Dedicated with love and appreciation to the deeply-missed LEONARD NIMOY and DeFOREST KELLEY.
- - -
James T. Kirk has died saving the crew and passengers of the U.S.S. Enterprise-B from a spatial anomaly. Now Dr. McCoy is mourning his absent friend alone in a San Francisco bar, his only companions a bottle of bourbon and his own personal torment. Enter: Spock...having returned to Earth after hearing of "the incident." Spock, of course, is not allowing himself to become emotional over the loss of his best friend--the opposite of what McCoy is going through. Ironically, or perhaps fittingly, they each need what the other has, and they come together for a quiet, introspective conversation as each man, in his own way, helps the other come to terms with this devastating loss.
- - -
AN ABSENT FRIEND" is the first-ever Star Trek fan film to use artificial intelligence exclusively to generate all of the voices, utilizing ElevenLabs' speech synthesis algorithms. And if anyone is wondering "Is it legal to use A.I. to generate the voice of a deceased actor?" the answer is currently yes, according to California Civil Code § 3344, Section 990, paragraph (n):
"This section shall not apply to the use of a deceased personality's name, voice, signature, photograph, or likeness, in any of the following instances:
1) A play, book, magazine, newspaper, musical composition, FILM, radio or television program, other than an advertisement or commercial announcement not exempt under paragraph (4)."

Wow. You actually covered a plot hole that’s been eating at me for a while. When Scotty appeared in TNG and first heard the name Enterprise his reaction was thinking that Kirk took the ship out of space dock to find him. Why would he say that if he was there when Kirk “died?” Because he was still holding out hope that Kirk was alive and would appear again at any point. I love it! This is now the second fan project I’m accepting as my own personal canon, first being Star Trek Continues.

The fact that Scotty said that he didn't believe that Kirk wasn't dead from the nexus incident brings Relics full circle when he said "I'll bet it was Jim Kirk who pulled the old girl out of mothballs to come find me!" figuring the captain cheated death again, negating the early Generations plot and setting things right.

Keep in mind that McCoy was very angry and drunk at the beginning...and he does mellow out quite a bit as they talk. I think, when Spock first arrives, McCoy is looking for a punching bag, and Spock was the most convenient one after the bartender and the bottle of bourbon.

If William Shatner has a social media presence, you should show him this. This is a masterpiece, literally
@jonathanlane1377
@jonathanlane1377 Ай бұрын
Thanks. I don't know how Shatner would feel about this, TBH. On the one hand, he embraces the potential of A.I. On the other hand, while I did reach out to the Nimoy estate, and they didn't reject my request for permission, they didn't want to spend the billable hours putting everything down in a contract either. So it was just a "We're not going to stop you, but we're not going to deal with it either." And De Kelley had no children or grandchildren, so his right of publicity terminated upon the death of his widow in 2004. Shatner has said he'd welcome living on as A.I. as long as he or his surviving family were compensated. Although I did make that offer to the Nimoy estate (to pay to license Leonard Nimoy's voice), they weren't interested...likely because I couldn't afford what it would cost the estate to write up the agreement. So I'm not entirely certain how Shatner would feel about this. He might love it, or he might think that it sets a precedent that fans will someday clone his voice or visual likeness without paying for it.

Sadly, DeForest Kelley was the first to pass away back in 1999 at the age of 79. I miss him and Jimmy the most of all, as they both were two of the sweetest, friendliest actors to the fans. I stood next to Jimmy waiting for our omelettes at a convention near Baltimore in the 1980s, and it was like no one else was there. Jimmy's entire attention was focused on me as we chatted. And he was like that with every fan who came to see him. As for De, he actually saved my friend's life once at a convention in New York City when a crowd following him almost knocked her over the edge of a mezzanine that would have resulted in a 20 foot fall onto the marble floor of the hotel lobby. He grabbed her arm and said, "Whoa, there, young lady. We don't want any accidents today." True story!

@jonathanlane1377 there will be if you can find a way to monetize it. Filmation 70's look, very good script, convincing voices. Maybe you can contact someone at paramount. This is much different from star trek continues insomuch as they have no cartoons going so you are not competition. That's a huge advantage. They might decide allow you to monetize for a piece of the action if you put a big fat ad for their next star trek show or movie at the end with a special thanks. Pour honey all over it. I've been in tv /movies for 40 years. In.my humble opinion it's absolutely worth a call. Could be real dough because unlike most, this really is pretty good. This is the kind of story that Short Treks could have done....but you did it better. Keep 'em coming!!!
@jonathanlane1377
@jonathanlane1377 Ай бұрын
The Short Treks were only intended to get a little more use out the existing sets and beef up the available CBS All Access Star Trek content with more icons on the screen while not spending too much money on the budget. The Very Short Treks were intended to be simple animated gags, although many of them fell kinda flat. In the end, I'd like to think this little fan film stands on its own without the need to compare it to anything CBS Studios produced.

This was a brilliant production and something I believe should have been made while the actors were still with us because it was a conversation we deserved to see! I'm officially accepting it as an epilogue to "Generations" because the acting and dialogue fit like a well tailored suit.

My God, this is... like traveling in time back to the wonderful year of 1993...!! This conversation is very good and well thought, full of bits of stories from so many old trips, like the characters would probably do in a random conversation...!! Sometimes I swear I could see Dee and Lenny's figures, like this was REALLY done, taped and filmed or recorded...!! I hope someday this can be turned into a film with AI characters, like Otoy have recently done in some videos!! Thank you so much!! You've made my night...!! I'll sleep well today, and maybe even dream of old starships and crews that exists no more...!! 🥹🥲 Again, thank you so much...!! ❤

This is awesome Jonathan. Great seeing these characters dealing with the loss of their friend. I had always hoped they would have done a movie of Spock finding a way to save Kirk. He did so much to help Captain Pike. I know he would have found a way.

This was actually....brilliant!! I did find a violation of continuity. In 2293-2294 Sulu was only Captain of the Excelsior for 3-4 years. His log entry in TUC is proof of that. TUC took place in late 2293 and his log entry said he had been spent 3 years as Master of this vessel....and not Captain for 12 years.
