The Bontrager RIDEtime Elite is a unique offering that fills that void, with a retail price of $69.99 and ANT+ connectivity. If you’re a Strava or data junky, the RIDEtime Elite may not be for you as it offers no GPS tracking and cannot connect to a computer to upload ride data. Instead, the RIDEtime Elite has ANT+ connectivity which means you can view your real-time power data, heart rate, cadence, speed as well as control compatible Bontrager lights. The large and clear display can easily be configured to display upto 3 data items at a time, or cycle through the lower display fields. Without a color touch screen or GPS, the RIDEtime Elite utilized a simple coin-style CR2032 battery that offers long runtime. Does the computer capture what makes basic cycling computers so attractive and combine it with modern connectivity? We’ll find out.
One of the most striking things about the RIDEtime Elite computer is just how sleek it is. Without the need for GPS or a large rechargeable battery, the computer is only between ¼ inch to ½ inch (at the center) thick with the large screen taking most of the computer face. The bezel on the screen is narrow except for the bottom to accommodate a button and the logo display. With only a 28g weight, the computer feels well built yet slim enough to store in a pocket. Attached to the out-in-front mount, the computer also looks modern and gives your bike a professional appearance.
The display can show up to 3 data fields at a time: large primary display on top and two smaller fields on bottom corners. The primary top display can be configured to show any of the sensor data values: speed, cadence, heart rate or power. The bottom display has a dual view option to also show any combination of the sensor data fields or show the avg/max speed/cadence values. All other data fields are only shown on the bottom of the display as a single item. The 'scan' mode also cycles through all available bottom fields...

Here are the instructions (it's on the last page of manual above the night mode section): [1] Hold the front button for 5 seconds until you see the 'Clear Data' screen [2] Release button, then pick yes/no (I believe this will clear active riding stats except odometer) [3] Then you'll see the "Clear Service" prompt where you want to pick "YES" to eliminate the blinking wrench icon.

I have the Ridetime mount for the Blendr system which essentially is the flat mount like the one provided with the Elite computer. One difference though - it covers the back button making it inaccessible without removing the computer from its mount. After setup, thats no big deal, unless you need to activate night mode and the backlight. Crazy !

A method of calibration My device was off by about +.6 of a mile every14 miles. This was after setting the wheel size to 700c:45 (The actual size on the bike), I believe the device just uses a look up of some sort to feed actual MM wheel size to the mileage computer based on the 700c:45. This was not close enough for me :) So to get around this I use the custom wheel size entry to set a smaller size wheel in mm. A smaller size reduces the mileage that is computed. This last ride was about 14 miles and now I am about -.2 rather than +.6. Started: 700cx45 = 2242mm Last: custom = 2155 mm This probably affects your speed computation as well, just not as noticeable?
@TheSweetCyclists
@TheSweetCyclists 3 жыл бұрын
That's interesting. Did you try to actually measure the wheel circumference using a tape measure or string? Maybe your tires have some slight variation that is adding to the offset. I believe the wheel size is only used for speed / distance if you use a speed sensor otherwise the GPS data is used for both.

I don't have a Trek bike, so I used Bontrager's separate sensors instead (www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/equipment/bike-accessories/bike-computers-gps/bike-computer-sensors-accessories/bontrager-interchange-digital-combo-sensor/p/11323/?colorCode=black). Good question. We don't have an Apple watch to confirm, but based on other people's comments on forums you might need another app to broadcast the HR data to the bike computer. The Bontrager and nearly any other GPS computer can use a variety of bike sensors - you don't have to buy a Bontrager specific one.

Did you enter the sensor pairing mode and get a confirmation that sensor was found? The blinking light on the sensor just indicates you have it positioned correctly relative to the magnetic on the wheel. You may need to re-enter the pairing mode via the configuration menu.

There are two setup menus - "primary setup" (language / bike type / time format / time / display units / weight / age / gender / wheel circumference) and what Bontrager calls "advanced setup" (sensor pairing / light pairing / display configuration). It's a single press on the rear button to enter primary setup, and a 5 second press to enter advanced setup - holding the rear button exits out of either menu.

@TheSweetCyclists
@TheSweetCyclists 4 жыл бұрын
Good question. We don't have the combination to try it out, but I'm pretty sure the answer is no. The RIDEtime Elite computer itself has no bluetooth connectivity or GPS so you can't connect it to a phone or extract any data logs. The Duo Trap S will transmit the speed/cadence to your Apple Watch/computer via bluetooth so you could use that in conjunction with Strava to track your ride. You wouldn't get any power/heart rate data unless those also had the ability to connect via bluetooth to other devices. If you want higher end connectivity features, it may be worth looking at Bryton GPS computers or what Garmin/Wahoo has to offer.
@sierra7534
@sierra7534 2 жыл бұрын
Dumb question but you seem to be extremely helpful - I'm buying the DuoSport S for my new Trek bike and was wondering if I even need this bike computer or if there's a free iPhone app I can use to read the data? I can't really find anything online about it. Also, do you have the ability to turn your front and rear lights off with this computer? I don't want daytime running lights but would love to be able to turn on both front and rear lights with the press of a button at night.
@TheSweetCyclists
@TheSweetCyclists 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if Bontrager offers a cell phone app. Many of the cellphone apps can show you speed using GPS signal, so you don't even need a sensor. I do recommend using a bike computer instead of your phone - they are cheaper / smaller / more weather resistant on a bike. The RIDEtime Elite automatically turns the lights on/off (on as soon as you start moving - and off after a few minutes of not moving) but no explicit on/off button. I believe the higher-end Garmin computers have more ways to control and view battery status of connected lights though.

