Part of the Shear Zone Channel. Rob starts on a geological transect across part of southern Morocco, exploring the High Atlas Range - a young mountain belt formed from tectonic inversion of Mesozoic sedimentary basins. In part 2 - he looks at the Anti-Atlas Range, a very different orogen.

Thanks for the video, Rob As a Moroccan geologist, it is very fascinating to see geologist from all the over the world come and study the regional geology of Morocco. After all , the early geologists who worked here in the beginning of the 20th century liked it so much they called it "The paradise of geologists" (Le paradis des géologues, in french). My professors always repeated that phrase in pride, as Morocco exposes most of the geological time scale, from Archean outcrops in the Sahara (to the south, i.e. Western Sahara) (West African Craton), eburnean belts, precambrian Anti-Atlas,, alpine mountains (High and Middle Atlas) to quaternary deposits. _Mohamed El Ouardi

Yes - absolutely - it's a great place for geological visitors - not just the rocks and landscapes but also the hospitality!

Before watch part 2, could we think about that uplifting and folding Atlas might indicate a long live contraction continental boundary in the southeast of the Atlantic as new crust occurring in the center of the Atlantic? (That is to say, basin boundary in Jurassic may also show some contraction nature at the same time of the extension there. Just like the relatively constant eating and digestion process will continue until a catastrophic event occurs. )

Globally of course, as the earth is neither expanding or contracting, contractional tectonics of the lithosphere should be matched by extension - but it's a complex problem on a sphere - and the balance need not be accommodated around the same ocean basin (Atlantic) - indeed it isn't! Hey that's plate tectonics for you! Check out GPlates - a really wonderful resource!
