I’m with you on preventing infections🙌🏻, I use Sanex ph neutral shower gel to wash both my stump and liner then air dry both. To prevent liner rash or chafing whilst exercising I use Lanacane anti chafing gel or the alps 5.0 gel (amputeeOT advises) 👍🏻. I use the Ossur isopropyl spray too 😉 but my prosthetist gave me a lil tip that if you run out or forget your spray, to use hand sanitizer gel or foaming hand wash (they use in public toilets) and that will help ease you into your socket easily. Great post Chris! Theres so many ampies that aren’t told how to clean and look after their stump and liner properly. They will really appreciate this post 🤗👌🏻

Thank you Chris. I lost my leg 4 weeks ago, and have much to learn. The first operation was below the knee, but they decided to go above the knee 4 days later due to infection. I'm watching videos like yours to learn more, but truth is I don't know if I will ever be able to afford a prosthetic leg. They cost quite a lot in my country, and It would take me a long time to save up for it. But it's better to be informed and keep a positive outlook.

Hi Mikkos, thank you for then message my friend, I appreciate you following and commenting on the channel. It was started for people like us, if it helps you've made me smile! I'm sorry to hear about your loss, and the complications which followed. It was a similar situation for me, but once I figured out a few things it all got better, and I feel very happy about life today. I really wish the same for you. Never give up, always believe you can do well and be free. There is a solution for all of us, but we need to keep seeking and working for it, with help and support. Which country are you from? Please keep in touch, and I hope to see you on the live streams and join our chats and questions. Hope to hear from you, take care, all the best mate.

Hi Amputeeme! Thanks for the message, sorry it took me a while to respond. I too get blisters, but have learnt to spot the signs early and take off the leg for a day or two. Fresh air and some sun really helps. I found that the main culprit was not washing my limb twice a day, morning as well as evening at bedtime, also the liner, and using the wrong cream on the limb. The best change I made was moving to the Iceross Seal In Liner. It's a super skin friendly liner, ended my issues with blisters and infections. Hope this helps, all the best!

Hi Roshanay, thank you for your message, and for supporting our channel. I am always grateful for viewers who take the time to share their thoughts. Firstly, thank you too for being so loving and caring to someone who is about to go through a life-changing experience. The most important resource your friend will have is your care, love, kindness, and understanding as they recover from the procedure. Second, if you research the facts, find a good support team, follow good practice, implement a pain and infection management plan, and rest well for a good time after the procedure, things will likely work out really well. Infection is mostly a consequence of lack of information, negligence, not caring for the wound, and not resting for a good time post-op. Lastly, a word of hope to you - losing my leg was tough, but in the end it changed my life for the better. It will be up to your friend to try to find meaning in all of this, to re-define their identity, and after healing to engage life again with a sense of curiosity, with a vision of what they want from life. I wish you the best, please let us know how it went, and feel free to join our live-streaming events with real time Q&A's. Take care 🙂

Chris thank you for the video. I am going to be an AK amputee august 3. Infection is the only thing that terrifies me. Possibly losing more then I already am is terrifying. I’m already loosing so much I just couldn’t handle loosing more. Any advice for post surgery care or things to look out for other then obvious signs of infection?

Well I’ve had a lot of trouble with being allergic to a lot of stuff so what I’ve been doing for almost everything the last few years is I mix a spray bottle with 1/3 apple cider vinegar and the other 2/3 with water this killed most mold and fungus it also dissolves and removes dead skin I injured my foot and it became septic there were no open wounds but I ended up losing half of my foot but because of the infection wouldn’t go away and I couldn’t walk on the remaining half of my foot’s we decided to shorten my leg to around halfway below my knee. That got rid of all of the infection. A couple of months later I got my prosthetic leg having had troubles with a lot of the soaps and other things breaking me out I use the the wash cloth they had in the hospital for a while but then they started breaking me out but the wash cloths are made of coconut fibers so you can wash them out and reuse them a bunch of times which is what I ended up doing I spray down my leg liner with the vinegar solution and wipe down the inside of my liner then I do the same with my stump they said to wipe the liner down with alcohol at least once a week i usually do it more often than that sometimes my leg will itch like the hair is growing in I even got bit by a wood tick right at the top of my liner after pulling it out that spot itches for a few weeks but cleaning my stump and liner this way in the last year and I’ve had no problems with skin rashes pimples or anything else and if you take a shower or bath just spray down under your arms and between your legs feet or anywhere else that stinks and the smell will be gone you will smell like vinegar for a few minutes but as soon as it dries the smell is gone I did have problems sweating when it’s hot in the 90 and up so I started waring my shrinker sock or one of the outer ones with the hole in the end that goes over the pin on my liner that keeps me from sweating it will get a little damp but not that much. And as I’ve said I’ve had no troubles with skin rashes skin problems or bad smelling complaints which I use to get all of the time for years because I break out from most soaps

Hi Glen, thank you for the comprehensive information, it will surely help someone with similar struggles. The smelling might be from sweat bacteria between washes? I mostly take a towel when I go somewhere and wipe down the limb with water, and then apply aqueous lotion, very sparingly. Since making this video ive changed my cleaning routine quite a bit, it's really solved all my issues as I now use minimal soaps. I'll make another video about this to share my routine. All the best!

I hope you will advocate for a needle to change blood temperature so people are not losing their limbs because of blood circulation issues

Hi Jane, I saw your post on diabetes.co.uk on this issue. I need to research this topic a little more in depth to understand more about your suggestion, will look into it and see what I can find. If you can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. Thanks for your message, and hope you’ll join us on the live stream tomorrow Sunday 5th at 6pm SA time, 4pm UK.

And keeping your feet warm is the first step to ensure you stay healthy. Warmer feet open up the blood vessels and allow better blood flow, moving heat to every other part of the body to boost energy and protect your immune system.
