What the heck is an amp hour and why are there so many sizes of batteries? #batterycapacityexplained #whatisbatterycapacity #whatisamphour #whatiskilowatthour
If anyone has wondered what Ah means or what is the difference between 20 hr and 10 hr, this video will attempt to explain. We all use batteries all the time but most people don't understand how much energy they hold or how long they will last.

Amp-hour ratings are approximate statements related to the stored energy capacity of a battery. Energy is power over time. If you look at the chart, each curve corresponds to discharging a battery at a different current. Power is current times voltage. If you multiply the voltage curves on the chart by the respective currents, you will get a new set of curves, the area under which is the energy drawn from the battery. For example, the leftmost curve shows a drain of 32.5 amperes. The initial power drain at this current is 11.7 X 32.5 = 380.25 watts and this power curve would be much higher than the rightmost curve showing a drain of .33 amps, initially at about 12.8 volts = about 4.2 watts. The area under the two curves should be about the same, the energy capacity of the battery. Actually the high curve may show a little less capacity because some of the energy is being dissipated as heat in the battery proportional to the square of the current. All this is too complex for the average consumer so amp-hours is used as a simple metric related to capacity.

@machine60
@machine60 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry, @trueman, if I wasn’t clear. Technically, energy is the integral of power over time. If the power is constant, then energy is simply power times time, hence power is in watts or kilowatts, time is usually in hours in this case. Hence energy is often expressed in watt hours or kilowatt hours.

Thanks for the reply! I asked my friend and he said the same thing. Now I don't understand if I have 8 12v 150w panels in series I should have two charge controllers or do they make them go past 96v? I'm sorry that's my last question because he is older I don't think he knew
@LDSreliance
@LDSreliance 7 жыл бұрын
You don't want all those panels in series making 96v. You want them in parallel or series and parallel. Again, it depends on what you are trying to power. But 96v is unusable by almost any inverter or directly powered load. You want 12v, 24v, or 48v. You will have to organize the panels into what is called "strings" and then use a large charge controller to handle them OR use multiple smaller ones, one on each string.

It's a lot easier to understand the capacity of a battery by converting the rating to watts. Amps 225 x volts 12 = 2700 watts So if you have an electrical device that draws 100 watts, you can theoretically run it for 27 hours. But if you don't want to destroy your battery, you'll won't run it past 50 percent discharge. So you really don't want to run a 100 watt device for much more than 13.5 hours. Or a 50 watt device for 27 hours. Or a 25 watt device for more than 54 hours. Or a 12.5 watt device for more than 108 hours. Or a 6.25 watt device for 216 hours.

Hello. I have a question that needs a good clear answer. My intention: To busk with my bass amp using a battery. Ok so my bass amp is : 100 watt max output. 310 Watt power consumption I have a 500 watt (1000 peak) invertor (modified wave). I read on 2 sites that its a god idea for to besafe, use a wattage 10-15 pcent on top of the power consumption value. (mine being 310 watts) I wont be cranking the amp up loud as it produces some lovely low end sounds. So..... For the battery, im aware of deep cycle bateries are more energy efficient (i dont mind charging it up eith my 12v charger when needed). There is a guy called DUB FX on youtube and he walks you through his setup. His setup is a 200 watt roland speaker combo amp. HE USES AN 800 WATT MODIFIED sine wave inverter and a 66ah 12v gel battery. My amp is half the wattage as his. Which battery would suit me for 3 hours of play time? Weight isnt too much of a problem . Thanks in advance folks of voltagery wattagery wizdom

good video, about the lithiums in the EV's in comparison by using ledacid batteries to cover almost the entire floorboard with ledacid rechargeable, how do you think the performance could be? using specifically 'say' multiple 1,000cca ledacid truck batteries in series or both series and parallel connected to a electric fork truck motor? it'll definitely get warm maybe fan's underneath giving it a hydroplane effect, cooling the batteries. You could put some super capacitors before the ledacid batteries for extended life, and after the ledacid for drain. what do you think?
@vincenttelfer4206
@vincenttelfer4206 5 жыл бұрын
sorry I meant ledacid batteries. you can take a dead nickle rechargeable and put it on a lithium charger it'll charge quick try a AA the nickle holds 2 properties of being an electrolyte and acid, being able to take a quick charge acting like an electrolytic without the electrolytes, to prove this open a dead AA nickle then soak it in electrolytes the glue it back together. or if possible if you know the right spot drill a tiny hole then soak it.

