2021 Ram 3500 Tradesman longbed.... I just turned 65, I couldn't get in my new truck without the AMP automatic steps, they are a lifesaver because of my disability, they retract low enough for me to safely board the vehicle, cheap nerf bars would have been dangerous for me. Thanks AMP....

I realize this is an older video. A side by side comparison of the technical differences between the "regular" and "extreme" would be appreciated. Four vs. two motors probably extends the life of both the motors and the hinges. I think people would feel better if they knew that the hinge/arm components are beefier as well as the undersides of the rails. I was checking out the (more expensive) Rockslide step. They sell a version/add-on that uses higher strength steel to protect the retracted steps. I personally like the lower profile look of the AMPs.

Excellent video, made the install painless. I have elderly parents and in-laws and these steps are perfect for helping them get in & out of our truck. in addition the use of these steps seem to be saving the seats from unnecessary wear on the bottom cushion outer sides. Side note: you did not cover the led light portion of the install, nor did you even mention them in your video. But still a great video.

I bought this set for my brand new 2018 Ram 2500 Mega Cab and they gave me fits to install them! I followed the written instructions exactly to the letter. Got all done, was all proud. Put power to them… And the retracted up under the truck and wedged behind the pinch welds. I worked for hours putting brackets and linkages on than taking them back off numerous times, I adjusted brackets and linkages to NO avail. The boards jammed up and got stuck under the truck every time to the point where I had to remove the motors and pried them out from under my brand new truck scratching up the AMP Research running boards. Decided to call customer service. I called and spoke with Brian Weaver. I explained my situation and he seemed to know exactly what happened. Brian said “they got stuck behind the pinch weld right???” I said Yep!!! He said with a snarky little attitude “I’ll send you an email that’ll explain what to do”… So I get this email with an eight step process to remedy the problem. I followed that set of instructions to the letter again. Well step # 8 said if all else fails take a hammer and bend the pinch weld seam over to make it fit. I tried but I would have had to bend that seam over 45 degrees and I didn’t want to go that far with the sledge hammer. Long story short I had to take a 4” angle grinder, remove ¼” + off the top of the pinch weld seam to get my new $1500 AMP Research’s running boards to operate on my $70,000 brand new truck. Needless to say I was PISSED!!!! For that amount of money the AMP Research product should have fit like a glove. If you are looking to buy a set of nice power retractable running boards LOOK SOMEWHERE ELSE! Don’t spend your money here, You will be Disappointed !!!!! PS… I took the AMP Research badges off the steps so they don’t get any free advertising from me. They better run flawlessly for a long time… If they so much as hiccup I’m going to unbolt them and throw them into the dumpster……. I’ll definitely let you know…….

Steve Koz if I planned on doing a bunch of off roading or lived in icey conditions I would probably go extreme just to have that additional motor. If I wasn’t super hard on the truck I would just go regular. I don’t think you could really go wrong either way but if you are like me, buy the best (more expensive) version and not have to think about upgrading later. I'm looking at getting these for my truck very soon. Obviously having 2 motors per step is better than one, but is there any other benefit other than "more is better"? Are the linkages beefier on the xtreme? Is the board itself more significant? Just trying to justify the added cost of the Xtreme. Thanks!
@GearsGadgets
@GearsGadgets 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think there is really much of a difference aside from the dual motors vs single motors. I've had both and I can say the dual motors is a nicer setup in general but if budget were a concern I wouldn't tell you NOT to go with the single motors.
@brendonjenson3156

@omarramirez2335
@omarramirez2335 4 жыл бұрын
The best way to put it regardless if budget is not an issue is with the single motors per side if one of those motors stops working down the road you’re left without working step for that side and a cost of probably 200$ or so for a replacement motor The extra piece of mind with dual motors is they’ll still work even if one motor ever decides to stop working in the future I have them on a 2019 Ram 1500 Rebel and they work flawlessly

