Testament" which is going through its editorial process. This masterpiece should be a ton of fun for every skeptic interested in viewing the Old Testament through a skeptical mind.
Dr. Joshua Bowen graduated from the Johns Hopkins University in 2016, with a Ph.D. in Assyriology. He wrote his dissertation on the lamentational liturgies of the city of Kiš, and specializes in the Sumerian language. Joshua was awarded the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (D.A.A.D.) and Fulbright scholarship during the 2014-2015 academic year, allowing him to spend the year in Tubingen, Germany, working with Dr. Konrad Volk on his dissertation project.
As well as his Ph.D., Josh holds a B.S. in Religion from Liberty University, a Th.M. in the Old Testament from Capital Bible Seminary, and a M.A. in Near Eastern Studies from the Johns Hopkins University. Prior to entering academia, Joshua was a chaplain in the U.S. Airforce where he also gained an A.A. in Avionics.

Loved the Cybermen analogy, based on "they go to Heaven" argument it seems like an Apologist should be for Abortion so the child never suffers and goes straight to Heaven with no risk of not believing and going to Hell.

@Whats In a name I'm an atheist as well and I'm not keen on abortion. A lot of people see murder is an extension of theft, you're stealing that child's chance at living the best life they can since they also have no choice ending their own life.

It all depends where you live. If you grow up in Christian country, it’s hard to be a dissenting voice. For those of you who think the cities and liberal areas are better, live there for decades like I have and try having a dissenting voice. Its the same experience, except in reverse.

I've been following you for a while. I was a Christian, had contact with evangelical Christianity in my late teens early twenties. However, I was never as "on fire" as Derek was. I loved the prophets and texts of the type "I don't want offerings, I want you to be just". Now every year, I go through various schools of thought/religions. Last year it was Stoicism (which is my closest philosophy). This year, I'm going through the bible. Today, I read 1 Samuel 15, as referred to by Josh (slaying of the Amalekites). The text said "I don't want offerings, I want obedience". What can I say. I'm glad the cognitive dissonance has gone away. Keep up the good work.

I am sure he is a nice guy, but there are many texts about sociological examination of theological thought of Israelites, by sociologist. This is just what you get from someone trained in Bible scholarship.

Former fundamentalist here who enjoys these such discussions, I will be ordering the book. The Bible does not work for me as a moral code, and I never loved the God of the Bible, but I am interested in gaining context to this important book. I know the Bible scriptures front and back, but I don't have the historical background or the actual facts around who wrote each of the books.

I want to "drill" down on some of these specifics but I do lack the background so I downloaded volume one! I wish that audible and some of the other places gave you authors a better cut I'm truly sorry but I will try to promote the book as much as possible.

Dr. Josh hit it on the nail... People will not let go of fairh based on ancient biblical correction or what is true or not true... It is more broad. When I look at faith healers, and prosperity preaching, what the true of the text is doesn't matter, it is more about culture, tradition, family and spiritual results

In my view it also depends on the specific religious context of each country. In countries with a strong catholic culture people are drawn by the beauty of the architecture, the sumptuous liturgy and the processions during the saints festivities. In other countries it's more about the sense of community and the personal relationship with the divine. The common denominator is how engrained the beliefs are in people's identity. That's why it's so hard to accept evidence. It proves part of what they are isn't real.

Abraham’s family was supposedly from Ur Kasdim “Ur of the Chaldees”. As Dr Josh indicated, this is not just a case of using the current name for a territory that has changed rulers. Genesis 15:7 has Yahweh telling Abram that He brought him out of Ur Kasdim.

A question I've always had was - was every single Canaanite parent sacrificing their children? Because if that was the case, the Canaanites would have died off within a generation, with all of the children being dead. So if the bible really means that all Canaanite parents did this, then how could they have survived for hundreds of years until god commanded that they be wiped out?

@@KumoCC In some cases, yes - but it doesn’t mention that in every scenario. The most explicit example is when the angel of death killed the firstborn in Egypt- but of course that was ordered by Yahweh himself. How Ironic.

Off topic. But the surgery your grandmother had. My mother in law had a tumor the size of a grapefruit with those tentacles that ran down her neck. It wasn't cancer. But that was 33 years ago. She is still alive. She got over churchy after the surgery. You know. God saved her. I wish the best for your grandmother. I hope she is still with you ....its cancer so much harder. Empathetic hugs.

Josh has a BS. Very interesting show. I want MS.* He can then give us more of his PhD.** I learned this at Montana State University in 1972, from a college professor from North Dakota who told a “North Dakota Joke” at the beginning of each class. *MS: More of the same. **PhD: Piled higher and deeper.

Gary is wrong about DNA. The human genome is nothing like computer coding. People who know a lot about both fields have explained it often enough. A lot of DNA doesn’t even code for anything, and minor changes don’t necessarily make a difference.

If it wasn't for the metaphysics of Plato, and Zarathustra of ancient Iran, and the sayings of Jesus, I might be an atheist, but I still believe in an ultimate reality.... but I can see how the Old Testament and the morally questionable issues with many world religions could turn some to experience what Nietzsche described as God is dead.... Can you ever do a program on the Zoroastrian religion? It seems that it was only from the Zoroastrian influences that there is anything positive to be read in the Old Testament... but I am still a lifetime student on this journey of existence!

I will be an atheist until I die. My wife is a theist, but seems to me to be on her way to atheism. My marriage is more important than my atheism. I don't try to convince her to believe in a God, and she doesn't try to persuade me there is a God. We have gotten along fine for 43 years of marriage.
