The newest video in my editor reacts to series. This week I'm watching and reacting to Invincible for the first time.
Mark must prove he's become the hero he's always wanted to be by stopping an unstoppable force.
An adult animated series based on the Skybound/Image comic about a teenager whose father is the most powerful superhero on the planet.
Invincible is an adult animated superhero television series created by Robert Kirkman for Amazon Prime Video and premiered on March 25, 2021. Based on the Image Comics series of the same name by Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley,[4] the show follows 17-year-old Mark Grayson and his transformation into a superhero under the guidance of his father Omni-Man, the most powerful superhero on the planet. During his transformation, Mark finds himself struggling between his personal life and superhero duties, where he will be forced to prove that he can be the hero that his father is. The series stars Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh, and J. K. Simmons[5] as the Grayson family, while the rest of the cast serve as recurring characters.
Following its release, the series received widespread acclaim from critics and audiences, with praise for its animation, action sequences, story, writing, voice acting, emotional weight, and faithfulness to the comics.[6] In April 2021, ahead of the first-season's finale, Amazon renewed the series for a second and third season.[7] The second season is set to premiere on November 3, 2023.[8] On July 21, 2023, Amazon released a prequel special titled Invincible: Atom Eve.
Mark Grayson / Invincible (voiced by Steven Yeun):[12] The eponymous main character. After gaining his powers at 17 years old, Mark discovers the harsh realities of being a superhero while struggling to define himself. He is shown to have a berserker side when fighting the Flaxans and Machine Head's villains which is revealed to be a Viltrumite trait.
Debbie Grayson (voiced by Sandra Oh): Mark's mother and Nolan's wife. Debbie is an experienced realtor, once long adjusted to being a superhero's spouse, before entering into a drunken spiral of depression following her husband's betrayal at the end of the first season.
Nolan Grayson / Omni-Man (voiced by J.K. Simmons):[13] Mark's father and Debbie's husband. Born on the planet Viltrum to a super-powered alien race known as the Viltrumites, Omni-Man's parents died in his youth before he joined the Viltrum Empire's intergalactic expansion several thousand years ago. After arriving on Earth 20 years before the series, Omni-Man is considered the most powerful superhero on the planet with a civilian identity of a rich travel writer named Nolan Grayson.
Samantha Eve Wilkins / Atom Eve (voiced by Gillian Jacobs as a teen/adult, Jazlyn Ione as a preteen, and Aria Kane as a child): A matter/energy manipulating superheroine. Formerly a member of the Teen Team and new Guardians roster, she quits after her ex-boyfriend Rex Splode cheats on her with Dupli-Kate. Struggling to find self-meaning, she chooses to help people directly with humanitarian actions.
William Clockwell (voiced by Andrew Rannells): Mark's best friend and civilian confidant.
Global Defense Agency: A clandestine organization that organizes global superhero responses and utilizes advanced technology in expediting their recovery or resuscitation after death.
Cecil Stedman (voiced by Walton Goggins): Director of the GDA who possesses a long-range personal teleporter and inducts Invincible at the start of his hero career.
Donald Ferguson (voiced by Chris Diamantopoulos): A high-ranking GDA agent who serves directly under Cecil Stedman and is in charge of overseeing the secret projects meant to incapacitate or kill Nolan, only to die in a massive explosion in a futile attempt to kill Nolan.
Guardians of the Globe (new roster): Heroes who were formerly of the Teen Team merged with other experienced heroes with diverse skill sets.
Rudolph "Rudy" Connors / Robot (voiced by Zachary Quinto and Ross Marquand)
Rex Sloan / Rex Splode (voiced by Jason Mantzoukas)

The thing that I absolutely love the most about thie finale is that the person who actually stopped Nolen was Debbie. Slowly, over the course of their relationship, she's the one that changed him just enough the he wasn't just waring a mask any more, he really did love her and Mark in a way he didn't know he was capable of before he came to Earth. Another just amazing detail in this episode is how when Mark goes to ask his mom if she wants a pizza he's flying, and the second he sees her crying he stops and starts walking around because she's a constant reminder of his humanity.

Your last sentence kinda reminds me of Superman, but backwards. In Smallville, Clark always rejected the fact that he wasn’t human. This was the greatest reason why his powers were limited in the show and couldn’t fly. It wasn’t until he finally accepted that he is a kryptonian that he finally was able to fly.

The real sad and dark part is that despite all this Omni man is still probably the nicest viltrumite compared to the rest of his people this whole thing is just him having a emotional breakdown due to being conflicted with his sense of duty and the family he came to love. When Nolan called Debbie a pet. I don’t think he meant like he viewed as like a lowly animal he meant more like he knows that he’ll outlive her so while he does love her he isn’t too attached.

@@Dark__Thoughts That’s referring to physiology. Dude I meant that Nolan is the nicest pure blooded Viltrumite that was RAISED as Viltrumite. Mark was RAISED on Earth and lived a normal human life until like what a few months ago. No other Viltrumite would’ve treated Mark and Debbie like a normal family like he did for years.

Hard to compare. Mark obviously loved Nolan, he idolized him and wanted to be like him. It's like when you're in a relationship and discover your partner might be cheating. You don't actually want to believe it, that there's another reason for it, that things could be salvaged. You don't really want the truth to be the truth so you go through a phase of denial first, because accepting the truth would hurt, a lot.

Debbie’s crying was so raw. I really felt bad for her. And I couldn’t imagine going through that train scene from Mark’s perspective. I can’t even watch it. How horrible is it that Omni made Mark kill them with his body so Mark bears the guilt. Awful! You were great at predicting what they were going to say. I can’t wait for the next ones.

