An Amazing Figure Woodturned

Everyone loves a beautiful figure... I know I do! Especially when it comes maple flavored with signs of Ambrosia Beetle activity!
I plan on making the most of this chunk of timber, and this is the way it begins. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

That entire plank looks incredible, and those pens highlight the details, very nicely. I imagine you'll use some of that for segmenting. Myself, I enjoy your larger one piece work or any spindle work you do, Rod. Glad to see your regular posting, meaning I hope the demands of life are a bit lighter for you.

Amazing wood grain! Wow! Those pens are awesome! I have seen so many beautiful wood turnings from your shop. Perhaps you might do a pyrography project for variety? I remember you did a butterfly once before. It would be cool to see you do a United States Marine Corps emblem in that style! God bless you!

Those are beautiful, Rod. The wood was amazing. It almost was a shame to cut it up. It was nice enough to just finish and display the wood alone as an art piece. The real beauty, though, is in the creation of your own making. Bill

Good morning, Marine. The word, satisfying, comes to mind. A very nice board, what is the best way to use it? Boom, a thought translates to action. A favorite tool is applied to the wood and the shape is crafted. All the while your mind is relaxed, at peace, after all that is part of the goal. When the finish is applied, a revelation takes place. This piece of very nice wood is transformed into an almost indescribable object of beauty. Can not wait to see it assembled with the hardware. Completed project in my hands, gorgeous. It is good, very good. Well, those are my thoughts. Thanks for the therapy. Who would not enjoy holding one of those pens after watching the process? Thank you, Darlou! They're a medium ball point, super smooth black ink, Parker refills... quality feel. Not overly heavy, but more so than a store bought packaged pen... they have a nice hand feel. Sorry I didn't include a writing demo in the video. Hope to remember that for next time!

Then pens are amazing..a little trick I do with wood like that is linseed oil and a old oil lamp put the linseed oul on then use the oil lamp to darken the wood then buff with steel wool the smoke from the oil lamp darkens the wood..it looks alot like your pens keep up the great work..

Nice pens, MSgt Humphrey. I have never turned ambrosia maple before. Looks like a nice wood to turn. It's a little too pricey here in East Tx; like most other good turning woods.

Nice piece of figured there. Much potential. I noticed something familiar here. I think your lathe is out of center slightly. It seems the pen blank did not evenly match the bushings 360. You may wanna see if your tail stock and headstock line up perfectly. I had to adjust mine recently. Small projects like thos really show the flaws in being out of center. Just saying... Beautiful pens as expected!

I wondered which of you would catch that slight wobble. It's the pen mandrel being slightly bent in this case, not the lathe tail or headstock being out of alignment. But in any case, when I finished, the pen blanks did match the bushings exactly, I made sure of it because I intend to sell all of this batch. it's a matter of maintaining sandpaper contact with the bushing and blank at the same time to overcome that very slight wobble. If it was any worse, I'd replace the mandrel... I should anyway, lol, just pinching pennies. You're right though, the flaws can become very large in smaller projects, if the proper attention to detail isn't observed. Thanks, my friend!

@RHumphreyOutdoors i know your pain. I've bent 3 mandrels. Too much tailstock pressure I'm sure. Thats when i bought a Turn between centers Mandrel System. Penn States sells them. No more bent Mandrels. A good investment for frequent pen turners. And i rarly make Pens anymore. But it comes in handy for other small items!
