I have to comment after watching this video. The nostalgia I get from watching a video from a time period I did not even exist in is so significant I cannot help myself but admire it. The RARE lash up of 2 F40PH's 1 F59PHI and a P42-DC in an OLD livery, is stunning. The WIG WAG CROSSING SIGNAL at 1:06:00 was AWESOME to watch in operation, all the mechanical railroad crossing bells and old railroad crossing equipment, once entering Ventura county around the 50:00 mark. You can notice MULTIPLE Raco and Griswold gate mechanisms, incandescent lights, and even mechanical bells popping up on crossing after crossing. As this corridor has rapidly modernized into 2021 and almost all of these Railroad Crossings, track improvements, and bridges have been made or added. These are some sights you will never see again. - And this does not even include all the old Southern Pacific Locomotives you see, the OLD Metrolink phase 1 Cab cars with K5LA's AND some still having whistles if you look carefully on the top. I can't help myself, this video is stunning and thankfully immortalizes a time of railroading I desperately wish I lived to see. Please give this video a FULL watch. Do not skip around. I loved it. Amazing work, AMAZING editing. Top Notch stuff 100/100

1:08:26 is (I think) the Miramar Inn where we spent our wedding night 40 years ago. Being awakened by trains during the night was an added part of the memory. I only wish I could identify Santa Claus Lane in the video. I agree: the wig wags are the stars of the show.

I used to run this train on the Coast before Amtrak took over in 1986. To and from LAUPT and San Luis Obispo. Great footage brings back great memories of the greatest run ever. The Valley Ventura dispatcher was Jim Gruledge. It was filmed when freight still ran on the Coast. Now days The only freight now is the Gemco to Guadalupe local.

Was seeing those Type G triangular signals, and it put me in mind of that 1979 movie: Disaster on the Coastliner, where they showed those kind of signals along the California Coastal line with Amtrak Trains. But back then, SP had H2 Searchlights. In the 90's, art became reality, when UP put the newer signals in.

I'm rewatching this video and noting changes to the territory. It's amazing how much has changed and how much hasn't. 45:55: Field of Onions on one side, lemons on the other. These are now Marijuana/hemp fields on both sides lol. And the speed is 15.. (Make that 79, but the perpetual crossing orders make that hard to accomplish). I saw you uploaded another video recently and had to swing through your channel RR. Hope your retirement is treating you well!
@radioroger16832 жыл бұрын
Actually I am not retired Yet! The engineer Charlie was the one who retired shortly after the video was shot, Its a rotten shame that FRA regulations no longer allow personal recording devices in locomotives and cab-cars, at the very least they should be allowed to record the trip so if there's a trespasser strike or other incident the engineer and railroad would be better protected against lawsuits

@ 23:10, more or less, is where the MetroLink train hit the UP freight head-on in 2008. The Metrolink train ran a red signal at the point where this train merged back onto the main after letting the freight go by. Also, the first tunnel is right next to the location of the former Spann Movie Ranch. The Manson Family lived there in the late 1960's. And, one more bit of trivia, that same tunnel is featured at the very end of the Hitchcock movie "North by Northwest." Some SoCal railroad trivia for you.

Good clip, particularly liked the GE "thrash" from the train view.What was going on at the level crossing then a bit later where the dispatcher seemed a bit confused as to what train was which (not that the quickfire exchanges are all that easy to understand, at least to this British observer!)?Hopefully this route will make an appearance in the Run8 simulator at some stage...

Next time you see Tommy ask him about the visit to the 'Nudist Camp' in the Cajon Pass area along with Bill Milligan from Hobart ! But you're right. He was a 'Noteable' character. Changing subjects, Tommy had some experience in the movie industry as well as a hog head with ATSF. He's probably deceased by now. Well, most of the people from ATSF I worked with are deceased. I'm next. 37 years ATSF/BNSF. Retired 2015. You can look it up but I remember when the ATSF & the SP tried to merge and they started painted our locomotives with SP Santa Fe. Deal fell through.

Why the hell were they allowed to get THAT close to another northbound train on the same track? what the hell was the dispatcher on when he told the engineer to go past the red signal that CLEARLY told him not to move. did they seriously need 6 engines? Ironically today's Union Pacific is an off shoot of Southern Pacific. Todays Union Pacific Railroad (Mark II) was created through the merger of the UP into Southern Pacific Transportation Company. SP didn't merge into UP. UP merged into SP. However after the merger the Parent company was changed to Union Pacific Corporation. Currently the 4th Version of the Union Pacific name.
@jaanfo38744 жыл бұрын
The dispatcher controls the railroad, not the signals. Signals only tell you what route you're taking and how fast you can go. The dispatcher can, ultimately, authorize a train past a stop signal and stack it in with another train if it's the best way to dispatch them.
