Hey guys, welcome to todays video. in today's video, I try to get running a 1991 Pontiac Firebird. will it run and drive for the first time in 10 + years??? and will I be able to get this thing to drive out of the wrecking yard with no VATS keys. I found this third gen Firebird at a wrecking yard not parked not to far away from some other third gen Trans Am and Camaros. and I simply could not leave it there. so in today's video I am going to get running this Pontiac Firebird without VATS keys. stay tuned to the video to see how you're able to get your 3rd gen Camaro Trans Am or Firebird running without the VATS keys (Vehcile Anit Theft System) the goal for the video was to be able to get the car running and driving and take it to a local car show. so hopefully go from Wrecking Yard to car show in the same week.
will it run will it drive??? stay tuned to the end of today's video to find out thanks for watching.

Great video! It was nerve wracking everytime it almost started haha! Also learned a lot about the VATS system and I'm sure it will help others. I like how you explain what you're doing, and nice clear close ups. Thanks for putting the time and effort into this video. Was fun to watch!

I had a 92 park avenue with the "computer chip key" it had 289,000 miles original engine trans when I got rid of it. Both still fine. However car was so rusted it wasn't safe. Anyways being a first year model plus having 250k miles it had quirks. One of em was occasionally the chip wouldn't read. On that car it would shut down the fuel pump and possibly injectors as well it would still crank though. The bad part was it shut down for 15mins. If you tried it before 15mins the clock would re start. So you could wait 14 mins, try it then have to wait again. Anyways from what I understand about the system the chip was just a resistor. Each one had a different ohms value. I was told years ago you could have a gm dealer run the Vin and give you a # for what resistor you had. Then either buy a key cylinder set online or buy a key, file it down to fit the cylinder in the car, then splice in longer wires, tuck the original cylinder under the dash, then install another cylinder in the column. That way the vats system is effectively bypassed.

As an owner of an 83 Bird, I am happy you got this car. It has no business in a grave yard. You would have saved yourself a lot of time and money with this VATS system by using the free software for reprogramming the ECU on these cars and unchecking the box that says VATS.

Nice that's awesome I had an 83 Trans Am in high school. Thanks yeah I agree it had no business being in that yard at all. Transmission does need to be replaced. Actually came across an 86 Firebird yesterday that I'm going to pick up later this month. It's got the T5 manual transmission and the 2.8V6. I'm thinking I'm going to take the T5 and put it into the 91 Firebird. Rebuild a 700 R4 from that car. And then pull the 2.8 V6 out of the 86 and drop in a 350/rebuilt 700R4 into the 86 and restore that one too. Haha I also have a pair of 84 Trans ams I'll be picking up too later in October. To build as well, haha come across some really good deals when I'm out doing my internet installs.

My dad bought a 92 camaro several years ago and the owner didn’t have the keys. I wired in a potentiometer from a guitar to find resistance needed for the key and it fired up. Measured resistance and permanently wired resistors in and no need for the chip key.

@johnbweems oh that's a really good idea I've had a the few people tell me it was a common problem for those vehicles that the wires for the key would pinch in the column and cause issues for VATS system. That Gator bypass moduleI picked up seemed to work really well. I think for any other third-gen I pick up I'm going to do just that wire in the right resistor so I don't have any issues with the keys.

@@fullyloadedkustoms Yes indeed, i don't exactly have an exact year I want. Sadly im in the states so they are ALL ragged out. That is unless you are looking to spend 10K on one that has some high mileage. I greatly love the 91-92's due to the aerodynamic nose cone but its virtually impossible to find one that isn't spiderwebbed. My 91 I had was a cancer victims car named Sam Ross. He built it in his shed with all sorts of goodies. It sat for 10 years after he died where someone bought his home from the bank and inherited the firebird in the shed. Then they listed it for 500 bucks for a no title v6 firebird. Boy was I happy, 350 with bunch of goodies and AutoZone special cosmetics lol!

