In this episode of Repair and Replace, Vance shows how to replace a diaphragm in a Sloan Regal or Royal Manual Flush Valve. This applies to both commercial toilets (water closets) and urinals.
The bypass hole size is extremely important for proper metering of water. Continuous flushing can occur if the bypass hole is blocked. If the hole has been enlarged, it can cause short flushing.

This was super helpful. I live in military housing with this toilet. Flushed one morning and it wouldn’t stop. I googled the issue, found this, and stopped wasting water. It was simply a degraded diaphragm assembly. These are easier to fix than a standard tank unit. Thank you, thank you!

Thanks for the two replys about the bi-pass hole. I soaked every part of the flushometer in degreaser and water for three hours, after disassembling it. I disassembled the diaphragm completely, removing the two plastic rings, and did see two slits in it. After cleaning it and reassembling all parts and pieces the flushometer worked like new. Thanks.

Very helpful video - nice explanation! One suggestion, if you redo this in the future, you might want to mention that when removing / restoring the cap, the pressure in unscrewing it can jiggle the tailpiece, which may then require replacing the O-ring on that tailpiece. It happened to me and I had to make 2 trips to Ferguson - one for the diaphragm and one for the O-ring.
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Todd! That is a great suggestion on the o-ring and its something that would have been good to mention more in these videos. We likely won't be updating the flushometer videos for a little while as we are focused on appliance repairs at the moment. We just finished a huge series on oven and stove troubleshooting kzfaq.info/sun/PLCo9SMjkdWBysYYCcg5xQLiVh_cW0JQvt and we're working on refrigerators next, so that will keep our video team busy for quite a while.

What is the flow rings function located underneath the diaphragm
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. The relief valve and the flow rings slightly restricts the flow and changes the timing of the valve. This is how it is calibrated to achieve a specific gallon per flush. The rubber diaphragm itself is the same for all gpf.

Hi am trying to replace the diaphragm and I have a white relief valve in my toilet (A-15-A). I bought a A-38-A replacement kit and it has a blue relief valve but still has the A-15-A part number. @AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. The A-15-A refers to the diaphragm itself. Using a different color relief valve will change the flush. If you unscrew the diaphragm then use all the old plastic parts and just swap out the new diaphram.

When i flush my toilet, it all gets drained and then runs for about a minute before completely filling up and stopping. Does this mean my bypass hole is starting to get blocked? Or not really because it is not running and never stopping, just flushing for about a minute before filling and stopping which is longer than normal.
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. What is likely happening is that the bypass hole is likely clogged with mineral or corroded rubber from the diaphragm. It's likely not completely blocked but is taking longer than normal to fill the upper chamber, resulting in a long flush. If you try to clean the diaphragm and it doesn't help, then installing a new diaphram of the correct gpf should fix the problem.

Thanks for the uploads. My toilet flush odometer is sweaty and cold to the touch. Also the feeder pipe feels and sounds like water is constantly running thru it. Is this normal? Thanks anyone
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. What you are noticing is condensation. Since there is cold water inside the pipes, its causing water vapor in the air to condense from a vapor into a liquid, which is collecting on the pipe. Generally if the flushometer valve is closed all the way there shouldn't be water running to it. The pipes are connected to the system so there might be water running somewhere else in the line, which you might be hearing.
@Jimfromearthoo7

AMRE Supply I hear and feel when I touch the pipe water running from the feeder pipe coming out of the wall and connecting to the Sloan flush odometer. I’m on 2nd floor of 14 unit apartment build in 1931. Bay Ridge Brooklyn, NY.
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 4 жыл бұрын
@@Jimfromearthoo7 If there's no water coming out of the flushometer at rest, then the sound shouldn't be a concern. If there is water continuously coming out of the valve then the diaphragm is likely not sealing properly.
@Jimfromearthoo7
@Jimfromearthoo7 4 жыл бұрын
AMRE Supply let me reiterate. 1, the Sloan flush odometer is always sweaty. 2, feels cool to touch. 3, it feels and sounds like water is running from the small pipe that feeds the water. No water is leaking. So is their a problem or is this normal? Thank you in advance
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 4 жыл бұрын
@@Jimfromearthoo7 If no water is coming out of the flushometer or if no water is leaking below the flushometer then there is no problem. Sweaty pipes are normal if the water is cold (condensation). The inlet pipe is connected to other pipes so you're likely hearing something else in the system.

I have replace the diaphram, vacuum breaker and handle trying to get the water to stop flowing. What can I check now, since all 3 of those inside pieces are new?
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 8 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching. It's best to clean the valve seat to make sure there is no mineral buildup or anything that might prevent the valve from making a good seal. If any water leaks into the upper chamber, then the valve will not close and water will continue to flow.