@LDSreliance
@LDSreliance 6 жыл бұрын
Are you talking about 2 batteries versus 1 battery of the same capacity? Generally that means you are comparing two 6V batteries connected in series vs a single 12V battery. It depends on the quality of the batteries. Generally, a 6V battery will be either a golf cart or industrial battery which are very durable and higher quality than a typical 12V deep cycle battery. Now there are obviously 12V deep cycle batteries that are high quality from Trojan or Rolls or other companies. But when most people think 12V they think of a marine or RV battery. So in that case the two 6V batteries would be much better than a single 12V battery.

I have 2 6V gel deep cycle batteries but no info label stating amp hours. Is there any way or a test to calculate battery amp hours?
@LDSreliance
@LDSreliance 6 жыл бұрын
You would have to simulate how the manufacturer's test and determine amp hour capacity. They fully charge the battery, let it rest a bit, then put a very specific current load on the battery and time how long it takes to discharge. They do it at various current levels and that will allow you to do the math you need to estimate the amp hours.

To double the voltage AND the capacity you would have to have 4 batteries. But putting batteries in parallel is not as good because they will charge and discharge unevenly. Try to only do series in battery banks for best results.

Sorry, but I don't get this, I don't think you provided any explanation at all as to what an amp hour is. An amp for one hour straight, right, i get that, but at what voltage, or what's the load impedance or the power in watts? Why arent batteries simply rated in watt hours? Can someone please tell me what an amp hour actually really is? For example, according to Ohms law (V=I*R), if you take a standard 1.5V AA battery, you would need to put a 1.5 Ohm load resistance across the battery +- terminals to draw 1 amp. Drawing 1 amp from a 1.5V voltage supply for 1 hour through a 1.5 ohm load resistance is the equivalent V*I=1.5*1=1.5 watt hour. But if you take a standard 12V car battery, you would need to connect a 12 ohm load resistance to draw 1 amp. Drawing 1 amp from a 12V voltage supply burns 12 watts and doing it for one hour is the equivalent of 12 watt hours, more than 8 times as much power as with the 1.5V AA battery example. Surely the true definition of an amp hour refers to some fixed measurement of power, and not just some vague varying definition depending on voltage supply? So what gives?? What the actual f'''' is an amp hour?
@LDSreliance
@LDSreliance 7 жыл бұрын
Don't get fixated on voltage. It is as simple as a quantity of energy in a battery that allows one amp to flow for one hour. That rate changes based upon the amps drawn. A higher load will draw more amps and capacity will diminish at a more rapid rate. Capacity drain is not constant. According to Peukert's Law, the faster the drain, the lower the actual capacity is. That is why this is so hard for people to understand. It is not linear.
@mortenrobinson
@mortenrobinson 7 жыл бұрын
"Don't get fixated on voltage." But if i don't know the voltage, then i don't know the power. If i don't know the power, then i don't know how much effect a battery would actually give me. Saying that it is as simple as a quantity of energy that allows one amp to flow for one hour is insufficient information, because 1 amp driven by a 12 volt battery has a lot more energy and power, 8 times more energy to be exact than 1 amp driven by a 1.5 volt power supply. So are you saying that an amp hour for a 12 volt battery is 8 times as much as an amp hour for a 1.5V battery? That makes no sense that an amp hour would not be a fixed quantity of measurement.
@LDSreliance
@LDSreliance 7 жыл бұрын
Battery capacity has nothing to do with that, though. You can have a 10 Ah battery that is 6V and a 10 Ah battery that is 12V. They both have the same capacity. Obviously one of them will be able to provide that capacity at a higher voltage and thus a higher wattage, but the capacity is the same.

