It's not as bad now, but a couple years ago, it was very difficult to find primers and the cost was exponentially higher.
@Drivapete
@Drivapete 4 ай бұрын
@@Swearengen1980 I still can't find any large rifle or magnum primers anywhere in a retail setting. Plenty to go around at the online auction sites though, usually at 3 to 4 times the normal price. Makes me wonder where all the online retailers are getting their "new, fresh stock" primers? I'm lucky, I stockpiled while prices were low and have enough for the rest of my life!
@Swearengen1980
@Swearengen1980 4 ай бұрын
@@Drivapete I see them on occasion in Bass Pro. I buy almost everything online, but I still browse the shelves out of curiosity. I think magnum primers are the hardest to find for sure. I've seen them at gun shows aplenty and the prices are insane. Not as insane as a couple years ago, but still up there. Online retailers often have contracts with certain companies and my theory is that reloaders are more likely to be older men. Older men are more likely to wipe the stores clean first thing in the morning on delivery day. My dad was an FFL and gunsmith for 30 years as a side gig, before the ATF visits got too annoying. He had his 3 wholesale websites for dealers he went through, but after that....he didn't use the internet for shit. What's a google? He had no interest in it. Now that he gave up the FFL and doesn't deal direct, I'm the one who searches the internet and finds good deals on reloading supplies, text them to my mom and she'll show him to say buy or not LOL. But I think that older folk mentality is why certain things are harder to get and the source, or at least a part of it. I'm in my 40s and been in this culture all my life, so I think certain stereotypes are quite applicable.

Inflation is a thing that effects everyone & everything. People who keep looking for things at 2000 prices will continue to be disappointed. Given we are on b/s made up $$$ & not Gold or Silver backed currency...it can never be corrected without massive pain & a revolution at this point. I note that is a lot of ammo on the shelf, y'all should remember what those shelves looked like a few years ago...as for price, some is high priced, and some is very high priced, which partially explains the amount still on the shelf...some calibers are abundant, some are scarce, which has always been kinda normal...don't panic, buy as you can (remember you gotta eat and pay the light bill, too), and use sensible methods to both stash ammo and see the range...

While this batch lasts I have been picking up Hornady Black 5.45 at the local Academy Sports around me for $108 per 100 rounds. That's with all the taxes added in. I have one more I need to hit to see what they have. Once that is exhausted I am going to be looking for the Monarch 5.56 battle packs and 12 gauge field loads. I actually prefer to purchase at brick and Mortar stores because 1) I remember the years when the online places were sold out and the physical locations were the only ones that had product and 2) The one Mom and Pop I use gives me a nice discount due to all the ammunition I purchase there.

Great video. Scheels recently opened a location in my area and I like going there, but I haven't really purchased any ammo from them yet. I normally go to Trueshot ammo which is a majority online retailer, but they do have a showroom at their warehouse where I mostly pick up different ammo. Sportsman's Warehouse has a huge sale going on now and they are roughly the same price for ammo. Honestly, the one caliber I'm looking for quite a bit is .30 Carbine and I've had to resort to going online for the most part since most places don't have it in stock for some reason.

I told them watch in a few months once you whiners have all you safes stocked up it will come back but the prices will be higher because you guys caused it! I used my first stimulus check to buy a gun, so, never paid attention to ammo prices when things were good. Got a .44 magnum Henry, but man finding ammo was a bear. Over the last year or two, I've seen limited availability at the stores around here, but it's there. Usually federal 240 grain. Prices have varied wildly. I am finding standard 240 grain loads, 50 round boxes for $32 online, 64 cents per round. Last time I saw that federal 44 mag at Fleet Farm (regional big box sort of competitor to Scheels, but more on the hardware/farm side of things) it was $65 for a box of 50 rounds, or $1.30 per round. 44 Special remains unobtanium in store. The rare occasions I have seen it, it's only HSM cowboy action, and also around $60 to $65 for 50 rounds. This is in central Wisconsin.

@@thinkingagain5966 Sure. Just make sure you read the reloading manuals before you start, don't substitute one powder for another, etc. NRA teaches a reloading class that I think is supposed to be pretty decent. You can also check out Elvis Ammo and Johnnys Reloading Bench here on KZfaq for some very good videos on about any caliber you want to reload. Getting brass, powder, and bullets is not too bad right now, but primers might still be a bit expensive.

Go to the same scheels and I’ve seen tons of ammo. Shit ton of 6.5 & .308. And that wasn’t even half of their selection. Every week or two they do a mega ammo sale. Looks like it was 7.62x39. They have done the same w/1000 rounds of 5.56 and .308. They really like to pedal the hornady precision hunters. Wish they carried more options for 30-30.

With the current growth of US government debt, it's not a bad idea to stockpile ammo, along with food and other necessities, as prices will only keep going up, even if we cannot predict by how much. No need to panic buy or go overboard, but I'd rather not be unpleasantly surprised when necessities disappear that we had the option to gather up ahead of time.

It's called "Participant Tracking" in some cases and it keeps some people from buying goods from stores. Range USA build a spot near me and it's their BS policy to scan IDs, too. Their public relations rep online responds with a "it's for everyone's safety" copy/paste response. It's the only business in the entire state that I know of which does this. I can walk into the big box store near me and get as much ammo as I want with no questions asked... if insane enough to pay those prices. Stick to purchasing online. There's no reason to get any from physical stores unless the deal is _very_ good, like Black Friday event.

There is Plenty of Ammo out there make no mistake, the problem is that the prices are so high that less people are going out target shooting as often so the sales are not as high as it was. i remember i use to be able to get New Republic Training and Range 9mm Luger Ammo 115 Grain FMJ for $9.00 a box of 50 and now it's $12.25 a box.. so a box of 250 is around $63.00 or so, and i use to get that a lot less.. They say the prices are so high because the United States has depleted much of their ammo because of giving it to Ukraine, and that is probably true, so you probably won't see a price reduction for at least a few years because it takes years to re-stockpile ammo.. So as long as Biden is giving ammo to Ukraine we are going to see expensive prices for ammo for quite a while, until at least Either Russia defeats Ukraine which will happen sooner or later, or Trump gets into office and puts a stop to this madness..

That might be true, but because I buy no less than 1000 rds at a time I buy from TrueShot, Freedom Munitions, or A&E Armory. Freedom just built new plant and are making there own cases now. Sig is hiring another 625 people at it's Arkansas plant, and the Vista ammo plant (formally Remington Ammo plant) was just sold to CSG which is hiring another 325 people for that plant in Lonoke, Arkansas. And Fiocchi just broke ground for a 281 acre primer manufacturing facility at Little Rock.. So it seems to be looking pretty good even with the global conflicts going on.@@FitnFire

@@AK3289 The .223 will _always_ be cheaper than 5.56 and on occasion Winchester will offer a seasonal rebate offer to get a bit more back after buying qualified calibers. Steel case is the go-to for anyone who doesn't want to break the bank and/or does not worry about the whole "it ruins your gun!" debacle. Ammoseek is your friend. By default it lists low to high with options on the sidebar to filter caliber, case material, and shipping options. Through OpticsPlanet last fall I was able to get 300 rounds of brass .223 with a $33 rebate and they were already marked down to (just under) $9 per 20. That'll likely never happen again but keep an eye out. Try not to spend more than 45¢ per round.