@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 4 ай бұрын
@@580outdoors8 If you've installed a new diaphragm, a new valve body and that there is no corrosion or mineral breakup that might prevent the diaphragm from sitting properly on the valve, then you should also check the handle. It is possible that the handle is stuck and is pressing on the relief valve and preventing the valve from resetting.

Hi Tino, thank you for watching. The control stop is a valve. By turning the screw it will push the rubber stopper forward to close the valve. If turning the screw either way does nothing at all, then its possible that the threads are stripped. You can see how to replace it in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bL6RnpZ6rdnJkps.html

I just purchased a new sloan valve kit and installed it into my regal flushometer, but when I turn the water flow on at the control stop it immediately starts flowing water and filling the bowl. It does not shut off unless I turn the control stop off. Does anyone know a solution for this? It's all new parts.

@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 6 жыл бұрын
If you have to constantly hold down the handle or the flush stops, it is probably an indicator that you'll need a new diaphragm. If the bypass hole in the diaphragm is enlarged, the valve will reset too quickly as water rushes into the upper chamber before the valve can completely flush. Did you replace the diaphragm?

Anyone notice that the wrench was being used backwards when tightening the top cap???
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. There is no shortage on debate on if flipping the wrench the other way will increase or decrease the torque. There are times where the additional space to move the wrench requires you to orientate it in a specific way. Other times it doesn't make much of a difference if the torque is low.

On mine at the vacuum breaker on the pipe after done flushing water comes up through the breather holes. Could that be a bad vacuum breaker? Or a blockage in the toilet itself?
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 6 жыл бұрын
If it was a blockage in the toilet, you would notice a very low water flow in the toilet itself. Most likely it is the vacuum breaker. Over time the rubber breaks down sticks together and can restrict the water flow out of the vacuum breaker. Try replacing the vacuum breaker, I've linked the repair: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oZhxoLppveDboKM.html

Thanks for watching. What was the original gpf of the diaphragm and which diaphragm did you install? If the toilet is designed for a higher gpf, and you installed a low gpf diaphram then the flushometer will not run as long, and less water will flow out of it before the valve closes.

@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. You might want to check the valve for any calcium or corrosion that might prevent a good seal. This can be cleaned if needed. If the diaphragm doesn't sit properly, then a small amount of water will leak into the upper chamber and the flushometer will continue to flush.

So i have a short flush. I changed handle, that wasnt the problem. This has got to be the problem correct?
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 5 жыл бұрын
Diaphragms are the most common source of short flushing as the rubber can break down over time, so replacing the diaphram is the best bet in your case.
@exoticcar5482
@exoticcar5482 5 жыл бұрын
That was absolutely the problem. Honestly, I'm surprised you or someone else thought that changing the handle would do anything. The handles on Sloan valves do nothing more than bump the relief valve with a metal rod and the rest of the flushing action is all water pressure
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 5 жыл бұрын
@@exoticcar5482 Even though the diaphragm is the most common solution, the handle is still a source of short flushing and is even mentioned the Sloan manual. Consider a handle that is sticking and doesn't push into the relief valve effectively. If it only partially opens the relief valve, you might see a small release of water leak from the valve without a full flush.
@exoticcar5482
@exoticcar5482 5 жыл бұрын
@@AmreSupply True, but that is a very rare situation considering the simple, reliable mechanics of Sloan handles. You can usually tell a good handle from bad by removing it from the flushometer, looking at the rod, and observing its response to the handle movement. The handle only needs replacement if a. The handle joints and parts inside are so stuck and/or corroded beyond repair or b. the metal rod isn't moving out long enough or with enough force to strike the relief valve. However, in general, these are unusual cases as the gaskets normally keep water out of the handle joint. A vast majority of the time, the issue lies in the more fragile rubber diaphragm. Not saying to not check the handle though, because that's the first thing to rule out. My point is that it is relatively easy to tell if your handle is the problem without spending money on a new handle that may end up being a waste of money if it turns out that the handle wasn't even the underlying issue in the first place. If the bathroom has another flushometer with a working diaphragm, it's even easier as you can temporarily mount the handle from the problematic flushometer to the working one and see if it functions properly. If so, you can instantly rule out the handle as the underlying issue and thus there's no need to get a new replacement handle
@AmreSupply

I agree that handles are not a very common part that needs replacement, but i must give you props to your explanation though, it breaks down the troubleshooting logic very well!

@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 3 жыл бұрын
Hi James, thank you for watching. Its possible that there is either corrosion or a buildup of minerals on the threads. Inspect the threads and the valve seat. Look for any nicks, corrosion or calcium. If there is a mineral buildup then you can vinegar or an acid based cleaner to dissolve it. As well in some cases it can be helpful to clean the threads with a light gauge wire brush.