@LDSreliance

No because the amp draw on the battery will be less. It will actually run longer due to Peukert's Law. In other words, a 12V battery with 100Ah is equivalent to a 24V battery with 50Ah. Now let's say you want to use a 500W load off of your batteries. If you run that load on your 12V battery it will consume 41.67A. If you run that load on your 24V battery it will consume 20.83A. The 24V battery will be able to run that load longer because Peukert's Law states the higher the current draw the lower the capacity of the battery. Does that make sense?

The run rate is 0.05C and the duration is 20 hours. 1C is the theoretical rate at which a battery would discharge in 1 hour based on the capacity. So if a battery is rated at 70Ah, then C=70A. So the 20 hour rate would then be 3.5A for 20 hours. Does that make more sense?

If they are both 25W then no. Also, the battery does not matter once the bike is running. The alternator will provide the power. So it would be more of a question of whether your alternator can handle it. But if the original light and new light are the same wattage then it will be fine.

I ask this because the scooter seemed to never be able to drive fast speed again after the 20s were installed. Always drove at lagged speed that felt like battery was about to die...as if it didn't charge, even tho it was keft to charge a long long time. While I know, I will need an inverter, but I can't tell heads or tails of the amp rating of the BU switched isolated battery I'm considering. Here is an example: There are various references to amps, but I have no idea which one indicates the 'basic' amp rating. Open Circuit Voltage - 13.3V Max Charge Voltage - 15.0V Recommended Charge Voltage - 14.5V Minimum Voltage - 8.0V Max Discharge Current - 2,400A Continuous Discharge Current - 1,080A Max Charge Current - 540A RC - 124 minutes @25A Watt-hours - 675. Most of the values seem rather high, so I'm guessing RC-25 (Run Continuous) amps?

Daniel, that is a very interesting battery. I am highly, highly skeptical of the specs, though. 675 Watt hours is only about 56Ah. A comparable 65Ah lithium iron phosphate battery that I carry from Miller Tech only costs $580 and can handle a maximum of 200A. Your battery claims it can provide 30,000W (2,500A) burst and 15,000W continuous (1,250A). That is not only incredible but very dangerous. That much current would require incredibly large cables and great attention to safety as it could instantly start a fire or electrocute you. If these claims are true, it is constructed as a starter type battery and would not be appropriate for deep cycle use as it would not last long. If you are interested I can help you find a battery that would work. Just shoot me an email at ldsreliance@gmail.com.

Unfortunately, Peukert's Law states that as you increase the current draw on a battery, the capacity drops. And it isn't really linear so it makes it hard to estimate. But with the limited info you provided, that small of a battery cannot provide that much current without heating up to dangerous levels within 30 seconds. For example, the lithium iron phosphate battery I showed in a recent video (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i6iahZN6rZqYZWQ.html) which is only slightly smaller than yours can only provide 50 amps for less than 30 seconds. After that it is dangerous. I know that doesn't answer your question directly but you will need a bigger battery or three to run that load for any meangingful amount of time.
@wateryblaze

