I have a 37a 20 Ga. that I got for Christmas from Grandpa in 1973.Sill have this gun, it has put a lot of rabbits, partridge, woodcock, ducks and deer on the table.I have never ever had a single issue with this little shot gun, and it still kicks just like it did on that Christmas. This will be passed down to my son one of these days. He shot his first deer with it.....

Winchester(Cooey original manufacturer) model 37 is one of my favorite shotguns and definitely my favorite single shot shotgun of all time. After Winchester bought Cooey arms( a Canadian company) these lovely shotguns became available in the US market. Nice video. I use mine for breaking clays and hunting pheasants.

There are a few ways to age this gun. #1 1936 has the pig tail #2 Is the "Winchester" engraved on the Bottom of the Receiver #3 The hammer and trigger designs slightly changed over the years. The "RED LETTER" Winchesters were in production from 1936- @1948. After that they went to a smooth receiver to cut cost on manufacturing. Now If you have a "Pigtailed Red Letter" Winchester Model 37 then you have one of the only ones you can definitely say is a true 1936 Winchester 37 and you may want to hold on to it because its something special. The claims are that the Pigtailed ones are because of a rush to get the guns out on the market and the barrel opening levers that they had made to go on the guns did not get delivered in time. So what Winchester did was to get their in house gunsmiths to take some metal they had around the shop and make a lever for the first 200-300 just to get them out to the stores almost like a display model. They just curled the metal back over onto itself leaving an open loop on the lever and put it on the guns to ship. The ordered levers came in to the factory in January of 1937 and were put on the guns from that point forward. I picked up a 1936 pigtail at a pawn store a couple of years ago and was looking for a replacement lever because I thought someone had made one to put on the gun after the one that came on it was broke or lost. After doing a little research to figure out what one to get I found out all of this info and was amazed at what I had come across. I have had it authenticated and it all seems to be true. If anyone has any other info on these guns i would love to hear it because I have become fascinated with this model with the research I have already done on it.

First gun I bought was my 37, in 20ga. I was about 11, about 37years ago. My dad and I hunted rabbits, using a beagle, It's killed a few deer (rifled slugs) plenty of rabbits and dove. Has never misfired, even with my reloads. The forend comes off with a sharp pull and then if you break open the barrel, it will come off completely for cleaning or to store or transport broken down. Mine has a beautiful piece of walnut for the buttstock, all original.

Down here they are also known as "half hammers" due to the position of the hammer, breakdown lever. Very accurate and easy to disassemble for thorough cleaning.

You do not need a screwdriver and you do not need to disassemble the spring mechanism, pins etc. to remove the barrel. You just pull down on the front end of the forestock and it pops off mechanism and all. You can then remove the barrel like any break-action shotgun. No tools required.

@@RockerWasRight No, that's not right. I have an early 12 ga 37 with the narrow, curved hammer (the one that's a little hard to cock because it's so small) behind the breakdown lever. Exactly. I also say that the 37A is a better gun. It was a lot better designed. It's easy and fast to break apart. If there's plastics n the trigger section like other later Winchesters I don't know. I usually don't get that involved with my guns. I'm an archery guy (both modern and traditional). It makes a hell of a squirrel gun. I need to refinish my stock because the original owned never cleaned water off it it. But I'm happy with it bought it at auction for $160 and shoots like a Winchester.

The model 37a is not related to the model 37. A legendary Canadian firearms maker called "Cooey" first released the Cooey model 84 around 1947/48 and sold nearly 2 million model 84's were sold in Canada, and in 1961 Winchester-Western Canada bought the Cooey company, and continued making the model 84 until approximately 1966, when Winchester changed the model # to "840", and it was made into the 1970's, and then the model changed to "370" and finally "37A" until it was discontinued in 1979. The Winchester model 37 was not related to the 37A, even though it is a similar design. There is a Wikipedia page for the Cooey/Winchester model 84/840/370/37A that explains the story of this very elegantly designed shotgun. I have enjoyed shooting a Cooey/Winchester-Western model 84 chambered for 2 & 3/4" 12 gauge which has a barrel cut down to 24". BTW, The shortest barrel this model came with was a 26" barrel. I agree with everything else that was said in this video about this shotgun.

this guy has no clue about the model 37 IMO. first off he doesn't know the difference between a Mod 37 and a RED Letter Mod 37. the Red Letter ( WINCHESTER ) is not written on the barrel. it's written on the bottom of the reciever only.

Not sure when they switched from one to the other though. I have a red letter one and its the same design as yours but I've seen several videos of others that are designed slightly different.

+Brandon T 37a was post '64. Both are good shotguns. They both kick like a mule. Light loads and a Limbsaver are recommended. If you can find a nice SOFT recoil pad of an inch or better cushion, it will help. The narrow stock puts all the kick in a smaller area. Some of my Frankenguns with narrow stocks have recoil pads that actually flare out to a wider footprint where they meet my shoulder. A cheek-pad atop the stock can help too, if it's taller in back than in the front. That last helps the gun to move the stock away from your face. If you look at Ljutic and other high end trap guns, you'll see the bore would extend right along through the comb of the stock and the cheekpiece might be even a bit radical. An elevated rib atop the barrel brings the shooters head up above the line of the bore. As there are a million or so of these mini-mules out there, somebody needs to start making elevated ribs and trap stocks for them.

Stingy, perhaps you need a bit more research on model 37's. You lost some credibility when you said "red paint was put on the barrel markings." The older "red letters" had "Winchester" on the bottom of the receiver and red enamel was applied there. Also your take-down is not exactly on the money.

I'm referring to the original model 37's that were made between 1937 and 1964. I used to see these a lot at the local turkey shoots and they all eventually misfire. I think the 37A was manufactured after 1964 and the misfire problem was corrected.

+Bobby Easterly I've worked in the tool and die industry for over twenty years, and have been a hobby gunsmith for twice that long. After studying a customers model 37, just brought in for light firing pin strike, I can certainly understand what you are saying about misfires. The striker design is appalling. The hammer pivots on a teensy 1/16" pin and the striker spring stop pin is so under built it bends under the pressure of the spring, resulting in less preload in an already marginal design.

well I can't say about misfire's because I have several model 37's in everything but 28 gauge very hard to find and if lucky enough to find u need to go to the bank and get a loan? but none I have ever used has misfired and I have shot all different kinds of shell's and load's in them I guess I might have gotten the best one's that were ever made by Winchester I really can not say, i also have nearly all the model 12's. the sixteen I have is mint never even been shot and I personally know what my 12 will do to a shot paper for I can cut an x out of the paper well I will tell u how good it is and I can prove what I am saying when some their see me pull it out quite a few will put their's up and leave they tell me they want leave if I will shoot anything else I might of bought because they really don't want to leave but if somebody new come's in we all don't know and start's to bragging about how good their gun shoot's well the side betting begin's I told them the last time I want a percent from now on lol, they will slip up to me and tell me go get bess and after a shot or two they will leave so it is so far the king of the turkey shoot's or are where I am from anyway and I am from east Tennessee if that tell's u anything.
