My own personal story: First day on my first ever job, I was getting taught how to work at a gas station. All the wile, I start pressing this weird switch that I didn't know what it did, but it was fun to press. About an hour later, the police come by and tell us that someone's activated the silent alarm over and over. My bosses and I look at each other because we don't know who did it before I come to the realization and admit it was me pressing the switch thing because I didn't know what it was. The police understood and just basically told me not to do it again unless it was a real emergency

Little surprised by that, most police/fire departments actually fine places for frequent false alarms...mostly because if they're hauling ass to your place because someone's just playing with a switch, they aren't available to go respond to actual crimes

@@MrGoesBoomEMS here. Yeah that's true for people who do it "maliciously" as in they are aware of the fact that they are calling for help and more importantly they have been informed previously that what they are calling for is not something that emergency services can help with. The cops saw a dumb kid pressing a button that he didn't know was calling them. Only a completely unreasonable d*ckhead would fine him for that especially after he realized it was him, admitted it in front of his employers and then sincerely apologized for it

I feel the Q-tip person. I didn't know what a sweet potato was until my late teens because I live in New Zealand and we call them "kumera" (the Māori word for sweet potatoes). Every time I found a recipe with "sweet potato" I thought it was for a type of potato that wasn't imported to NZ, and ditched the recipe for a different one with veges I knew. I finally got fed up with the popularity of sweet potatoes, googled "alternatives for sweet potato", and the top result was "five alternatives for kumera". I felt like a complete idiot for days.

Just something to know about the last one. "Hamburgers" don't have "ham" because they were sandwiches made out of two slices of bread and beef in the middle for sailors back some time in Hamburg.
@MarsJenkar
@MarsJenkar 11 ай бұрын
While the Hamburg origin is likely correct, I heard they were originally served in "steak" form--think a Salisbury steak with different seasoning and no gravy--and were thus called "Hamburger steak", later shortened to "hamburger". Serving them in sandwich form came later.

The story I heard (on TV so it must be true) is that it was originally made for the military out of heavily-glued cotton duck, a cheap fabric. When it entered the civilian market, somebody decided it would be good on ducts (it isn't) and named it accordingly. Years later, someone would revive the original tag as a trade name, complete with duck logo.

I used to think that bricks were make by weaving. as in weaving for clothes. because in spanish ''cocer'' means bioling or heating food and other stuff (in this case, heating the clay to make bricks). and the word sounds exactly like ''coser'' which is the action of weaving threads with a neddle. never gave it any thought to realize that is what it meant, even at 28 years old when I already knew about the process. like as if my brain had forgotten to update an old entry.

Actually... those lights on escalators ARE for the blind so far as I'm aware. Most legally blind people can see just well enough to use shining lights as a measure of depth based on how big the lights are as they move towards the lights and whether or not the lights are moving along with whether their foot is covering the lights fully or partially to indicate if they can put their foot down on the step. They can't see regular objects well, so the lights will help them a lot because stairs can be hard enough; let alone moving stairs. However... fully blind people and some people at the very deep end of the legally blind spectrum are probably not going to find it very useful. Fun fact: babies are born legally blind and can't see more than greyish blobs for the first month. Most babies will then see in black and white for the next five months; finally being able to see in full color after a full six months. There are, of course, exceptions; such as premature or late-pregnancies and some people who are born with fewer light cones in their eyes.

Story about my cousin that relates to story 10. He believed for a long time that watermelons grow in water because our uncle put one in a creek to keep it cool and our aunt (uncle's sister) told him that's where it grew. He thought if you planted cheerios the next morning there will be doughnuts, same aunt got him with that by placing a doughnut on a plate where he planted the cheerio. And my favorite is when the same aunt again told him that birdseed grows birds and this was proven by the birds gathering on the yard after the seed was thrown. He was amazed at the "wonders of nature." The one that took him the longest to figure out was the watermelon.

I thought it was cheap excuse for a hanger to hang stuff like bras on by just one strap. At least that was what I used it for. My boyfriend informed me that the four hooks were meant to be snapped apart and than one could put two each on the 'feet' of the stand... I still haven't done that and still use it as a hanger.

I've also heard the sandwich was popularized by Hamburg Lines, bringing Germans over the Atlantic to America. The history of the hamburger is apparently a long, convoluted one, stretching back to the Mongols, tenderizing meat by shoving a slice of it under their saddle and riding all day, then eating it raw. Germans took up this _steack tartare_ adding onions, chives, or capers and binding with egg, but then boiling or frying it, because, you know, it just wasn't done to eat meat raw even if minced up.

This one's a bit more exotic. When i worked construction, one of the guys had himself a short, oldfashioned folding ruler, that he'd gotten somewhere, and found handy. He said the length of the ruler rather puzzled him:it had not been sawn off, but neatly brass-tipped on each end; made that way. "39 inches and some change..." he said. My ears went up. "39 and change? Turn it over ( to read the other side of the rule)! You've got something rare; that's a scientific instrument. It's a folding meter stick." He was suitably impressed at this cute antique that might once have been in the field kit of a botanist or geologist.