I appreciate the video. These steps (especially the new extreme models) have been on my mind for a while lol. I guess my only concern i have about these is "what if they break" from what i have seen they would usually stop lowering if something is in the way or will not go up if you have you foot on them while closing the door. I know you said in your video that they have served you well. But i guess im just trying to hear it again lol. Have you ever heard of these messing up when there is mud involved. I am not a hardcore off roader, but sometimes when im working the places we would be in are pretty muddy. Would hate for one of the motors stop working because of some mud.
@GearsGadgets
@GearsGadgets 3 жыл бұрын
I haven't had any issues with either versions, the regular and the Xtreme. The only reason I upgraded is because my first video performed so well that I reached out to AMP for the second set. So these were sponsored videos but I take my recommendations SUPER seriously and wouldn't tell you something that wasn't true, my reputation on this channel is FAR more valuable than some running boards. I work in construction so my running boards get their fair share of sand (here in Phoenix), and mud and they haven't acted up ever. I also had the original steps for a winter season in Buffalo, NY and they never had any issues freezing up so I would safely be willing to say it again, no problems here.

@jameshuban6515 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. I was thinking about it and looking at the installation procedure. Are the mounts attached to the rocker panels or the frame? If so, I think the cab bottom would not accommodate the step running beyond the cab. The sheet metal at the back of the cab might hinder the steps from folding. It's a shame I prefer the lower profile of these power steps instead of rigid mounted styles. I'm curious if the steps could be cut to fit the shorter length of the regular cab truck. The steps look like they are extruded aluminum with some sort of cap on the end. Of course I'm sure that would void the warranty.

Philip Delzmen. Man, I put a XL package on a 2020 silverado this summer, and I live in Wisconsin. We are going through deer season now and I've run the steps over a few soft dirt banks and a few mud/water ruts with 3" this broken ice mixed in. The steps do glide over some stuff but I am hesitant to do much more with them, in that if you jack up the hinges at all, i don't think they'll run smoothly. I'm 250#s and they work fine for me, but my two boys who run almost twice my size are leery of using them, even though they're rated for 600#s. This said, there's really only 4 small 1/4" bolts connecting the steps to the arms. I guess with all this said, I don't expect the steps to act much like power rock sliders, in that you have movable parts that if bent, will not function like you want them to - that is to drop down when you open the doors.. Just my thoughts though. If you're good with a welder and bender, you could still put rock sliders in place outside of where the steps tuck in, that would take the brunt of any rocks or roots (being the jeep is a 1/3 less weight of my Silverado). Good luck with the build - the steps I have really work for what they are designed to do..

I find it odd that you mentioned one time the extreme has four motors and nothing about any reason why replacing the same two motor steps. Four motors are considerably more expensive. Other than not cutting the boards, why did you swap them out for four motors? Also, now living in a desert you don’t worry about ice and you said the two motors worked fine in freezing weather. Why four motor steps? Are they $700 better?

Yes one motor on each end is better then one motor on one end. It distributes and evens out the weight. And say if worse case scenario one motor dies u have another one that still works.

I have a good relationship with AMP and wanted to show their new offering. Ultimately it’s dope that they give you the option to decide for yourself if you think it’s worth it. Not a lot of companies would do that. I think it’s worth it but you have to decide for yourself.

Gears & Gadgets Thank you for your reply. I purchased the AMP steps, they are very nice to have on the truck. They make me realize how many times I get in and out each day by me anticipating their sound opening and closing. They are neat, I like them, they work well for me.

@@73powerstroke56 It's probably a better design. See my link below. $80 for a replacement motor. That's not unreasonable.

They’re trick,but too many inherent problems with them with road salt, snow,ice, and mud.Can’t see how they could stand up to that for very long.

Mine lived in Buffalo NY for a winter with the salt and snow and had no issues at all. What I will say is that NOTHING holds up well in those climates including regular steel boards that rust and fall apart after 2-3 seasons. I didn't have any issues so that's all I can say.

Mine have been absolute garbage! I wont ever buy them again. I live in Canada and trust me, we get snow. If its cold outside, they wont go to up. If there is any bit of snow or ice on them, which after 2min on the road there is, they go up part way and shut off. Not only that, but the paint peeled and flaked-off the boards and exposed the metal. Now, motor has seized and they wont move. I wouldnt recommend them to anyone. They are expensive and a hassle. Yes, they look good when they work, but....
