What does your evening wind-down look like? Maybe a hot bath before bed, tucking into a book or a HERD KZfaq video with a cuppa tea? Wine at the dinner table with chatter about the day or a walk through the neighbourhood?
Ours involves putting the elephants to bed so to speak, or at least making sure they are home and safe. Like in many family homes, where the adults stay up a little later, and the youngest turn in early, so it is with our herd. Phabeni sleeps much more than the bigger elephants and curls into his hay bed soon after arriving back at the orphanage. The bigger elephants continue munching, drinking, and relaxing out in the garden into the night, sleeping here and there at intervals.
Once the sun has set and our night shift carer reports for duty, Phabeni toddles about the nursery with Lammie and Spotty before finding the perfect position for a snooze. He wakes for milk through the night, like a human baby, ensuring he gets all the fuel and nutrients he needs to keep growing.
