Famed journalist and author Bob Woodward and former Nixon White House aide Alexander Butterfield appeared together at the LBJ Presidential Library on Wednesday, March 2, 2016. They discussed Woodward's recent book, "The Last of the President's Men," which details the incredible story of Alexander Butterfield, who served as deputy to White House Chief of Staff H. R. Haldeman and who revealed the secret White House taping system that led to President Nixon’s resignation.
LBJ Library Director Mark Updegrove moderated the conversation. The event was co-hosted with the Harry Ransom Center, who holds the Watergate papers of Woodward and Carl Bernstein.

According to a KZfaq video and several written news reports, Nixon was abusing both prescription drugs (in one case without a prescription) and alcohol. A significant but often overlooked set of facts.

I don't feel any envy at all for Butterfield's job as Nixon's deputy assistant. Imagine working for a strange and lonesome president from the minute he steps into the Oval Office early in the morning until late at night after he's back in the Residence. That's a 7-day 12-15 hour work shift.

Good Lord Bob, let the man finish a damn story! So frustrating seeing Bob constantly interrupting.

Butterfield would go off on tangents off of tangents. Once even asked what his train of thought was.

What drove Nixon? Woodward: Lust for power But he used that power mostly to settle old scores = REVENGE *I wrote this BEFORE Woodward said the very same thing.

Woodward, the outsider, just can't stop talking. I would have liked to hear from the insider.

A major venue like the LBJ Library should have audio staff with the elementary ability to make recordings without massive echoes.

For years those of Nixon's staff still alive, Cheney, Rumsfeld and the rest, got together every year for dinner and Colonel Butterfield says he was never invited.

Classic! Class Act from both Woodward and Alexander Butterfield! This performance was done by Woodward before he even considered the possibility of President Trump being elected! Woodward telling the story about Nixon's farewell to the staff saying that hate will destroy the person hating and Woodward saying that people need to stop hating and move on! Is Woodward still bitter as so many others and unable to accept the election of 2016?

You Trump fans seem almost universally bitter about Obama having been elected and Trump himself is still attacking Clinton over emails and before you get all petty and partisan, no I’m not a Democrat. I just find blatant hypocrites nauseating

Woodward has seemed to be the most impartial of all of the authors who have written on Trump. He doesn’t go out of his way to bash Trump. Trump’s words and actions illustrate the man better than anything else. HE is the loser and his election will go down in history as the greatest con pulled on the largest amount of suckers at the same time. About 37 million of them. I still can’t get over how the intelligence level in this country has dropped over the past 50 years. The imbecilic dullards and cretins keep multiplying while the intelligent have only 1 or 2 kids. The stupefication of America was inevitable.

I wonder if his old friend Bob Halderman had turned on him too?
@sorenstauss8097
@sorenstauss8097 7 жыл бұрын
JAKESTAR105 No, Haldeman took a water under the bridge approach, and stayed friendly with Nixon, even attending Pat's funeral before his own death from cancer a short time later. John Ehrlichman, however, never forgave Nixon for not granting a pardon. He was a bitter man until the day he died.

Thanks Robert. I kind of forgot about the question. I think I was curious about the relationship between John Ehrlichman & Bob Halderman post watergate.
@sorenstauss8097
@sorenstauss8097 7 жыл бұрын
Ah yes. Well, the short answer is that there really wasn't a relationship. Ehrlichman really resolved to leave the days of the Nixon administration behind him. John Ehrlichman never really had anything to do with that team, including Haldeman, again. Interestingly, Haldeman and Dean ran into each other in Los Angeles and exchanged pleasantries, and intended to meet at a later date to sort of catch up and talk about those days and clear the air. Haldeman died a short time later. I would love to have been a fly on the wall for such a meeting.

Maybe he, Richard Nixon, needed time to himself. These interpretations (on the part of the speakers) are very one-sided. I’m not defending Nixon. I defend human nature. I guess I also defend psychology in a way, the complexities of human psyche.

Some extremely critical things can be said about Richard Nixon, but Richard Nixon wasn’t arrogant. But Alexander Butterfield is an extremely arrogant guy! Arrogance is definitely not a sign of intelligence!

I remember watching an interview where Nixon says that if the president does it, it’s not illegal. He was the president, and he really believed that because of that, he was above the law. That is arrogance.

Think of all the interesting and fine people he could have availed himself, if he would have. He was so isolated: he could only hear his own voice. No wonder he was so paranoid.
