An Aircraft Carrier Under Attack: USS Enterprise at the Battle of the Eastern Solomons

This video reviews archival footage shot on August 24th, 1942 during the Battle of the Eastern Solomons. The legendary USS Enterprise (CV-6) withstood a quick and brutal air attack in which she was hit 3 times by Japanese bombs and had 4 near misses. This dramatic footage shows the carrier's evasive maneuvering and some the damage she received that afternoon. Also included, is more footage of her operating in much the same manner about a month later during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands.

As one who has seen quite a few military films (if for no other reason than I'm retired USN and enjoy history), I am seriously impressed that you found these gems and have made a video with them. I've not seen them anywhere else. Also, very impressed with activities of Big E's crew while under fire and during the damage control efforts. It saddens me that she wasn't preserved as a museum ship. 😔

On the other hand, her name was handed on to the world's first atomic supercarrier (CVN-65), and is due to pass on to a second (CVN-80). And CVN-65 inspired Gene Roddenberry to give the name to his own sci-fi hero ship (NCC-1701), bringing the name Enterprise even more fame than if CV-6 had been preserved as a museum ship.

IMHO it says something about the morale of Enterprise's crew that after the loss of Hornet somebody put a banner over the entrance to her island that said, "ENTERPRISE VS. JAPAN!" (She won, too.)
