An evening of conversation with actress Glenda Jackson, moderated by Annette Insdorf.
Currently starring in King Lear at the Golden Theatre, Glenda Jackson is not only a legendary performer but a politician who spent 23 years as a member of Parliament. Her triumphant return to Broadway in Edward Albee’s Three Tall Women last year-after a 30-year absence-earned her the Tony Award, among other prizes. For her performance as King Lear in 2016 at the Old Vic in London, she won the Evening Standard Award for Best Actress, and a Critics Circle Award for Best Shakespearean Performance.
Glenda Jackson began her stage career as a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, making her Broadway debut in Marat/Sade (1965). She began her political career in 1992, running for Parliament, and serving till 2015.
Recorded on April 29, 2019 at the 92nd Street Y.

What she says about Shakespeare is exactly what my English literature said to me and my colleagues: Shakespeare is a man for all seasons, centuries and years because we as humans, do not change.

Glenda is right. Thatcher said: "There's no such thing as society" in 'Women's Own' magazine, 31 October 1987. Glenda Jackson: great actress, whose fundamental integrity made every part real. And when Glenda left Parliament for the last time, reality left with her.

Glenda Jackson has danced on, and commanded, two public stages in her life - acting and politics. Those two mistresses rely on artifice and truth. I know little of her private life, but artifice and truth appear central to her public and her private life also. Quite an achievement. She appears to be a woman utterly without vanity, ego, or design. A great actress. A good politician. I have always wanted to know her better. It would be wonderful to read her biography - if ever she would write it herself, which I doubt, or by someone with an inside track to her quality. It would be a bloody good read.

So interesting, such an amazing actress, a dedicated politician, a principled person. I hope some writer writes her story. She went/died as said in "Fried Green Tomatoes" " A Lady Always Knows when it is Time To Leave." With Dignity. Glenda you left an amazing legacy in the body of work You will be missed. R.I.P.