Pretty sure the laced water is basically how their stealth tech on their soldiers works as well. If you weren't affected by that chemical, you'd see them normally, but those who are affected cannot. I'm actually not sure if Nolan is going to get "help" from his home planet, even though he might go there. But I think it might be more for self reflection or something? Because as fucked up as he is, I can still sympathize a little bit with him. He grew up in a world that once genocided half of their own population for eugenic purposes and became a massive spacefaring empire. He literally had no other concept of life than that, that the strong rule over the weak. However, when he reached Earth, and met Debbie, she taught him a completely different perspective, one that is basically the polar opposite to what he grew up to believe. He started to value things he didn't even knew were important, and they became important to him too. However, that's also why he hoped Mark would never get his powers, because then he could just wait until he and Debbie die naturally for him to continue his plan to conquer Earth for his people. That's why he reacted so weirdly when Mark got his powers, he knew he couldn't wait, because Mark would live just as long as him, which according to another comment could be up to 100.000 years. His couple decades on Earth are literally nothing compared to his lifespan, it's kinda like the opposite to Red Rush who perceives everything around him in slow motion, which is in contrast to the many potential thousands of years he already had spent in the Viltrum empire. And since he believes that this fate of Earth is inevitable, he started to set things in motion, by killing the guardians of the globe, which would've been the strongest resistance on Earth he could've faced. As he said to Debbie, Mark getting his powers "changes things". There's several moments of Nolan throughout the first season where we can see him struggle with himself and the whole situation, including his little drops of tears when fleeing into space. Even Alen acknowledged three whole times that it is super weird for him to just leave. He could've conquered Earth alone with ease. He basically genocided most of the Flaxans all by himself, probably over the course of a few decades, when he went through their portal. My guess is he might try to go to Viltrum to remind himself of his mission, as if Debbie and Mark infected him with things he shouldn't care about. Definitely makes me curious where the story goes and also where Nolan will position himself when the rest of his people threaten Earth and consequently his family. He's certainly a very layered character. Definitely watch Attack on Titan (subbed not dubbed) at some point if you like highly layered & complex stories, just don't look up anything, not even images, because it's easily the most spoiler heavy show. There's also an underdog show that needs some attention, Silo, which unfortunately doesn't receive the attention it deserves because it is on Apple's streaming service.

To give a perspective of time for Omni-Man: When Omni-Man crushed Red Rush's head, it lasted less than a second but felt like hours to Red Rush. Omni-Man has the opposite problem. According to Comic Vine, no Viltrumite is ever stated to pass the mark of 100,000 years old. Applying the ratio of a Vitrumite living to 80,000 years and a human living to 80 years. 80,000 yrs / 80 yrs = a factor of 1,000 Same factor ratio by human standards - 80 years / 1,000 = 0.08 year Since 1 year = 365 days 0.08 x 365 days = 29.2 days So 80 years to a Viltrumite feels approximately like 29.2 days to a human. Debbie was already an adult when Nolan met her. Her entire life would feel like a mini vacation to him. It was Debbie's short lifespan that made her feel more like a "pet" to Nolan. Nolan also wished Mark never got Super Powers. I think Nolan hoped for both Debbie and Mark to die of old age before carrying out his mission on Earth. Once Mark's powers developed, Nolan knew he was unable to wait it out for Mark to die of old age. So Nolan began his mission in episode 1 - starting with killing the Guardians of the Globe.

Episode wraps up aaaaaand, que the upbeat Invincible main theme we get at the end of every episode. Oh no, we're not getting it this time? OK, I get it, A LOT of people are dead, more so than usual. Also, this probably the only time Nolan has told Mark the truth his entire life, he really has no idea who his father is, and that's another sad aspect about all of this. You asked will Nolan ever be redeemed. I've already read his story so I won't spoil anything but it reminds me of a trope in television and print medium about can a Nazi ever be truly redeemed? The answer is obviously no, because they're a f*cking Nazi, the trashiest subhuman degenerates in existence and Viltrumites are space Nazis essentially. Again won't spoil Nolan's story, but lets say it does take some interesting turns before it inevitability ends. Because at the end of the day, the only way for Nazis to truly redeem themselves, is to give their lives for that redemption, because so long as they live they are a slap in the face to everyone they have harmed regardless of how remorseful they are.

Just such an insanely fucked up episode. I don't care what they do with Omni Man, there is no redemption for that. Maybe he becomes a 'good guy' (I haven't read the comic, I have no idea), but nothing he could do would make up for that train scene.

What he did this episode is nothing compared to what he did during the time of his empire's war effort. He probably helped conquer worlds for hundreds if not thousands of years already. Yet, his little few 20 years or so on Earth completely challenged his view on the universe and what he thought was important. I don't know how you cannot see & acknowledge that.

I still like "The Tick" (2018) a lot better than this show. This show seems like just another generic edgelord, grimdark cynicism porn that occasionally throws in cliché schmaltz to convince people that there is actual depth to it all. When they go into those "intense" speeches, I'm reminded of Buffy when she said to The First: "I get it, you're evil!" I can think of a LOT of storylines that handle this sort of subject matter better. One relatively recent example for me is "Dark Nights: Death Metal The Secret Origin", which is about Superboy Prime (who Homelander, Omni-Man, etc. are pretty much ripping off). I don't want to say any more to avoid spoilers.

As someone who read the comics its the opposite of cynicism. The moral of it all is marks humanity is what's invincible his hope. He maintains it no matter what despite the tragedy he witnesses on an almost daily basis. Omni-mans cynicism and nihilism is wrong and that is made clear.
