Hi Paul it seems like a good strategic move in combining a few formats. I love the audio podcasts and the audio version of #askpaulkirtley it makes my grass cutting bearable even enjoyable😀 I plugged your podcast in a recent overnight trip that I filmed for KZfaq, it's great for long solo evenings. I'm looking forward to more intensive KZfaq skills video as I consider you to be one of the best presenters and teachers. Your well rounded and erudite podcasts are a great education as well. Hi Paul, I completely agree, it is the right decision to move AskPaulkirtley over to audio only. This would defo save you time to prioritise packaging and delivering the right content to the right audience. KZfaq has evolved into being a very visual storytelling platform, Look at primitive technology. I have a few ideas for you if you would like to hear them.

I understand this is an old video, but I'd like to say that, being Italian, and even if your English is clear and understandable, videos have got a great feature that podcasts haven't: subtitles. They can be very useful in certain circumstances, like when you cite some brand names or species of plants, for example. - Then, I totally agree about making videos about skills, even if this can look like giving away know-how for free, it also happens to be a very useful branding method. Paul, you have a skill that I don't see in other bushcraft teachers: a rare mix of confidence and clearness. Now I don't find other words to describe it. I follow many other channels, but they all lack of this sort of tidiness of speech and content delivery.

Hey Paul, I like the evolution of your thinking relating to your content marketing channels, makes a lot of sense. I'm also of course very happy to hear that your YT channel will feature more 'visual/skills' material in the fullness of time. It sounds like you've had a good think about where your content will be most effective and what is going to work best for you... And, the announcement that you will be bringing skills based videos to the channel is great news indeed! I very much look forward to them. Although Q&A videos don't seem to fit with YT's changing platform, I've noticed that podcast type interviews especially when filmed do ok... It's something you are already well versed at and might be worth considering in the future when the skills videos are bringing in new viewers.
@PaulKirtley
@PaulKirtley 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Stuart. Yes, I've noticed that interviews definitely seem popular currently. Or even chunks of interviews (Joe Rogan et al do this a lot). But when I look at my analytics, all my skills videos and tips videos do much better than any #AskPaulKirtley. Indeed looking at other bushcraft related channels, the views on many videos run at 25-50% of their subscriber base. The views on APKs run at around 5-10% of my subscriber base. If 90% of my subs either don't want to see that content or YT is not showing it to them, then things need to be changed up so I can add more value on this platform. Audio podcasts have a different dynamic altogether and I can see the differences in how the same material is consumed across different platforms. But I will continue to monitor things and I will continue to experiment to see what works on my channel. Thanks for your thoughts and input. Cheers, Paul

I write this comment with mixed feelings. I found your channel and content just a few weeks back and have been watching it a lot, learning a lot and filling some gaps i did not know were there after 25 years of outdoor activities, being a boy scout since a young boy myself. I absolutely understand your wish to consolidate your content, especially if the youtube channel with it's current content isn't the amount of attention it deserves. On the other hand i really like to see the people i listen to. But that's a personal thing and does not effect your content at all ofc. So please know, your face will be missed ;-) But i was very happy to hear that you will continue to create skill related videos. I like those the most to be honest. So as an end note, please know that content and videos have great value to and impact on me and i am sure others as well. Greetings from Germany !

Thanks for your thoughts and feedback. I really appreciate it. I have made #AskPaulKirtley videos in this format for over 3 years and I really enjoy making them, from choosing the questions to sitting down in the woods with a coffee to answer them through to putting the videos together and publishing them (it's quite a simple format to edit), so I have been considering this decision for months as I'll be sad to see the format go. I do need, however, to get this channel working better and looking at the most popular content here (as confirmed by your comments), even though a core of my subscribers really do like the APKs the skills based videos are those that people like the most. If I had the time and resources to produce both, maybe I would continue but ultimately, if I want to do more videos that are not APK, I need to ditch the APKs as videos. You'll still see my face, just doing different things :-) Warm regards, Paul

Hello Paul, I am new to your Channel and I am happy to be here. Yes, I think you have made some good decisions with how you can reach out to and share your adventures and skills with your audience. Yes, there are some very large Bushcraft Channels out there, I subscribe to a few. This is not necessarily indicative of superior educational value though, although it may be great entertainment. Your channel, in my opinion, is of very high quality content above casual entertainment. As you mentioned I have cut a Japanese Water Stone in half. Though when I am out in the forest I do sometimes use a disposable 2 grade grit nail file (my wife does not thank me for this), they cut very well though the water stones make a better job. I accidentally left a 'wet' water stone in my shed, it was below -25C and crumbled to pieces when I took it out in the spring. I continue to experiment with light axes with longer shafts in the Spruce, Birch, Aspen, Maple, Balsam Fir forest I live in, I rarely use a machete, or heavy knife for firewood gathering or limbing as it takes too much time to process wood. With regard to Northern Sami (I have some ancestors way back) the axe has little value because they harvest brush for small fires (Arctic Birch, Arctic Willows etc) so the Leuku type knife has more value (I have a couple of old Sami 'Leukus'). Thanks, WS

I think one of the aspects of visiting different terrains in similar climatic zones is you see the similarities as well as appreciating the differences. Regarding sleeping bags I'd avoid down bags as they compress under you & lose almost all insulation under you so down should only go on top as its only good when it lofts up. Look at the sewing style as well as down moves about & if it's got side to side stitching all the filling can sit at your sides but not on top of your body so look for box stitching if the fill of a bag can move. Thermal bace layers are the smallest lightest way to way insulation & a wool hat or balaclava can really add.... Heat pads cost £1 ish & can last 12+ hours thus adding a load of heat.(back ache stick on pads type) Always carry a foil blanket as they are very good short term but they should be an outer layer as they don't breathe.
@leftytracking1397
@leftytracking1397 5 жыл бұрын
Diver Dan - Interesting comments regarding the down bag . I have very expensive North Face down bags rated for -30 degrees Fahrenheit and shaking them out to get the loft during freezing rain , wind and snow can be a real pain . I started using a North Face bag using a "hollow fill" synthetic insulation rated for 20 degree and put it inside a "Fox Bag" which is used for SAR / search and rescue . The Fox Bag is made from heavy mylar and by itself reflects approximately 70 % of an occupants body heat . many people have never used a military body bag to use as a cover over sleeping bags and I totally recommend them . Sleeping bag cover and can be used as a hammock - floatation device and improvised back pack . ATB

The platform probably isn't working because in these kind of videos, you talk the talk, but don't walk the walk.
