On 7/10 Amtrak was doing work at Penn Station so they decided to do 3 round trip Amtrak trains from and to Grand Central on the first day of Summer of Repairs.

Back in the mid-90s I worked around 124th Street and Park Avenue in Harlem and it got to the point where I used to know all the train schedules for Metro-North just by observing the trains come & Go.

When I rode on this line daily between Tuckahoe and GCT back in the 1970s we would never in 1 million years have dared to railfan on these platforms for fear of our lives… But obviously much has changed in the interim…With much of it being for the better.

I don't know the detailed answer, but from what I've read (and been told on nycrailfan202's channel), they can't get full power when running from the 3rd rail, so they go to diesel as soon as they get out of the tunnels. The old FL9s (and modern DM30ACs on the Long Island Railroad) have the same problem.

Yeah, top speed is only 60mph when running on the third rail. I assume acceleration is also significantly impacted.

Why do the Amtrak Empire Service trains have P42DC full diesel locomotives at the end?
