Welcome to the FPS Podcast!
It's the day after The Game Awards (well, it was when we recorded this)! This week we're in LA, joined by resident podcast goblin Tamoor Hussain who is a regular fixture for any in-person recording. We're also honored to be joined by Megan Everett, Community Lead for Warframe, and Rebb Ford, Creative Director for Warframe. They talk us through their journey as leaders in the community management space, as well as what we should expect next from both Warframe and Soulframe.
(Plus, we got ourselves a fancy new studio to record in - not bad, huh?)

Let's meet our hosts:
- Jake Baldino (aka the Before You Buy Guy) is pretty much the most watched reviewer on KZfaq across both Gameranx and his personal channel ( / jakebaldino . If you're obsessed with Delorians, The Mummy and Pizza you can discuss that stuff with him directly over on Twitter: @JakeBaldino
- Lucy James is a Senior Producer at Gamespot and a Creative Producer at Giant Bomb. She's actually, like, experienced and credentialed and has real life skills and stuff, while the rest of the gang would be funemployed if the YT algorithm didn't kiss them for random, inexplicable reasons.
- Jirard (aka The Completionist: / thatonevide.. ) has been doing KZfaq since before Noah wore short pants. Over the course of more than a decade, Jirard has completed HUNDREDS of games to bring you the quality of review that almost no other reviewer dare bring you, getting the 100% completion trophy for every title before putting pen to paper. Jirard has a let's play channel and in his spare time he fires off the occasional hot-take over on Twitter: @TheCompletionist
- Skill Up used to work at McDonalds but he got fired for skimming too many chicken nuggets. He says he regrets it since he hasn't had a better job since.

As an indie developer myself, I do agree about the Best Indie Game not getting the stage to throw a speech, that sucked. For a Triple A developer that moment on stage is cool and all, but for an indie developer, that's an unbelieveable boost to awareness and even morale. I do think TGA does an amazing job getting us an Oscar-level ceremony for games, and they don't even have 10 years yet, so I wish they continue to evolve and get better. But well, Geoff can be a great guy with good intentions, but money always speaks very loud. I hope that TGA can continue to nurture the respect for games that's based on. Thank you for the video! Apart from being a dev I'm also making videos about games and production, and that discussion was super rich. \o/

it's not just indie - devs were treated very disrespectfully in general. Even those who got stage spot were rushed off. Freaking ludicrous.. Meanwhile Kojima and Peele were kissing each other's ass while saying nothing of value for like 10 minutes - which is more than all speeches combined. Then similar situation was with Muppets - which was just such cringe waste of time. Lastly - freaking award announcers got more time than award winners - wtf.. The fact indie of the year didn't even get spotlight was just final nail to the coffin.

In the end, these "awards" only exists for the entertainment industry to tap themselves in their backs, hell, even the porn industry has something of the kind, lol it's ridiculous, self validation mixed with depression and marketing, trying to generate a cult of personality by force. Take this year for example, BG3 is a phenom, the internet spreading information super fast, people were aware about this game being special literally at the day of release, so why even bother with even more exposition and self validation from "awards"? A rational individual, mentally healthy, this person will not buy BG3 because it won "game of the year", lol c'mon now, how much of a halfwit you have to be for a "award" to influence your decision making?

100% this. Even beyond the whole mess with the charity, which is of course more than enough to not have him ever again in the podcast, he just never had anything interesting to contribute to the vast majority of the games that were discussed. Not to mention the few times he had a "question" for their guests, and it was clear he had no idea on the subject matter. Nothing of value was lost for this podcast. Tamoor, on the other hand, great insights and clearly a person that knows the industry very well. The risk now is that developers might not even attend the next one because what's the point? Send the reward in the mail, since they only go there for 20 seconds giving speeches about really difficult circumstances. A lot of these games were the games made during COVID so it felt heartless. TGA was taking advantage of outliving E3- they want to be the replacement, but without the dedication or the highlight of so many games that made E3 special. TGA was nothing but commercial heartless celebrity and corpo shit to me. A perfect summary of the issues within the entire gaming development field right now.

I would also be glad for him to replace the completionist, but since the charity thing, it is not that easy for them. Jirard is still their friend. He still claims he is innocent of charity fraud (which I also think even if I don't like the guy). It's not because people already decided he was guilty that he is. A judge/jury and/or the IRS will decide, not us. In the meantime, FPS can't really announce a permanent replacement. It could be a Johnny Depp/Heard situation where Disney decided Depp was guilty.

