I made a massive mistake when out on a landscape photography trip in my camper van. I made some assumptions, did not pay attention to what I was doing and I am quite embarrassed by what happened. 10% off your first Squarespace website or domain: www.squarespace.com/heaton

I love when you share your screw-ups with us! I know how often I have done something like this, or far worse, and felt defeated that I could make a mistake that would cost me the images I was hoping to get. It actually helps to know that someone with your extreme level of talent and expertise is still as human as me and we can all have our stumbles! Love the image, love the adventure, love the humanity you bring to every shared experience! Please keep sharing!

I know you felt the trip was a bust and you seemed very disappointed in yourself. But I think you allowed us a glimpse into a situation all of us have found ourselves in both in photography or our lives in general. The fact that you pushed on and still came out with a very very usable shot shows how your experience took over in the face of stress. I mean the tree frames the sun well, you really pulled up some details in the shadows of the hills, and the outer branches contrast nicely with the sky. Not a fail from where I'm standing. Great job making a win out of it!!!

Easy mistake to make with the guidebook, though both are lovely locations. Plus another reason to go to the Dales over the Lakes at this time of year is that the number of visitors makes it feel like a theme park. As to the morning session, no joy in the morning but you did get to scout it, so at least now you have a flavour of the area. Gavin's going to have a field day with this I expect.

I've been following this channel for sometime, and I realized I've never asked this question: on location, how do you deal with color balance? As you evaluate the changing temperature of the light, vegetation in various shades of green, refracting rain drops light, sky and clouds -- how do you do it? Is it a question of getting it right as you are shooting (somehow!), or fixing it in post. Love your work AND the cinematography which is heaps better than just a short time ago. The camera POV puts us right "in the middle" of your story. Thanks!

Thanks Tom, What a great video. I was going to say that your error of the previous night was a blessing in disguise but you beat me to it. Despite the rush, you ended up with a gem of a photograph, beautifully processed with real empathy for the scene. Up until about two years ago, every time I went out, I was always determined to come back with something and more often than not, set myself up for disappointment. Now I often go out with no particular plan and zero expectations and I always come away fulfilled, even if I haven't taken my camera out of the bag, or have photographed a total dud, or a few total duds. I never come home disappointed and always return grateful for a few hours of walking and engaging with nature. Sometimes, the only plan I have maybe just a location, or some part of a location, but then when I get there, depending on conditions and/or my mood, I don't always stick to the script. It's usually on occasions like this that I happen on something I had not expected and am rewarded, but not always. It happens to me often enough to make me keep going out with the camera, but maybe no more than one in every five outings. It's enough for me. To that end, I want to thank you for highlighting the work of Simon Booth two years ago. His work has inspired me to slow down and not just look for the big vistas and epic fire skies, but to look for and observe smaller things that I might normally have not noticed and walked straight past. It's been nice to see you do more from the Yorkshire Dales. I've not really seen the dales since 1980 and then it was on a bike and not stopping for landscape photography, so I need to get back there sometime on a visit back to England. It seems to me that so many photographers overlook the Dales and are drawn straight to the Lake District. I can understand why, but it seems like there is much to be found, or refound in the Dales. I think Dartmoor, with its granite lichen-covered tors, also offers a good relief from the green of summer.

I was editing my recent photos from Southerscales when I had a break to watch your video! Perfect timing and sorry, very amusing! It's a nature reserve because of the rare plants that grow in the cracks of the limestone pavement. Most of the pavement is chaotic but I was lucky to find a small section on the northern edge that is flat, fairly clear and beautifully patterned. Impressed by the way you planned for the weather and sunset, I still simply turn up and go hunting for compositions - need to try harder!

That's just the way it is, some days you get the bear and some days the bear gets you. I really did like the one image that you created, though. It was worth the trip. But one of the most hilarious parts of this video what seeing you hang up on Gavin.... again. 🤣 I knew who it was going to be when I heard the ringtone. I think he is here in the U.S. now photographing waterfalls in upper New York state. When you pulled into your "parkup" and I saw that camper I thought about Gavin and Amanda. But they have a nicer camper than that. Anyway, it was a nice roadtrip. Hope you weren't too disappointed.

Since I am new to photography I have not gone thru your experience just yet but, as an avid mountain biker though, I suffered many times of the same mistake which in those cases cost me hours of climbing the wrong trail. However perseverance and tools, in my case a GPS and the use of tools like Hiking/MTB project, GAIA and others, on my phone and GPS have allowed me to get lost less often. Every experience is successful, even the ones we think went wrong or not according to plan, you've got a great picture which had you followed the initial plan wouldn't have, so I would personally call it a win, great story.

Oh Tom…….I just knew you weren’t at Souther Scales, which is one of my favourite locations in this part of the Dales! You would have been spoilt for choice there, with areas of very eroded pavements and one particular area where the clints are absolutely massive and like actual pavements. Lots of lovely trees as well. Just check that wonderful guidebook more carefully next time and you’ll be spoilt for choice. Still enjoyed the video, however. Kathleen
