Mr. Gautam Tayal, a 64-year-old gentleman from North Delhi, lost his left hand in an industrial accident. He was given first aid and rushed to a nearby hospital. En route to the hospital, his son reassured him about the new advances in medicine and the possibility of hand transplantation if he lost his hand. He learned about Dr. Mohit Sharma, who performed successful hand transplants at Amrita Hospital, Kochi. A few days after the inauguration of Amrita Hospital in Faridabad, Mr. Tayal consulted Dr. Mohit Sharma and his team. Dr. Sharma counselled him regarding the possibility of a hand transplant and immunosuppression and its complications. He explained that, as the patient is a kidney transplant recipient, there is no dilemma of immunosuppression for a unilateral transplant. The team worked tirelessly and gave hope to Mr. Tayal and his family. Months after Mr. Tayal's visit, he received a call from the hospital on December 26, 2023, asking him to rush to the hospital as there was a prospective donor in Thane, Mumbai. The retrieval team departed from Faridabad to Mumbai, which included Dr. Srilekha Reddy, Consultant, Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, to retrieve a hand that belonged to a 40-year-old gentleman who was declared brain dead following a head injury. The donated hand was flown to Faridabad, where the doctors immediately started the procedure to transplant the hand. The marathon surgery lasted 17 hours with the tireless efforts of a 50-member team, including anaesthesia and critical care specialists, orthopaedicians, nephrologists, OT nurses, and technicians.
Mr. Gautam thanked the whole team for giving him a new lease of life.