Remedy had too much freedom with AW2: The open environments are massive and filled with nothing, the combat is shit because they don't have the skill or experience to make a real "survival horror" game, and the story was interesting in places but terrible in others. There is no reason that the "Herald of Darkness" section had to last **20 minutes**. Control already pulled the linear music video trick: It looked much better aesthetically, had significantly better combat encounters, and only lasted a quarter of the time. Can definitely say Remedy worked better on their more restrained, linear experiences. Like AW1 and Quantum Break. Now they just don't know when to pull back.

I think cyberpunk winning "best on-going game" is 100% pure advertisement. Most people already know of the game BUT that impression for most people is a bad one because of the game's launch. In the meantime, FPS can't really announce a permanent replacement, yet. It could be a Johnny Depp/Heard situation where Disney decided Depp was guilty.

People don't know what they are talking about and want to act like lawyers, judges, IRS investigators, and accountants. Digital Extremes and Warframe set the example for community management and it should be studied by every live service game out there.
@ncpolley
@ncpolley 6 ай бұрын
Their community management was incredibly corrupt last I checked about five years ago. I don't remember it ever being addressed. I'd like to know what makes them so above-board and exceptional? Mind, I used to listen to their weekly shows too, which I enjoyed. I am not just saying this to say it.
@thatonepenguinperson618
@thatonepenguinperson618 6 ай бұрын
@@ncpolley how was it incredibly corrupt? You can't just say that kind of thing with no examples o_o And the reason why Warframe is even alive these days is because feedback in the game gets addressed thanks to the community team. Those Devstream are around because the community team puts them together as well as prime time and Tennocon. The idea of having QA integrated into their community team is also pretty smart and something I haven't heard about being done by any other studio. I also don't think you really understand how scathing it is to be part of a community team for a live service game. ESPECIALLY when it comes to playing and streaming the game you work on. Players are incredibly judgemental, they'll trash you for making a single mistake during gameplay on streams and say things like "no one knows how to play the game over there, which is why nothing ever gets done". And the player has every right to do so (though they take it pretty far...) Yet, Warframe's community team puts up with it and still does Prime Time even if the viewer counts are not as high as they used to be. That's because as a player, it's important for them to be transparent with changes that come in. Now does this mean they're infallible? No, of course the trip sometimes like the Guides of the Lotus situation (which is the only real problem I ever heard about with them). Anyway, no developer talks with their community on a basis like DE talks with their Warframe players. Developers are always talking TO us but when was the last time a live service developer asked you about how you want your game to be monetized or about your thoughts on a specific feature they're thinking about adding?

At the end of the day if they're gonna keep calling it an award show they need to actually present people with their awards rather than rattling 5 at a time off in a break between ads. I love game shows and getting to see new trailers but it's just disrespectful to claim the event is about celebrating devs/others in the gaming space and then actively try and compress that portion into as small a time as possible. Just present all the awards and let them make their speeches within reason, people will be more than happy to stick around for all the cool annoucements (though I wish there were less cringey celebrity monologues… my lord was that painful)

Like the entire games industry dressed up for this day and despite not many awards being given out they tell it very seriously. The worst part about the TGA blitzing through the actual awards was that this is during a year that's arguably been one the worst for recognising the people who actually pour their hearts and souls into making games. There have been layoffs all over the place, and having the show treat the same people as an afterthought when the TGAs literally wouldn't exist without those people making games, comes across as disrespectful and extremely poor optics. I hope Geoff takes it to heart and does better, or people don't tune into the next one to show that these things do matter.

I think the content creators and professional players got short changed by the awards show too... they were preshow, poorly scripted, and then cut from the rebroadcast/edits completely. Like they were celebrated a few years ago as the draw card celebrities... now they are replaced with hollywood actors and brand deals. Here is the voice actor award winner... now kick him off stage and get a real actor who is poorly acting in the next trailer Like we talking layoffs in gaming, the esports leagues are being gutted too, streamers are getting gouged by Twitch and KZfaq, thats not mentioned either. The game industry influencers (the content creators) are still the biggest sway point in advertising their games to the market more than ever... and they were ignored to advertise more games?