My computer came with sensors. I think you bought the wrong kit. You can buy it with or without sensors. It would make sense if you lost your computer that you wouldn't want to purchase the sensors too so you can buy just the computer. The same would hold true for the sensors. That's why you are given both options when buying. Check Treks website!
@TheSweetCyclists
@TheSweetCyclists 2 жыл бұрын
Jim, you're correct. The $70 (apparently it's $75 now) version we reviewed was without sensors. At this price point, many GPS computers usually include at least the speed or cadence sensor with the headunit. You're correct, a more affordable headunit only option makes a lot of sense when you already have sensors.

11:45 so it does have a backlight, but what if you just leave it on for both day and night? I have the Ridteime (not the Elite model) and like it but I'm buying another bike and would kinda like to have a way to see it at night as I do lots of night riding..I'm thinking maybe there is some little LED light I could find on Amazon which would do the job. Too bad you didn't show it backlight in the dark.
@TheSweetCyclists
@TheSweetCyclists Жыл бұрын
To clarify, it's a manual backlight that only stays on for 5 seconds when "night mode" is active and a button is pressed. The light doesn't stay on the entire time as that would drain the battery. There are other cycling computers with auto back lights based on light sensors or time zones that are better suited for nighttime riding (see the Bryton Rider computers for example).
@zzubuzz
@zzubuzz Жыл бұрын
@@TheSweetCyclists Good answer although I was hoping it would stay on when it senses darkness. I just got done minutes ago installing the Duotrap S, made sure the sensors are correct and also syncing my 2 Bont. lights, it did all of that. But it is perhaps better we don't drain the battery, BUT..I will scour Amazon for some kind of tiny LED light I can aim at the screen. Any suggestions? Thanks, glad the review was useful for you! The battery on my computer has lasted about 8 months. You can't really turn the computer off which is odd, the computer goes into an 'idle' mode after 10 minutes of non use. The big difference with the RIDEtime and the RIDEtime Elite is that the Elite has ANT+ connectivity letting you connect power meter / cadence / heart rate sensors to it. If you don't think you'll need the additional sensors, you can save a little money with the standard version.

No, I believe the Garmin units have the same capability with more features. The RIDEtime is actually a pretty basic computer, Bontrager just added a lot of nice features to it. As far as Apple Watch connectivity it would depend on your heart rate monitor. Many of them are Bluetooth so you might be able to connect to an app + computer at same time - I would check with heart rate monitor specs.

Debbie, I think what you are doing wrong is continuing to hold the front button down after the clear data screen is shown. Just hold the front button for the ~5 seconds until the 'clear data' screen shows, let go. Toggle the yes/no to what you want, and then press the rear button to confirm. The rear button is a bit awkward to reach.

@TheSweetCyclists

That's correct. The rear button is the 'confirmation' while the front button is more of a 'toggle.' You shouldn't have to use the rear button too often after you've done the setup - unless you want to clear data or turn on the back light. It's one of the less user-friendly aspects of the RIDEtime computer.

Absolutely. With the RIDEtime Elite you can get all the all the sensor readings, but it does not have mapping or GPS functionality. If you want mapping functions, GPS and the ability to upload to Strava or other platforms I would look at Bryton / Wahoo or Garmin computers. They have bundles that include speed / heart rate sensors with the computers.

You need to find the wheel circumference in mm. The best way to do that is just mark a spot on the wheel and ground, then move the bike in a straight line until the same spot on wheel touches the ground again - that distance is the circumference of your wheel/tire combination.

I would check if you are using a compatible sensor. Also, spinning the wheels a few times while the computer is searching for the sensors should help pick it up. We are using Bontrager's interchangeable sensor in the video and it worked well. You just need to dial in the position of the magnet to make sure it reads. @TheSweetCyclists

I didn't have any issues with installing the mount, you just have to slide it over the handlebar. Maybe you're using the wrong shims with it? Per the manual: (A) thin shim with a 31.8mm handlebar, (B) thick shim with a 25.4 or 26.0mm handlebar, (C) no shims with a 35mm handlebar or (D) both shims with a 22.2mm handlebar. No need to remove brakes or other items, it should just slide onto the bars with a little bit of force. Note Bontrager does also offer a Blendr stem attachment option - www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/equipment/cycling-components/blendr-integration/comp-blendr-stem-and-blendr-accessories/bontrager-blendr-ridetime-mount/p/22250/.
