This is a 1982 Pontiac Trans Am that was left in a garage for 27 years. I purchased it for $4,500, detailed it for 2 days, then sold it for a profit to a Trans Am fanatic! The before and after transformation was huge and overall was an extremely rewarding detail. Enjoy! - L

Thx for all the wonderful comments! Chuck is thrilled we got the car out of the garage so quick, I'm happy to get the TA to a great home, and the new owner is OVER THE MOON excited about his new project. It was a win win win. I check Hagerty valuation tool with the exact VIN # for those of you wondering. I wish I could put a screen shot up here, but it says the lowest value (poor condition, not running, bits of rust, mold, etc etc...) = $1,560. The average price in GOOD condition (not great or concours but running) is $7,300. So I think Chuck got a fair value for his car 1. In that condition, not having to remove/flatbed/used car lot etc... 2. Having it done within 2 days and no hassles with posting on the internet, 3. Cash in hand 4. Paid his price (which was a bit more than what the valuation tools suggested, but at the end it worked out. At the time, I was unclear what the "instagram world" would pay for it all cleaned up. Nervous at first, but happy in the end) 5. Grandson made some loot for an email and phone call. Not bad at all :) Hindsight being 20-20, I think I paid more than fair value price for a 3rd gen TA in that condition (per Hagerty), and the new owner paid top dollar (according to Hagerty) because he wanted that specific 4-speed and transmission. So still worked out. I'm unclear why that particular tranny is so desirable, but nonetheless he was very happy to be the first to get the TA before the 4 others. Super glad that EVERYONE made out and we were able to film it for an episode. Isn't it crazy that KZfaq IS FREE TO WATCH as a viewer. Yeah there's ads...but on TV you PAY to watch Ads (that you cant skip). Grateful for such a open platform.

I'm stunned that the original owner was willing to let it go for $4.5k. What a beautiful car. Awesome work on the restoration.

That buyer is exactly what I would imagine a Trans Am owner to look like.

Sounds crazy pathetic that 5 L only gave you 150 car horses back in early 8'ies. Nowadays you can get more from less than 2 L.

"with a 5 litre V8, producing 150 horse power" It always amazed me how American cars had such big engines that produced so little power!

what a satisfying vid. not only cleaning up the car, but seeing it fire right up, do a smoky burnout, and finding the ac even works! thats a proper good barnfind. it makes a huge difference when theyre kept INSIDE.

4500$ is a steal, even for 145k miles. GM also had a recall back in 82 because the hupcaps kept flying off and they had different clips that would go on the hubcaps but nobody ever really did it. So now the best thing to do is to use zip ties to hold the hubcaps on. You have to do that all while the wheel is off so that you can attach it all without seeing the zip ties.

Probably the most insane paint difference I’ve seen on any of your vids. Great stuff

Just a tip for any detailers out there, from a painter. Your mil thickness gauge tells you total thickness of dry material, including undercoats. So your paint thickness could be say, 8 mil, and you could only have 1 mil of clearcoat to work with.

Whats so cool about Larry is that whenever he finds cars like this one he always asks the owner of its history, a great trait as a presenter, plus his legendary detailing prowess, its really a joy to watch these episodes of Drive + Protect the minutes go really fast, speaks to how enjoyable this series is

I'm sure that David Haselhoff would be very proud. The fact that its a manual trans makes it more valuable. Great job. Thank you.

Best reselling episode I have ever seen since the old times of wheeler dealers, got it for a great deal which brings humility in society that you can get a deal like that. The after shots are beautiful too, you’ve come a long way with the cinematically

Larry your channel has inspired me to get into washing and detailing cars. I do mine, my wife, family members and friends. It was always a joy of mine. My dad and I used to love washing his car on Saturday afternoons when I was a little boy.

As a Pontiac guy who came of age in the 70s, I had this same 305 V8 engine (with a two barrel carb and a three speed auto transmission) in a Vega based 1979 Sunbird notchback coupe, buckskin/ butter tan paint with the Ralley option package: three color gradient bronze/gold lower body graphics (no screaming chicken on the hood), rear decklid body colored lip spoiler, discreet body colored front spoiler, dark graphite sport wheels with the polished chrome trim rings, buckskin tan bucket seats with center console and shifter, Trans Am steering wheel, the unique dash with tach and speedo (80mph?) and an eight track AM only(?) stereo with one center speaker in the front and one in the rear package tray. My buddies said it looked like a Trans Am that had been left in the dryer too long - the "baby" Trans Am. My high school graduation present. I ruined my drivers license in that thing - it was fast, relatively low key, comfortable and very torquey. Never, ever saw another like it save for my neighbor who had an identical one in sapphire blue, same package but with a V6 and five speed transmission. Loved, loved, LOVED that car. Always loved Pontiacs and that 305 engine was bulletproof. Watching this video brings back many fond memories - love your channel and the revival/preservation that you do!

Larry, this video made me cry with joy! Seriously. I lost my father last year and in 1986 he bought a 1984 Manual Trans Am off the boat here in Australia. Black with grey trim. He kept it in top condition. The car passed to me and as much of a money pit that it is, it runs well and due to the memories I just cant sell it. Thanks for rekindling my passion for this vehicle and motivating me to keep it detailed and pristine. Keep up the great work!
