An Easy CNC Router Project You Can Make From Scratch (A Complete Step By Step Guide)

2 жыл бұрынThis video shows the beginner how to make an easy CNC router project from scratch using any CNC router design software. It also lets the beginner know they do not need to be an expert to make projects that sell. Yes, even the beginner can make money with CNC router projects.
The CNC project in this video is a house number sign, designed using Vectric Vcarve Desktop. However, all design software can do this project, including Vectric Cut2d, Easel, Carbide Create, and more.
You will also learn about masking CNC router projects for painting multiple colors using Oramaxk 813. You will learn how to apply the masking and how to remove it.
We will cut the project on the Longmill CNC router (by Sienci Labs) using the gSender control software.

Garrett, I am a very much a cnc beginner and I have watched a lot of cnc videos on how to design a project. NOBODY explains it better than you. Everyone else stops videoing when they finish designing their project and I am like, "now what do I do"??? They never show the next step in creating a g-code and how to send it to the cnc router to start cutting like you just did in this video. Thanks Garrett. The one thing I dont know yet is changing out bits in the middle of the job. 1 for carving a name with a 60 degree bit and 1 to cut out the circle for drink coasters. Do you happen to have a video for that procedure???

Excellent tutorial, I am an Engineering Pattern and Model Maker and I do numerous Logo's and Plaques that need to be cast in Aluminum or Brass. Once it was completed, it occurred to me that I had no idea of how to operate it. Needless to say, I learned all my lessons, and this machine has delivered thousands of hours of trouble free, profitable, service in my machine shop :) . I am enjoying your videos. @@chrisprincing5724 I bought the 5’ by 10’ for panel cutting and making a vacuum table set away from the edge. A So, because the table is wider, the dust collection can be superior, as the brush never leaves the main surface. I intend to have the vacuum as 4’ x 8’ for panel cutting and border the main board with MDF keyed into the edge. Also, the front edge can have a vertical surface table for extra uses, or a rotary axis lathe. Also, this size improves the resale value in the future. Gives lots of options. I have some things to sell to make up for the extra cost, like a Yamaha 250 XR with very little mileage and a couple of rifles new in the box.

This is an excellent video as it takes you through the entire process. I noticed one thing that you didn't comment on. When you set the Z axis you had the touch plate on the spoil board not on the project board as you were cutting through the project board.

It’s very important to stick with one or two things to make until u master it then u can explore to to make other stuff . Great video , on your final view of the sign I could see the outside of the cut was not smooth where the bit ramp in. Why did this happen and how would stop this from happening?

Richard, I would recommend doing the ramp in only one direction, when the machine moves in the other direction during the ramp, it changes the loading on the tool.

I like the project and the teaching style. I’m wondering if you can v carve on the outside of the numbers, then how do I hog out the recess up to the numbers without loosing the bevel ? I’m a newbie at this but I thought tapered numbers would add a little to a sign.

Dougie, try to do a vcarve toolpath with a flat depth. That will give you the bevel and a taper to the numbers that you are looking for brother!

I do lots of signs and plaques. Regional theme items seem to draw interest and sales. One of them is an engraved profile of Long Island with numbers, names or towns engraved on it. That number could be a house address, name of a family or business or anything else someone might want. Obviously the personal aspects would change, based on who might want to buy it. Other items that do well is regional theme items like lighthouses and boats. Numbers and nearly anything else can also be customized on those items also. I keep files of various templates. It's easy to resize, edit and customize images. I have a bunch of Florida themed items also. Hopefully we will be able to show and move them this coming winter when Long Island pretty much shuts down. They're easy and fast to make. A good place to start. You can even make some for yourself and put them on the front of your house or mailbox. Of course, engrave or laser your info on them. Never know when they might draw some interest and sales. For beginners, thanks to Garrett, you now have an idea of how simple it can be get started. Watch past videos and follow how to do it. For the business aspects of it, watch those videos also. I am truly loving your tutorials to the point I downloaded parallel so I could follow more closely only to find the vcarve free download can’t be used to do what I have learned, only their files. Is this correct or am I missing something. Thankyou for your time. Ray Smith.

Hello Garrett, well my machine should be completely assembled tomorrow, longmill 30 30, question, when completed with a design, how does one know , what hit to start with, when to change bits and what bit to finish with, when curing a 3D image ? And how to load all my bits that I purchased from you into the vcarve pro software, do you have a video on these subjects ? Thank you.

I'm missing a key piece of the puzzle We've set the 'Z' Zero Position to: Machine Bed Then we've set the Pocked depth to .25 deep Question: Wouldn't the machine reference from the Zero Position (bed) and cut .25 into the Bed? How does it know to start from the top of the material @ .75 above the Zero Position? OR I'll have another question after your answer...lol Cheers, N

N, we set up the project in Vcarve to know that the Zero position was the bed. If we set it in Vcarve to be the top of the project and then set our machine reference to the bed then it would cut 0.25" into the bed.

