Amtrak Train 20 Washington Union Station Power Change Montage

Amtrak Train 20, the northbound Crescent, swaps P42DC diesels #181 and #14 for new ACS-86 electric #604. Also making an appearance is ACS-86 #620, new MARC MP36PH-3C #30 and a couple of amtrak switchers pulling regional trainsets out of the stub terminal.

What folks forget is that the NEC is electrified; however, some tracks out of it are not (MARC Camden line, for example). That means power changes due to the transition from electrified to non-electrified or vice-versa. (MARC has the same issue.)

This is great, especially seeing all those switches, even though compressed by the telephoto effect, and the second-hand switchers. My real question is how you got out there, because they normally don't allow it and didn't 8 years ago.

If you are on a through train getting its power changed you can hang out at the end of the platform.

I wish I could prop my camcorder and tripod down on the platforms there. I’d shoot all day but I think local personnel their would frown on it

At 0:20, 1:53, 6:45, and 8:53, who are the people running around in the little golf cart-like contraptions? The railroad employees (at 3:13 and 3:47) drive very distinctive yellow or orange vehicles. Anyway, with so much train traffic round, seems like a mighty risky way of crossing those tracks.

Don't worry, the train traffic in Union Station is very slow, and they probably are being careful. But, nice observation!

Where do they turn the locos around? Wye? Turntable?

There's a turning wye in the north-west portion of the yard.

The ACS 64 is bi directional. The diesels have a Y up the tracks.

I don't know if it's still there, but there also was a short turntable to the side of and behind the Commissary building at the Ivy City engine terminal facility.

So good but if Amtrak had enough P32ACDM it would have been able to stay on the whole train from New Orleans to New York Penn with a power mode change at Secaucus Junction for North River tunnel 750 volts third rail

I'd rather have a 8600hp electric with a top speed of 125 than a 3200hp diesel with a top speed of 110.

Jersey Mike's Rail Videos good point since 8600 horsepower electric locomotive has quicker acceleration than the 3200 horsepower diesel locomotive.

Couldn't do a engine change in Secaucus , Tom much congestion and no where to service the diesels .

it does not matter the horsepower, as the official designation in ACS-64

It's called Wikiality. If enough people use a term that becomes the term. Example The HHP8 was originally the HHL8. In the US we use HP not kilowatts for locomotive power. If you support America you'll use 86.
