Today in Germany 9,3x72R is only allowed to be used on roe - Rehwild. 9,3x72R is called "Försterpatrone" = Foersterpatrone (ö=oe) = forester cartridge. From the beginning of the last century a lot of hunters, especially using Drillings, shot roe and deer and wild boar with the 9,3x72R. BUT usually in the forest! And until today this caliber is one of the best forest calibers!

Thank you Oliver - all these laws - I love the 9.3X72R - completely effective on deer here and so civilized - recoil is mild and the bullet doesn't pulverize the venison. I like the heavy bullets. I've owned all the different combination guns you describe so well - I like the BockBuechsFlinte best - extremely versatile firearm and still not too heavy. Thank you for writing!

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns The Försterpatrone was originally intended for much milder loads (Poudre B, I presume), back when smokeless gunpowder was a new thing. Hence it generates only a a meager 1,400 joules, way below the legal EU minimum of 2,200 joules at E100 for wild boar (and other big game), whereas the minimum for roe deer is 980 joules.

My late uncle had a really nice Drilling in his collection. It was made in 1914 and is profusely engraved. It has external hammers. There are no import marks since it was a GI bring back from WWII. It has double 16-gauge barrels and is chambered in 9,3x72, which was once thought to be a great Red Stag caliber. Someday I will buy it from my cousin, who currently has possession of it. There is no case for this gun, but it certainly belongs on one. Thank you for showing this fine piece!!!

These are really great - and useful - hunting firearms. Here in Denmark they are relatively common. They are especially good, if you aren't hunting for one specific animal. I know a lot people who use them while hunting on their own property - for rough shooting basically . A nice looking used boxlock drilling from the common Suhl (Sauer, Merkel, Simson, Krieghoff etc.) manufactures can be had for about $2k (+/-) here. Might just have to buy one myself! Krieghoff offers a wide variety of caliber options. But you should consider that with two 12 gauge barrels the drilling becomes heavy. Also a rimless rifle cartridge is not optimal for tilting barell guns. Waidmannheil from Germany.

Very nice. I'm sure you have measured the shot barrels' chamber lengths. They are often 65mm or less and intended for low pressure ammunition, thus explaining the relatively thin steel one frequently sees at the breech. The fluid steel is often a molybdenum alloy but lacking the tensile strength of modern ordinance steel, so caution is justified even when older guns show nitro proof marks. Today's smokeless powders are often quite different from old ones.

This example of what drillings are is clearly a masterpiece. German firearms and craftsmanship, especially pre-war, is always well engineered and meticulously constructed. I've seen a number of these at gun shows over the years and almost all were GI post-war trophies... Many of them sell for well under their real values because drillings are not popular among typical American hunters. The only shotgun/rifle combo I've ever seen that's sold well in past times here in the US was the old Stevens O/U which came in numerous chamberings. I fixed one of these for a friend a few years ago and it was a 22/410. It was a family gun that had served as the farm's go-to varmint and rabbit gun. I wonder what the reasoning is behind the German law that was mentioned before my post, seems a shame that the government punishes the family after someone's death. Great video with plenty of useful information, as always! One day you should simply open your safes and spend an hour or so reviewing your current collection. I'd love to see that video!

Hi Paul, Interesting idea on the vault video - may just do it too. I didn't know about that German law - maybe some viewers from Germany can comment here. Anyway, I would just give my guns to a properly licensed son/daughter/beneficiary before any Will applied. The Savage/Stevens combination guns work and are popular - even the latest modern materials version; thank for mentioning them.

john martin - 271,000+ is a bit on the skimpy side for the number slaughtered by the Nazis considering the number of Jews alone was over 6 million! The total number of those murdered in the Nazi camps will never be known but Nazi records were written by the camp staff so I give them credit for every innocent soul they claimed in their own records. I agree with your assessment of many things being stolen by GI's after the war was finished, that's simply the aftermath of all wars throughout history. It doesn't make it right but it is what happens when one group falls to another. Perhaps, if all leaders led from the front lines or knew their sons were in the first unit, maybe war wouldn't appear as such a great option.

They are used for hunting in germany, though not as much as they used to be since modern guns have largely taken over. But they see a little comeback in drive hunts due to the ability for a quick second and third shot. Also the Drilling is still one of the 5-8 (depending on region) different firearms that you could be tested on during weapon handling section of the german hunting license test, so every german hunter is at least faintly familiar with this type of gun.

First off we must ref to these in the correct pronounciation , Dri llings , from german dri (three) . Four barrelversions are veir lings. A few overlooked important festures are a "see thru tunnel under the scope toallow iron sight viewing with the scope attached, a set "hair" trigger engaged by pushing the rifle triggerforward into the click or "set" position. The scopes are almost universally adjusted for windage by the forward mount screw, elevation adjustment by the top turret knob. Rifle Accuracy is amazing accomlished bythe design of three barrels being connected together in a triangulation thus providing a very stiff and vibrationfree rifle barrel. Weight is reduced by employing Krupp fluid nickel steel allowing for thin shot barrels and a thin rifle barrel in a triangulation design. Shot chokes are achived by hammer peening the last section of the barrel toachieve not only desired pattern spread but point of aim of pattern. It is not uncommon to find the right shotbarrel choke to throw a brenneke slug perfectly at 40 yds. A dri lling is not a firearm for a novice hunter, complexityof safety and barrel selection can lead to mistakes , but in the hands of a skilled hunter it reigns supremein versitle performance.

