An Artist Sketchbook should look like CRAP

Art Prof: Create & Critique

Күн бұрын

A true artist sketchbook should look be a total mess. See pages from Art Prof Clara Lieu's sketchbooks, you'll see scribbles, empty pages, half finished doodles, messy handwriting and more. Those sketchbooks you see on Instagram that are so perfect and beautiful don't represent what the artistic process is really like! They're staged and have nothing to do with what a sketchbook represents: the primordial soup of the creative process, which is ugly & unglamorous. #shorts

I couldn't discipline myself to commit to a sketchbook, until a friend and I agreed to do a "swap art journal" and now I'm addicted to it. I've finally experimented in so many of the ways I hoped to, and have lots of plans to continue. It's easy to see what my style is as I flip through the pages.... especially when you look at her work on one pg and mine on the next. WOW! I didn't realize how clear cut my style was until now. She has a very different style to mine, so we influence one another to experiment with different colors, materials and finish our work in ways we might not have otherwise. We actually share 2 art journals so that we can both have one in-hand at all times. We swap every 4-6 weeks since we live in different countries, and mail costs can be high if we swap too often. Just a fun idea for those who struggle to stick to your art journal. It has really inspired me, and I can't stop creating other projects since starting. My art block has been killed lol.

I was literally just watching an artist do a sketch book showing from front to back. Every page was a perfect piece of art. And I'm like that's not real that's gotta be your final project sketch book cus as someone who's been an artist since preschool and had hundreds of sketch books. They are more then half messy ideas or doodles.

I agree what you see online in “tours” seems so forced and faked. Those are more like final finished pieces put together into a series. The internet gives this false sense of being too perfect and final right away.

I have separate sketchbooks for different things. One just for swatching stuff, making thumbnails, and random/crappy stuff. One that is all over the place, crazy ideas and exploring new things that may end up not looking so good. And then one that is for more “nice” looking complete works.

In my opinion, there is no right or wrong way to fill a sketchbook. Any cheap but great sketchbooks to suggest?
@ravenheart9448
@ravenheart9448 3 жыл бұрын
depends on what medium ur gonna use: - canson xl mixed media - strathmore visual journal these are pretty well rounded for all kinds of mediums. -ischolar sketchbooks these aren’t good for wet media but they take pencil and other dry stuff decently. - five below has some pretty cheap sketchbooks too ($5 or less) the paper is kinda thin so you can’t use wet stuff or markers without bleeding but they’re pretty good for basic dry media. you can also try : walmart, target, barnes and noble, the stationery section in burlington (if there’s a physical store nearby) one thing i’d suggest is to look around and compare how much they cost from the different websites/stores, some are way overpriced.

For me i need to have a pretty and aesthetic sketchbook. If i dont i lose inspiration and i dont draw. Everybody has different ways of what they think. I dont think anyone should shame another for what they draw or how they make their sketchbooks look. Honest opinion
@artprof
@artprof 10 ай бұрын
I think the vibe is more critiquing the standard of pretty sketchbooks as the norm, and less about individual artists that have specific reasons for making pretty sketchbooks. I think it's possible to say that the culture of aesthetic sketchbooks is detrimental to many artists while also being useful for some artists. -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist

Over the years of improving my skill level, there is one thing I sadly lost: not caring what’s in my sketchbook. I use to do sketches of fanart, my own characters, etc. and I had fun doing that. 2 years ago, when I started my very first sketch book, I was really disappointed because it didn’t looked “aesthetic” but now every time that I start a sketch on my sketch book I’m telling my self this: “Even if it looks like sh♪t, I won’t erase it because failing is, even if we hate it, a part of the process to become better.” At first it’s hard because every time I open my sketch book my eyes are bleeding but it’s ok, next time it will be better 🥲