You can fully bypass VATS by having a chip burned for the ecu, and removing and bypassing the relay in the kick panel. Or you can get a sign wave generator and feed that to ecu and bypass the relay. But since you figured out the resistor value you can get a key cut and keep VATS. I'm one of the few hat has VATS operational in my LS swapped car. Don't forget to change the diff fluid before driving it much, and re pack the front wheel bearings, commonly over looked on these.

Sadly my 89 met an untimely death when a cord ranger stopped in the middle of the road. I locked up the brakes and that was the end. Happened back in 2000, but I still miss that car. It was slow, but felt and sounded fast. That 305 was not a big HP maker, but she could do a good burnout😂😂

@dpittel ahh that sucks to hear, they are fun cars to drive right exhaust on them and they sound aggressive and great. Haha hey as long as they do a Burnout your good to go. Haha my old 83 2.8L V6 camaro could do a Burnout with little oil on the tires to help Haha. Still was fun to drive and made lots of great memories with it

That's just amazing to see that Firebird that sadly went to junkyard at 10 years and everybody probably thought that was in this last rest in place and the Phoenix flying bird rose from the graveyard and said I'm not dying here luckily someone like you came by and saved it and it was able to drive out of its final parking spot get back out there and be enjoyed instead of being Alpha Pastor that's awesome that you saved it a little work and I think it'll be like new

Oh yeah, it was in really good shape. Couldn't leave it there, haha. I'm really happy I was able to get it running and driving and drive it out of there. Yeah, I definitely wanted to show anyone watching how I dealt with the VATS system. So, hopefully, that will keep a few more 3rd/4th gens on the road if people are buying them without keys. That gator by pass module about a $60 fix for that issue. Ahhh that's awesome I had an 83 Camaro and also a 83 Trans am back in high school. So I can't wait to get this Firebird all painted up over the winter and get it back on the road again.

With that car having over 200,000 miles. that transmission would have suffered , especially with the fluid and filter not changed. It would explain it’s current state. Also when you filled it I think you added too much as. The top part of the shaded area on the dipstick is for when the car has been driven in hot weather for some time ONLY. I’m sure you are aware of that though. Kudos for saving this rare bird and I LOVE your joy and enthusiasm when things work out👍👍😀 I own a 82 Trans Am since 1992 and it’s now covered 226,000 miles on the same 200c tranny and 4bbl 5 litre engine. If you look after your ride without abuse they last well. Sadly many do not. I also agree for the age and mileage that interior is excellent. Keep making the vids . I am learning a few things about the later 3rd gens too👍👍😉

Oh exactly I'm sure that the 700 R4 in that car had probably definitely seen some abuse for sure, yeah I wasn't to worried at the time I've change the fluid out on the car I think three more times after this video. The transmission is definitely wrecked though I do have a new 7004 transmission for it I will be swapping over here in the next few months once I'm done working on the 1980 Scottsdale I have currently got in the shop right now. Oh nice what color is your 1982 Trans am? I'm looking at picking up a white ish hhaha 1986 Trans Am in the spring here if it's still available.

Haha going to be on a mission to rebuild these 3rd gens. That's awesome the used to have an 83 Camaro in high school. Definitely used to get the girls saying can you take me for a ride haha. Brings back alot of great memories. Exactly I agree with that statement 💯% KZfaq is the way to go, there's noting more I would love to do every day then wake up and give these cars a 2nd chance at live and to hit the road again. Thanks I greatly appreciate that 🙏

Thanks much appreciated. You know I really thought it wasn't going anywhere, too. I Just was not going to give up on the Firebird. Haha, I was fully ready and preparing ways to swap the transmission with the one next to it so I could drive it out of there if I had to hahah.

That's awesome. My first car in high school was in 1983 Camaro sports coupe. My buddy Nick had a 1987 Pontiac Firebird a white one. Lots of great memories driving these cars around in high school.

@@MetsaMan oh nice that's awesome what colour is your 1989 Firebird? My buddy Nick back in high school had a white 1989 Firebird Formula. What are you planning to put it in for a motor?

For sure no problem I definitely wanted to go over all the issues I ran into when I was trying to get this Firebird up and running again. That way hopefully it can help somebody else out in the same situation if they happen to come across the same issues I did
