CLIP DESCRIPTION:
David (David Naughton) has a nightmare that mutant Nazis murder his family… then his nurse.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
While wandering the English moors on vacation, college yanks David (David Naughton) and Jack (Griffin Dunne) happen upon a quaint pub with a mysterious patronage who warn them not to leave the road when walking after dark. Irreverent of such advice as characters in horror films always are, the two decide to find a short cut....David wakes up in the hospital with a nasty bite wound to his shoulder; the freshly deceased, and rapidly decomposing, Jack arrives soon after to deliver the grim news that, unless he commits suicide, David will become a werewolf when the moon is full. David dismisses the encounter as a hallucination, but all indicators point to lycanthrope; evenings of barking and bloodletting follow closely behind. While the story is thin and much of the tongue-in-cheek humor is overdone, there are plenty of genuine jolts thanks to makeup guru Rick Baker's eye-popping special effects. The werewolf, resembling a cross between a bear and a wolverine, appears frighteningly real, and, given the fantastic premise, the gore is most convincing (although surprisingly and refreshingly scant). The hospital dream sequences are creative, and the scenes in which the werewolf runs rampant through downtown London are particularly good. In all, An American Werewolf in London is an original, atmospheric film that manages both to scare and amuse. While dismissed by most American critics upon its release, the film managed to secure a place in the annals of American cinema when Baker won an Academy Award for his amazing effects and creature designs.

I suspect that this is a distorted hybrid memory of David and the Werewolf that bit him. Perhaps the Werewolf that bit David was a Jew whose home was attacked by Nazis in Germany or Poland, and he was bitten by a werewolf who was a German soldier. He later came to the United Kingdom to live in peace after the war was over, but he sadly continued living life as a Werewolf.

I'm not really scared by many horror movies, but this scene gets me every damn time. The first time I watched it I just screamed "NO YOU CAN'T DO THAT THAT'S NOT FAIR!", but I loved it. Definitely a scene that comes out of nowhere. At first, I didn't understand it. But I think I do now. It's the consciousness of the werewolf and how it perceives those who would hunt it. To us, the werewolf is the horrible monster that we fear. But to the werewolf, gun-toting soldiers trying to kill it would be the horrible monsters that it fears.

Jack Griffin Not all Germans were Nazis, including those in the military. Roughly 30 percent of THE MILITARY were officially associated with the party.

Punisherfan123 That's weird, because usually, people associate the German soldiers as Nazis. So we fought that 30 percent of the military who were the Nazis?
@Punisherfan123
@Punisherfan123 8 жыл бұрын
Jack Griffin We fought the whole military. The nazis were just a political party. Also, just so you know, by military I am referring to the Wehrmacht.
@Punisherfan123
@Punisherfan123 8 жыл бұрын
Jack Griffin A majority of the Nazis who actually committed war crimes or crimes against humanity were members of the SS, Gestapo, or SD. Many of them never saw combat, and managed to use their incredible pull and influence to escape punishment once the war was over, and left the mostly innocent Wehrmacht to `face near certain death in Soviet gulags, and U.S., French, and British prison camps.

This is one of the few cases where I prefer the tv cut because there is no slow dissolve showing its a dream, its just Alex reading then it cuts right to David at home, throws you off more. Excellent work by Landis, love this movie.

My friend was a self-taught special effects sculptor/genius who grew up as a fan of artists like Rick Baker, only to win a mask-making contest a few short years after this film while we were still in high school judged by Rick himself. He ended up working for Mr. Baker for 16 years until the shop was closed. Rick Baker himself gave my friend the prop from this movie (I am guessing there were probably a few) from the famous paw scene. I have no artistic abilities, but through my friend got to meet and hang out with some of the legends of FX, including the KNB guys. Ironically, I only got to meet Rick Baker once when I was a groomsman in my friend's wedding and he was a guest, lol.

I really hate the fact that they re-did the sound effects in the new DVD editions. This scene with the original audio was even more terrifying. With all-do respect to John Landis, I don't know why he would allow that. It just took away the integrity just a little bit. Otherwise, I love the hell out of this movie.
@cecilbagshaw6708

Totally agree and baffled as to why! The original sound added to the menace - the sound of a MAC 10 on full auto is what you hear in the original and it so fitted in with the craziness. Like I said, I may have imagined it but sure they had a real kitchy sounding doorbell too. I saw the X rated version and sure David at some point coughs up somebodies Thumb?? And a very vague memory of a tramp being savaged over a car bonnet.

It's a weird, fever dream. It's supposed to mix David's thoughts of home and his family, with the monster that attacked them, and his Jewish heritage too (which is why the monsters are dressed as Nazis).
