After having such a fun couple of hours softbaiting in the mussel farm Stevo and I headed back for a serious bait n berley bash, I wanted to see how good it can really get and if the bait fishing would be just as good if not better. We still had a bit of a northerly swell hanging around with wind accompanying it, so just like last time we were hoping we could nudge just out of that weather.
Launching and just coming around the head the swell and wind made it a bit of a bumpy ride for us along the coast but the little fc430 battelled through it with ease. We made our way to a spot we caught a few nice fish on the softies the other day in hope it wasn't just luck that we were there when the fish were. We anchored up and set the berley to have a steady flow, every time we have come here it just feels so fishy.
Dropping the berley and cranking as it dropped the water filled up with little chunks and with Stevo already having a bait in it took seconds for his rod to load up. I could see fish shadows around the berley and new straight away with Stevos rod tip nodding they must of been Trev's - a few seconds later Stevo had a Trev circling on the surface. There was just a mass school of Trev's around the boat and over the first 10-15mins that's all we caught, we couldn't get our baits through them.
Casting further back I managed to hook up to our first snap which was followed all the way by Trev's once closer to the boat, Stevo also managed to land a snap straight under the boat. We had caught a good size Trev and carved half of it up into little bait sized chunks with the other half set on ice for a bit of lunch. Being a harder bait it stayed on the hook longer for us. With the berley really kicking in snapper started coming in thick and fast with most being around that 40-45cm which isn't a bad fish at all. The Trev's were with us the whole time we were there and soon those better snaps started to arrive, it's always good fun to have a few double fig fish turning up.
Stevo decided to flick out a softie, sometimes it can get you those better, bigger fish and sure enough Stevo was hooked up to a better fish. It was another nice solid red which was released to fight another day, the fishing was hot and it was great to be able to release a lot of these bigger fish. It was another fun day fishing the mussel farm with plenty of fish coming aboard. It was awesome seeing the schools of trev's and a few kings swimming around in the berley but most of all it was greeting a line wet with Stevo.