The clutch sometimes is enough and u don’t need to hit the gas. Gives a more controlled reverse especially when parallel parking

I drove my Mini Cooper for a year with the tire warning light on thinking I had a faulty tire pressure monitor in one of the tires. turns out you can reset the light to go out and the tire pressure monitors in the wheels aren't used on a Mini, it senses through the ABS.

I had a 2001 Limited Subaru Outback. this thing had all the high-end bells and whistles that were available for the time... problem is, that car had SO MUCH WRONG With it under the hood. My "Ohhh THAT'S What That's For!" moment came mere weeks before it blew its second engine. There was this weird large square on the ceiling in my back seat. It looked like it could be removed, but I could never figure out how. one night I was having fun with my friends and driving them somewhere, and I was playing with the moon roof switch, and apparently I moved it in a way I never moved it before, and low-and behold, that square opened up. my friends then took turns doing that thing you see in the movies when someone stands up through the roof of a limo. I was dumbfounded. I owned that car for two years and I never realized what opened that section. I both loved and hated that car. I loved it for all the cool "rich person" stuff that came with it (I mean- for the time) It had Leather heated seats, a six CD Changer, Moon Roof (and sun roof apparently), power seats, power windows (My first car had the manual windows), Roof Racks, and room in the back to fit a full new tire as a spare... and I hated it because: It blew two engines (not my fault either! I took damn good care of that car!) blew a radiator, and had this unsolvable AC Gas leak- as it would take 1 can of that gas and run through it in a week. My dad tried fixing it many times, but it just wouldn't stop leaking, and finally, the gasket around the hatch window leaked, so anything I had in the hatch back would get soaked in the rain. You get what you pay for- I only paid $2K for it in 2011

LOL We had a '75 Lincoln Continental, that upon reflection , could very well have been haunted. We got it cheap and quickly found out why. The headlights would start to blink randomly, and my ex was a mechanic and old-car fancier. He never did find out what was causing the blinking, and had to hotwire the lights in order to get it to stop. Then, the power seat locks. They would start slowly clicking back and forth and then rise to a veritable fusillade; it got so normal that we forgot to warn people about hem, and it scared the crap out of more than one person. It also got 7 miles to the gallon; his 4104 converted Greyhound RV got better mileage! But boy did that thing keep going...he pulled the spark plugs and they were so coated with carbon from the oil leaking in that they were barely recognizable as spark plugs.

...are you sure that was a troll? I could definitely see how those green lights could make the stairs easier to tell apart for someone with poor vision.

I thought the D in Disney was a G for a long time too, until one day, in 4th or 5th grade, while I was playing with writing some penmanship, I was stylizing a D when I noticed it looked similar. Then it hit me lol

My friend let me have his Original Xbox (this was around 06-07). He said ot worked great, except that there MUST be a disc in the drive AT ALL TIMES or the tray would jam and you'd have to press the button and wiggle it until it opened. Well, I let it close without a disc once; i messed with it briefly, then I saw a small hole under the tray. I knew PC CD drives had this hole to put a straightened paper clip in, and since Xbox was PC BASED I tried it. The door popped open enough that I could gently pull it open. About a year later I gave it back to him, he got the drawer stuck and knew I could get it open in seconds (would've taken him hours) so he calls me. I popped it open with the paper clip(while he watched), his mind got blown.

1:17 I had a horrible, walking red flag roommate (He was the one on the lease) who would take the batteries out of the smoke detectors, each time he cooked. One time he decided to make deep fried pickles, took his pickles into his air conditioned room, close the door with music blaring, and left the pot of oil on high...We had to evacuate the apartment and call the fire department That only lasted a few months thankfully, and I don't live with a walking red flag anymore, although he apparently has a good reputation in the music gig booking industry 👀 Don't even get me started on the layers of slimy black mold in the bathroom, or the hundreds of dead bugs in the sticky fridge

Not kidding I thought they only had 1 type and there's two iced and warm the iced one is chilled with the drink the warmth of your hand doesn't melt the ice in the drink right away and the warm one keeps your hands off the hot cup

Being of the millennial generation myself, I totally understand the person about Pipe cleaners. I Only found out a few years ago what they were originally for smoking pipes but in my defence all my life Smoking has always been seen as 'bad' and almost no-one smoked pipes. (The only person I've ever met who did was my paternal grandfather who died when I was 12) So it's understandable why I wouldn't know. Also my 'oh that's why!' moment was Chocolate Eclairs. I was far too old when I realised it Was chocolate Eclair Not Chocolatey Claire, (I had never seen it written down) I had wondered why they had a girl's name.
