Date of Travel: 19 September 2019
Class of Travel: Superliner Roomette (First Class)
Cost of Ticket: $551 (one-way)
Links relating to the crash near La Junta:

Other info:
You can't choose whether or not you have a roomette on the upper or lower level. If you want to change what roomette you have, you have to ring amtrak customer services (which I couldn't due to my last minute upgrade)
This train travels 2265 miles taking just over 43 hours. Departure is schedualed for 2:50pm from Chicago daily with arrival into Los Angeles schedualed for 8am two days later.
The Southwest Chief crosses 8 states and experiences 2 timezone changes along the way. From the flat fields of Illanois to the deserts of the southwest, this route truley offers diverse and interesting scenery!

I LOVE the Southwest Chief very much! I have ridden on Amtrak long distance trains a number of times and I love it because sleeping on the train is fun, plus the beautiful scenery! One time, I actually observed a live birth take place on the train, I’m not joking. Back in late March 2019, I was riding the California Zephyr from Davis to Glenwood Springs and on the train, there was pregnant 19 year old girl from SFSU traveling from Emeryville to Denver with her boyfriend. They normally fly home from college for holidays/breaks but because their due date was close (due date was April 5th and they departed on March 29th), they had to use the train since airlines do not allow women to fly in the last 6 weeks of pregnancy. During the ride at 1 AM, the girl’s water broke and the attendant for our sleeping car (Justin Woods, a young guy in his early 20s based in Chicago) volunteered to deliver the baby since he had seen how it was done online before. The girl agreed and Justin did so in which he went into the first aid kit, got his gloves on, then squeezed himself into the roomette to have the girl push while he caught the baby when she was born. The baby ended up being born on the train - a healthy baby girl in a ROOMETTE!!! It was a fabulous story and the girl, her newborn and boyfriend were taken off the train by paramedics at the next railroad crossing. The train was in a remote location between Elko and Salt Lake City at the moment which required a helicopter to meet the train and have her airlifted to the nearest hospital which was more than an hour away (an ambulance can’t drive more than 30 minutes away from it’s base and SLC would take longer than that, so they used a helicopter). As it is, I observed the whole thing as I was holding the girl’s left leg as well as recording this with her boyfriend’s phone. I’ve wondered - if you are female, suppose this happened to you where you (or your wife/girlfriend) suddenly went into labor on an Amtrak train and the train was going across a remote location at the moment. Would you at all be able to tolerate giving birth unmediated, while crammed into a Roomette, on a bed that was not flexible (unlike in the hospital), on a train that speeding up to 90 MPH, the baby’s umbilical cord having to stay attached to you until you got to a hospital (no scissors/clamps on the train), and the person delivering your baby is an Amtrak conductor/attendant with no medical training or license of any kind??? Seriously, this girl was incredibly brave and was lucky that there were no complications, PLUS it only took 20 minutes for her to push the baby out (water broke at 1 AM, and the baby was born at 1:22 AM) What do you think of all this!!!???

Those new equipment and passenger options are going to be "put into play" largely in the northeastern corridor and these long-distance routes should have been terminated YEARS ago as Amtrak has done nothing since inception except cost tax-payers a lot of money.

Rodney.....completely agree with you....train travel should be encouraged as a remedy for economic and environmental reasons. Public transportation is the way to go. Not to mention it is just a wonderful experience! I took the Empire Builder back in 2015 and it was a marvelous journey. My wife and I are planning to take the California Zepher later this year all the way to San Francisco, eat Clam Chowder on Fisherman's Wharf and see some sites, visit family, before returning. I personally would discount and ignore these two boneheads, Purselmer and......(haha!) Truth?! They both sound like men without vision. Not to mention Amtrak represents a drop in the bucket compared to the waste, inefficiency and pork projects that saturate levels of government, the military and throughout the States.

entered this train at Topeka, KS, station a few decades back - not much of a station but rather a platform next to the tracks. Getting on the train in the dark, early in the morning, is not exactly comforting but one gets into the travel mood after sunrise. Loved the whole thing, had to leave at Flagstaff, Az, a zillion hours later. It happened to be Christmas‘ Eve in Flagstaff and the train was a few hours late: no sweat as people could entertain themselves in a dancing car, really!

Thank you Dylan in posting your LD trips with Amtrak. Particular note which I'm sure you are well aware of is that the LA. to Chicago was the famous Santa Fe Super Chief and El Capitan. Truly the royal rails of the west back then. In fact, the lead into Union Station was always through San Bernardino, Pasadena with the San Gabriel Mtns and charm of the east side. For us old-timers it was the way to go in class and adventure.

You did a great job with that video--lots of information for people who have never been on Amtrak on that route. And thank you for appreciating the good things about Amtrak, and not just finding fault with it. I have actually traveled that route (Southwest Chief) several times. I've gone the distance to California (I live on the east coast), but I usually get off at Lamy in New Mexico--which is the nearest station stop for Santa Fe. Yes, New Mexico is beautiful. And wow, I've never seen the station at Lamy so lively! I'll have to look for some of your other videos.

Thanks! I always think with Amtrak you have to go into the journey in the right frame of mind. You wouldn't expect to take a long distance train and find really modern coaches and the trains to be always running on time. I always think Amtrak do a good job with the resources they have available to them (especially considering all of the long distance routes loose money and are subsidised by the govenment.)