Please don't compare lead-acid batteries with Lithium Ion batteries when talking capacity. It adds confusion into the mix. While Li-Ion batteries give back most of the charge, lead-acid batteries conform to Peukert's Law, which was discovered not long after their invention back in 1859 by Gaston Planté. That's the discharge run-time graph you show. There are very few good lead-acid battery tutorials on the internet. Most are trying to show how to calculate the size of the battery bank and solar panel installation and then they add in the charge controllers (PWM & MPPT) and inverters (pure sine wave and modified sine wave) into the mix and very few viewers can figure out what the video was all about in the first place. Each of these topics deserves a separate tutorial with real facts and figures, probably 2 or more parts to some of them. Did the spec sheet show the charging characteristics? Most don't but depending on the plate construction and chemistry, you need between 30 to 40% more energy to fully recharge the battery. For example, a fully discharged 100AH deep-cycle lead-acid battery will require between 130 and 140 AH of charge. A point sadly missed by most battery tutorials. Other videos are busy trying to sell batteries and add even more confusion. These are put together by sales-people who don't really understand the vagaries of rechargeable batteries of any type, let alone lead-acid. There are videos that repeat myths that need to be eliminated about lead-acid batteries. For a "thing" invented back in 1859, they have more myths and legends about them than anything else that I know of.

When you connect your batteries in Series your voltages doubles but your capacity stays the same. So your series connected 2*12V = 24V with 200AH. In order to have a higher capacity you need to double your batteries. So 2 in series and 2 in parallel. That will make your total 24V with 400AH. Hope this answers your question.

You can't test the battery capacity without hooking it up to a load. Basically, you need a battery tester that can measure the amps and keep track of how much energy is consumed on a given load. Then you can do the math for how long you ran the load multiplied by the current that was consumed.

Willie, I would get a Kill A Watt meter and test exactly how many kWh that ice shaver uses during your 8 hour day. I bet you that it does not use 600 watts the whole time. If you don't have that meter, it is really cheap and a great investment to check the usage of many different appliances and loads. It is under $20 with free shipping and will save you a bunch on your solar system: amzn.to/2rQ2bth Anyways, if you don't want to check the actual usage and we have to assume it uses 600W all day then you would need around 2250 Watts of solar panels and at least 225 Ah of battery capacity. That is assuming 4.5 sun hours per day (since I don't know where you live) and no battery storage for rainy or overcast days. If this is in the summer and this is a shaved ice stand and you are only open for business when it is hot and sunny then you could do it with about 900 Watts of solar panels and your existing 105 Ah battery for buffering the startup of the motor.

The charging current of a lead acid battery is limited by the internal resistance, which is pretty high. So usually lead acid chargers like you see for car batteries are 1-10A for the most part. @@LDSreliance Hey I am reading the comments and looking at your replies and looking for things that draw my interest. I have a question also and it is kinda similar to the one above. So if lead acid batteries don't like to be rapid charged it makes me wonder what about if say you have them pretty well charged at 12.6 volts and the charger isn't pushing much into them. Then you put a high drain or load on them like an a/c which I am going to guess around 15 amps or say a microwave taking 1500watts (11 amps?) and then start pumping that current into them at the same time. So I guees its like massive discharge while massive charging. Another question and I understand that mybquestions are long and getting to be longer. I can probably try to watch more videos but thought to ask. Umm so most chargers detect the resistance in a battery so say you had a 40 amp charger that can charge at 40 amp hours and you ran 10 amp hours out of a battery bank what's stopping the charger from trying to dump 40 amps into it or if your battery bank is to small and you try to have lots of energy pumping into them? I guess I could say what I'm am thinking about for charging is solar. Say you have plenty of solar power for your batteries and want to know if you can charge and discharge close to the same rate if the battery is already charged and just having a lot of heat going thru them? Also I would have battery temp sensors if that could help.

How does a battery power a motor? I am not sure what you are asking.

No. The rating you are talking about is Amp hours, which is different than Amps. Amps is a measurement of current or "volume" of flow. Amp hours is a measurement of capacity or "total volume" contained within a battery. Increasing the Amps to the scooter will likely destroy the motor in time. But increasing the Amp hours of the battery will just allow you to run the scooter longer without harming the motor.

What's the difference between volts and ah? Why do android phone batteries have an ah capacity while a dry cell have volts? Please enlighten me, I'll appreciate it.

Those are two different measurements. All batteries have both ratings. The manufacturer may not put that information on the battery, though.
