Hello, and thank you for watching.
Today’s topic: An Actor Prepares, Stanislavski, and Acting for Magicians
A simple guy commented:
“Although Konstantin Stanislavski was a theatre theorist, his works are extremely valuable for magicians. I have learned so much by reading his books. I was wondering if you could review some of them.”
I asked, “Is there one of his books in particular that made an impact on you?”
One of them is: "An actor prepares." Thanks.
“A magician is an actor playing the part of a magician.”
- Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin
It’s about believability
Konstantin Stanislavski
Born: January 17, 1863 - August 7, 1938, Moscow, Russia
Best known for developing the system or theory of acting called the Stanislavsky system or Stanislavsky method.
An Actor Prepares the first of Konstantin Stanislavski's books on acting, followed by Building a Character and Creating a Role.
An Actor Prepares is the diary of a fictional student named Kostya during his first year of training in the Stanislavski system.
Kostya and his fellow students have little to no experience in acting.

I agree, I never thought about acting as a "Magician" but this is accurate - this is true, so true - If the spectator "believes" what I am saying during me performing an effect, it is because I made them "Believe" because of "Acting" - Brilliant

I've said many times that magic is nothing without the performance, something all to many people totally ignore now, much to the detriment of the art.

I'm an actor who finally took up card magic two years ago because I've been fascinated since childhood. I truly believe it's presentation that takes someone to the next level as a magician. I'm a hobbyist at this point, but I've also thought of how to incorporate my writing background as well. So many greats like Ricky Jay were also good storytellers. My acting training background is in Meisner technique, but I don't really think his book is the best way to soak up his teachings, but there is a nice documentary on KZfaq about him: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mamjm8Wkp83ReJ8.html

Ricky Jay is one of our all time greats. I agree it is presentation that takes our magic to the next level. Magic is a demanding art form. The magician must be a proficient actor. He must also master his material write a compelling script and be his own director. Ricky Jay did it all with astonishing results