Superb footage and commentary of a journey I've certainly not made. Thank you for leaving the film to speak for itself; the on-screen captions are just enough. The cameo views of small towns in, eg, NM were brilliant. Although Europe does not lack open space, what strikes the European viewer is the vastness of the terrain on both sides of the train (and this is only a relatively small part of the USA). I'd love to make this trip at some point.

11:55 - yes! This is small town america. Where I live in Minnesota, most of our county bldgs, post office, dept stores were built after ww2. Before that they were all farm towns where the train stopped to pick up corn, etc. I like living in the country. It's slow, peaceful, quiet .... Everyone knows everyone else.

I took the southwest chief from Albuquerque to LA, about 6 years ago. Left Albuquerque about 1:00 and hit Arizona about Sunset. San Bernadino at sunrise it a truly a beautiful site. Seeing all the graffiti in the LA river was a disappointment. Taking the commuter to San Diego was spectacular, seeing the ocean. I had a sleeper, and I must say the meals were pretty good. Thanks for the video

So very cool to see Bent County Correctional Facility featured in your vlog. Didn’t know there was a Bent County in Colorado. My husband’s ancestors settled in La Junta, CO and built Bent’s Old Fort. Wasn’t aware that there was a county named after William Bent until I saw it in your video and then searched online. William Bent is my husband’s great great great great grandfather.

Hearing Dylan's Huddersfield accent at 2:58 threw me off! Strange to think that my dad originally would've sounded something similar to that! (He's from Mancs originally but living in and having his family in London has softened his accent a lot)

Song playing in the background around 2:00 is “Thank God I’m a Country Boy” by John Denver. It’s used by the Baltimore Orioles during the 7th inning stretch during every home game, and is strongly associated with the team by the fans. Funny to be hearing it play outside of that context

You Guys are Lucky to have taken such a beautiful scenic route. Last time I rode Amtrak was from Chicago to Austin Tx. The only "Scenery" I had was through every junk yard and scrap heap the rails could produce

I've had the pleasure of riding along several very scenic Amtrak routes. The California Zephyr between Chicago and San Francisco is lovely, especially in the Rocky Mountains and the Sierras. And the Empire Builder, from Chicago to Seattle also has beautiful scenery in areas of the Great Plains, in western Washington, and in the Cascades. The route from Seattle to San Francisco is also beautiful, but I can't remember the name of it.

From 24:18 to about 24:30 you can see a lovely, restored railroad hotel called La Castaneda. Its sister hotel, restored by the same couple, is called La Posada in Winslow, AZ, and was a station stop passed while sleeping between Albuquerque and Needles. Both are worth checking out!

Chicago Union Station has gone through some changes over the years, as recorded in films including "The Silver Streak" that showed the station before it was restored to its former glory, as seen in "The Untouchables" that was set in 1930, nearly 60 years before the restoration, with key parts of the station featured in several scenes. I was delayed twice on the Southwest Chief, both times just outside of Lamy, NM. On the #4 leaving Albuquerque, we hit some boulders on the track that severed a compressed air line, and limped into Lamy where we waited for a replacement locomotive. On the #3 coming into Lamy, we hit some livestock on the track, and had to stop to remove the remains of the animals from the rolling stock. Both were routine, and though power was shut off , the worst inconvenience was having no cellular data service in Lamy. (AMTRAK had been testing free Wi-Fi hotspots, but the execution was poor, nothing but Verizon Mi-Fi hotspots similar to one that I carried with me were in the attendant's room, with no concern for coverage.) It's a bit more grim knowing that human lives were lost. I've seen those old Pullman cars parked in Albuquerque several times, and once they were hooked up to a locomotive as we waited. I doubt that they're for personal use, more likely a business that rents them out.

Another great review! Love your content. Next time you're back in North America I recommend trying out the California Zephyr. It too starts at beautiful Chicago Union Station and terminates in the SF Bay Area via the Rockies. Also, the Pacific Surfliner (the blue trains visible as you arrive in Los Angeles) to San Diego is a great route. Terrific ocean views. VIA Rail up in Canada is also supposed to have great scenery.

(Hopefully no crashes on this one....big bummer on that..) Amtrak has said they're going back to dining car service after the middle of May, so I'm hopeful =D The roomette looked very pleasant, and I can't wait to try it out. Thanks again!

I went with Amtrak once from Tampa to Chicago and it was great! Tons of head and legroom. I slept in my chair. No problems whatsoever. And they even had TVs installed up top so you could watch if you wanted to. Of course, it took a lot longer than a plane but it was traveling in style and luxury compared to air travel. Conversely, I took a Greyhound bus once on a longer trip and it was a Nightmare. They stop every fifteen minutes to drop off and pickup people. And it’s crowded and unpleasant. I felt like a Sardine and was exhausted when I finally arrived, due to lack of sleep! Never again! But Amtrak was great and so smooth and luxurious! I really enjoyed it! Train Travel is the best but because people are in such a rush everyone flies. People have no patience anymore. Their loss!

I've traveled Amtrak for years, and never seen them hit anything bigger than a feral hog in Texas (which we did stop for). Sad to hear about the car's occupants. Great video. Thanks for posting. If you haven't ridden it, you should try the Texas Eagle (which merges with the Sunset Ltd.) to LA. It's a bit longer, but a spectacular ride through TX, NM and AZ along the border. It's our favorite route.
