material price can vary quite a bit if the roof has valleys, hips, sidewall, endwall, or dormers vs a flat roof. I always figured my materials then estimated my labor based on how long I thought it would take. I know it’s not the easiest way to do it but as you gain experience it gets easier. Thanks for watching!

You convinced me I could put a metal roof on my house. Thank you for the amazing videos. However, I can't find any GOOD video on the entire internet about how to install an exhaust vent on a metal roof. The video's on KZfaq are really bad. Hint...hint..... :)

Thank you! I do have a video on how to cut a hole and install a roof boot on a double wall furnace exhaust vent. Not sure if that helps. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m8-Urapomby4ZYk.html

very well narrated! very clear easily understandable instructions. i think asphalt roofing shingles should be a thing of the past. asphalt roofing shingles are labor intensive, crude and highly flammable. thanks for the videos !

Thank you! Amen to that! I haven’t done a shingle roof in at least 10 years.

Nice and neat. You mentioned an r value for bubble wrap , why would you want an R value under your steel when you have a vented attic?
@MT_Homes
@MT_Homes 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Thomas! On a 90 degree summer day the attic can reach temperatures of 150/160 degrees. Anything I can do to lower the attic temperature by installing a heat reflective and/or an insulated vapor barrier will save on energy bills.

Unbelievably good job explaining this project. I'm building my wife our 12x32 foot tiny home with a single pitch roof with eaves on all sides with a 4:12 pitch. Maybe you can direct me to a great explanation of how to vent this roof. Or better yet, how bout you make one :) Waiting patiently in Texas. Thank you.

Thanks Brian! Since your roof has no ridge like this one, best thing to do is to use vented soffit for the eaves on all 4 sides. If you plan on insulating the rafters, I would staple a continuous row of styrofoam baffles the entire length of the roof between each rafter before installing insulation. Hope this helps.

I just finished up with that job yesterday. Not totally happy but it's okay. I felt they were just a little bulky. And I didn't even tighten the screws down all the way

This is the most in depth how to I have ever seen for roof install. The only question is cost. How much did this cost in materials if you dont mind me asking. Thanks for the video.

Thank you. Altogether I had right at $3500 in materials for this roof, (1200 sq ft house) including the underlayment. Thanks for watching!