What a thing of beauty. I would imagine it's a good thing it'll do it all, because it would probably cost so much that you'd have no money left. Clearly it was well taken care of, given the work put into making a new case like that. Have you done a video on how you find all this stuff? The only thing I know is to go to local gun shows, or look at web sites, but the competition would drive prices too high for me (not that I could afford something like this). Interesting - I didn't know about the new German law. Would it make sense for gun owners to make sure one or more of their beneficiaries gets the proper licenses and simply gift the guns to the beneficiary prior to moving to the happy hunting grounds? The government could not block that as the beneficiary would be the same as any third party buyer - except the guns would be a gift or near to a gift. Just an idea. I wonder what it is about governments and guns.

You may be able to tell the date of manufacture from looking at the proof marks. These things will have a bunch of different proof marks, but one may have a 3 or 4 digit number; that's the date the firearm was proofed (usually, but not always, the same year it was manufactured). The first 1 or 2 digits is the month, the last 2 digits is the year. For example, 625 would be June 1925, and 1137 would be November 1937.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns I did quite a bit of research before buying a drilling of my own. If you have a photo of the proof marks, I should be able to tell you what most of them mean. Date codes, gauge/caliber, proof marks, maker marks, etc. Some markings, nobody knows what they signify, mainly because they're internal codes (ie, a letter or number in a square, circle, etc. signifying a particular worker made the barrel or trigger guard, or a component was sourced from a specific maker, so the manufacturer can trace all parts to a particular source, but it hides the source from outsiders who may track down the source of specific components and deal with them directly instead of the middleman who assembles the guns. That was quite common in Germany, with the big gun makers sourcing parts out to local gunsmiths and then marking the guns either with the big company's name or the distributor's name. It also helps explain why two guns assembled on the same assembly line in the same year can have wildly different markings on it.).

And 9.3x72R ammunition is readily available commercially. It's almost unheard of in the US, but still quite common in Europe, so if you don't feel like reloading you can order some ammo from Fiocchi, Prvi Partisan, etc. or get it from a boutique ammo maker in the US. The reason it's such a mild load is that, like .38 Special, it originally started as a black powder round before transitioning to smokeless powder, and ammunition manufacturers kept the specs largely the same in order to avoid blowing up older guns that aren't rated for the pressures of modern ammunition. Much like .38 Special getting loaded to the true performance of a cartridge its size with smokeless ammo and having the case slightly lengthened to prevent it from being loaded in older guns and called .357 Magnum, 9.3x74R is much the same idea, a cartridge of roughly the same dimensions but loaded to the true performance of a cartridge that size with smokeless powder, and not constrained by the limitations of a firearm designed for black powder. I believe the 9.3x74R has an actual neck and shoulder though, and 9.3x72R is tapered, so they're not directly descended one from the other like .357 Magnum and .38 Special are.

I often thought that drillings could potentially be (mildly) popular here in the US if chambered in the right cartridges. For example, double .410s over .22 Hornet, .22 Mag, or .223. Of course, they would have to be more utilitarian in build quality, like the Ruger No. 1s.

That .410x.410x one of the .22 centerfires is an excellent idea - or even a rimfire.

They are actually called a dreileng. Drei is German for 3. English speaking N.Americans mispronounced it when they encountered it and it is always misspelled here since.

9,3x72r is an old blackpowder round right? oftne chambered in old husqvarnas and with modern powders they can't really be loaded enough to meet the legal demands for moose and big game in Sweden
@UnitedStatesOfGuns
@UnitedStatesOfGuns 6 жыл бұрын
Yes - an old black powder round. It is a long cartridge and rimmed - quite thin as well. I think single shots and combination guns chambered this round. It would be hard to imagine a bolt action so chambered.

Sellier & Bellot makes smokeless 9.3x72r, and some (newer-production) European-made double rifles are chambered in it, but it's probably a good idea to check for nitro proofing before buying any.

I used to have 2 - 16x16 and a 10 X something rimmed cartridge. The other was 16 X 9.3X72R. I only fired the second one - and then as things go a couple of friends had to have them. I'll find another and make a video. Unique and useful arms.

Where did the name “drilling” originate?
@Swindle1984
@Swindle1984 4 жыл бұрын
The German number three. Ein = one, zwei = two, drei = three. Drilling = three-thing. Vierling = four-thing. Its name comes from having three barrels instead of one or two. Interestingly, I've never heard of a double-barreled firearm called a zweiling, they call it a doppel, same as us.

Excellent video as usual. While i can admire the ingenuity, workmanship and design of drillings, they have never appealed to me. A shotgun should be light and lively in the hands, hard to do i would imagine with one or more rifle barrels slung beneath. If you are going to shoot large animals, then carry a rifle, if you want to shoot game such as pheasant or grouse, then carry a shotgun. I would think thats the reason drillings never caught on outside Germany/Austria.
@UnitedStatesOfGuns
@UnitedStatesOfGuns 6 жыл бұрын
All valid comments and a lot of people agree - as you note - the drilling is not so popular or well known. I had similar opinions until I owned a couple and hunted with one. I think they are less popular in Germany now, although there is always a core group of believers/buyers. For awhile single shot rifles seemed headed for museums and then the Ruger #1 came along - probably won't happen for drillings though. Anyway, remarkable firearms. Thanks for writing - as always.