When you selected the border and the numbers were you holding Shift down? Can you do the same by marque selecting? If the numbers were not 'text' would the center of the 0 be pathed? If not would you need to combine it with the other numbers?

Ian, you can definitely give it a try by marque selecting I suspect this would work just fine my friend! There's never just one way to do things, I suggest using what is easiest for you! You can still do it if you convert it from a text object and it would still display a valid toolpath!

WHy did you drill the mounting holes by hand? What wood machine better, i get that pine is cheap, but curious what are better woods. I don't own a cnc yet.

I drilled by hand because it works. Pointless to drill on the router...way to much time. This is an absolute beginners project. All woods are better thank pine.

Any input for users of the free trial version, that experience the error message regarding the “software can only save tool paths for data from supplied tutorial files” it’s stating to load an unmodified tutorial file to test machined output.

Hey Ryan, I know it's a little confusing brother! But you won't be able to run your tool paths with the free version of the software. This error message will be fixed when you purchase any of their packages!

Well another great project and very well taught. I have a request for future if possible. I am wanting to change over to gsender from ugs. My question is, is there a way you can show us setups for gsender. In particular I use ugs and the screen set shows me my project start in the front left corner specifically I have my machine set to home in that corner and that's where I always start. Gsender seems a bit scary to me in the fact of the way it is virtually a 3d screen visual. I don't know where to start my projects and if they will actually setup and cut properly. I always use the front left corner for my design datum and cut start. How would I go about this in gsender. It looks very confusing to me the way the screen is laid out. I don't understand the 3d look screen for project startup. Thanks for any input and help maybe a video to come that would be great. I have been watching most of your videos since I started my CNC adventures and find them very educational and find yours to be most informative. Anyways sorry for the long winded post on this video. Question: What would happen if the bit dia was too large and you wouldn't have enough clearance between the rim and one of the numbers? Would the program tell you?

Russel, great question! The program wouldn't tell you and you would just need a smaller endmill to carve out those regions. But you can see this on the simulation prior to cutting.

Garrett if i order files from etsy .Can I run off thumb drive and just change bits or do I have to do the tool path I'm green as hell . I have 6 weeks to figure this out help please .Newbie

The files on Etsy have instructions. They will tell you what to do. Provided your software will read the g code file extension, you will have no problem. As long as you set up according to the instructions. The file extension is .gcode You may have to change the extension to whatever your machine reads, for example TXT, NC, etc. But yes, it will run off your thumb drive

Went out to Carbide Create in a separate Monitor to follow with you and it won't do ovals! Circles yes and also octagons etc but no ovals. Do you know of a way to get an oval in Carbide create? Thanks

Hi Sarah. Although I am not a Carbide Motion user, ALL CNC routers use the same g-code so there is no reason it should not. Does that answer your question?

Dan, cut2d doesn't come with clipart files. You will need to upgrade to Vcarve desktop to get the free clipart.

What would it take, i.e. is there a simple way to round over the base of the letters and oval rather than having the sharp angle there?

Yes, You can use a ball nose endmill for the base (this tool → bit.ly/3IP26gX). You will have to offset the letters by .125 and run your flat tool after. Hard to explain.

Why can't I get UGS to open my gcode file unless I put .nc after the name? It will open it if it is in a format like(Welcomesign.nc.gcode)

UGS should recognize a txt format. I am not sure, unless there is a setting in it for what it should recognize.

Garrett, when attenpting to save the toolpaths, i get an error message that says, the visible toolpath ise different tools. I have only selected the 1/4" EM. I have started over multiple times and continue getting the same error.

I saw that too Greg. I think it’s where the 1inch ramp-in came from. It seemed to have the same jog in all 3 passes of the cutout. I wouldn’t guess as to how to correct it.

Sir I seen video you use 0.75 final depth,but you use 0.1 mm step down and 0.1 step over, but spindle motor didn't cut stepdown 0.1 mm material,it's directly cut 0.75 mm depth,so why spindle did not cut step by step, although you fill 0.1 mm step down and 0.1 mm step over

Hi Curtis. I did it the way I did it for beginners at a very basic level. The holes won't be ugly when I have brass pins running through them holding a plate to the house.

No i created the project but when i saved then loaded into Gsender i can’t move my router using the jog wheel for my bob’s cnc machine when i tell my machine to outline the project it moves to the front stops and grinds until i turn it off, I’ve told the Gsender software i have a Bob’s CNC and I’ve calibrated the XY and Z
