@17 he says he's never had anyone say they want to keep their paneling. Yeah. He needs to meet my son who is 13 and on the autism scale. I bought a house that was built in 1920 and " updated" in about 1982... He loves the paneling in his room. and begged me not to paint/ remove it. He says it "warm like a tree" and it makes him happy. So yay for paneling.

I had old 1970s faux wood paneling in my mom's house. Just gave it 2 coats of glidden gripper followed by a nice ivory paint color, looks gorgeous. Didn't need any spackle or anything else
@str8kronic6 жыл бұрын
Bette Davis whats glidden gripper? Im going to google now but can u still see the lines ?
@kerprice6 жыл бұрын
Glidden Gripper is a primer you can get at Home Depot. I put a few pictures on home depots website under the Glidden Grippper gallon review. The title of my review is "Great to Freshen Up Old Paneled Walls" and I incuded some pics. It doens't get rid of the lines, but it makes it look like expensive wainscoating.

People don't like wood paneling BECAUSE it's dark and makes the room look darker and smaller. This guy decides to choose a ridiculous dark blue that would just make her basement feel like a cave instead of open and airy that white would accomplish. Poor choice, poor presentation. So sad....I hope she chose to ignore his advice.

I love wood paneling, it's warm and earthly. Its not as cold and sterile as today's white and grey trend. Personally I think people might regret all these renovations when they realize everything is so badly made. All this new furniture is manufactured abroad and made with either plywood or MDF that is full of chemical adhesives. You"ll have to maintain it or even change it constantly. I hope SOME people decide to keep the home as it was originally built, at least for historical purposes. Happy renovating.

Just paint the paneling with 2 coats of paint & primer in one. Painted paneling looks nice because of the texture. If it's in a basement, go lighter for sure.

Cover the groove on the narrow board and use a cream color for paint. That will flow nicely with the stone and offer more of timeless cottage design. Of course I’m not a designer by trade so tread carefully...
@MP-xd1tc5 жыл бұрын
The grooves still show. It would look nicer in a lighter color

Exactly...That's why my husband and I are going to be painting the hideous brown paneling in our family room an eggshell color to help open and brighten it up and then add pops of yummy colors and textures!

I texturized the panels with sheetrock all purpose bond instead. First I smoothed out the lines like he did, then I added more bond with a roller, then knocked it down with a texture knife. The end result looks like sheetrock 👌
@jamiedandrea60995 жыл бұрын
Did he seriously not fill in the lines with the compound on the final project? You can still see the paneling lines..... That didn't seem like the point? Maybe I missed something.

I thought the idea of the putty was to fill in the grooves, to make it look like a clean sheet of sheet rock after its painted but why can i still see the lines?
@twofacepalmer12122 жыл бұрын
The lines are not supposed to be visible. I'm getting ready to do the same thing but will be using joint compound. What ever is used will shrink a little anyways (whether it's joint compound, spackle or caulking) - so I'll let it dry and then go back over it looking for low spots and fill those areas in again. Then sand, then clean and then primer. The primer will hide all the seams. After that paint 😄

@SabrinaB4126 жыл бұрын
I had done this years ago, but never have painted it yet. The problem with this is that if you have paneling walls that cover...say..a bathroom, you have to take that piece out to fix plumbing problems, so you should consider that before you do this technique. I live with paneling throughout my home (yuck), but it is a great way to make it look not like paneling if you are going for the solid white look.

Primer before paint works much better than 2 in 1 primer and paint.
@seabass223 жыл бұрын
You can still see the lines. Should just leave the lines and paint it. It looks worse if you try to hide it. If you want it smooth, rip it out and get drywall. Also, you need an oil based primer first. Then you can use whatever paint.
